DEAR FRIENDS,

Peace and all Good!

It’s been just over a month now that I have been here at San Luis Rey! Yeah!!! I can tell you that it has been a real delight. Fr. David told me that this is a busy place and he was not kidding! But, I am really enjoying mee ng so many wonderful people and taking part in lots of amazing parish ac vi es! I look forward to many years of ministry with you. As I write this first le er to you, I would like to remind you of several upcoming events in the parish. On Tues-day evening of this week at 7:00 p.m., we will have the Cross Cultural Council Discernment Mee ng. As you have been hearing, this is a new council in the parish to seri-ously work at bringing together the gi s of the various cultures, which make up our parish community. This Council will work closely with the pastor and the Pastoral Council to advance more coopera on and fellowship of the diversity in our parish. If you would like to be consid-ered for the council, please come to this mee ng on this Tuesday evening. You may also recommend someone to the council as well. You will hear more about the work of the council and then the Pastoral Council and the pastor will select the membership. Please pray for the success of this new council. Thank you. Wednesday evening, March 16th will be our last Taize Prayer Service for Lent. It will not be held in Holy Week. I am so happy to see so many people coming each week to be spiritually nourished by this contempla ve style prayer. Then, on Thursday we will celebrate the Feast of St. Patrick with a special Mass in the Old Mission Church at 4:30 p.m. and potluck to follow at the Mission. Please bring some food to share with others. St. Patrick, pray for us! Next Sunday the Church begins Holy Week and the Sacred Three Days of the Lord’s Paschal Mystery—the Passion, Death and Resurrec on of Christ. Please consult the bulle n for the various mes and places for the Holy Week Liturgies. This year on Good Friday, Bishop McElroy has given permission for another Good Friday liturgy of the Lord’s Passion. And so, along with the other devo-

onal prayer services, we will celebrate two Solemn Lit-urgies on Good Friday: One at 3:00 p.m. in the Old Mis-sion and the Mul cultural Liturgy at 7:00 p.m. in the Ser-ra Center. Both Liturgies will end with Holy Communion. If you wish to come to the a ernoon liturgy please note that the church is small and will fill up quickly. In closing, I wish to thank the Stewardship Commi ee for such a lovely recep on for the new parishioners last weekend. I could tell that it was a labor of love.

Love,

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

Strong words come from Saint Paul in today’s second reading. He reveals in no uncertain terms that life in Christ is our goal. Everything else, he maintains, is “rubbish.” Junk. Trash. Garbage. Is that true? Is every-thing else “rubbish” compared to deepening our rela on-ship with the Lord? What about pu ng recrea onal ac-

vi es ahead of a ending Mass? Or preferring uninter-rupted hours playing the latest video games or watching TV to spending me in a bible study group, choir prac ce or serving in a soup kitchen? Or keeping late hours at work over sharing the gospel with friends and neighbors? To what extent do we exercise stewardship over our re-la onship with Christ?

QUERIDOS AMIGOS, ¡Paz y Bien!

IMPROVE YOUR SPIRITUAL LIFE DURING THE LENTEN SEASON

During the season of Lent, Catholics tradi onally devote special efforts to deepen their rela onship with the Lord in three areas: Prayer, Fas ng, and Almsgiving. Throughout Lent, as we remember the great sacri-fice Christ made, Chris an stewards examine their own sacrificial giving. We do this to emulate Christ, to gain spiritual maturity, and share with others. Our Lenten efforts are not like short-term New Year’s resolu ons, designed as a forty-day weight-loss plan or a self-help project. Instead, they embody the idea of sacrifice in the pursuit of holiness. Here are a few ideas to inspire your own thoughts and to make Lenten sacrifices that might truly be life changing. (Hint: a Lenten journal may help in no c-ing and recording your growth.) PRAYER • Par cipate in an extra community prayer ac vity

weekly: perhaps a daily Mass, the Sta ons of the Cross, or a Taize prayer session.

• Dedicate yourself to an extra 10-15 minutes of daily Scripture reading.

FASTING • Fast from nega ve thoughts of others. Be con-

scious of mean or pe y mental messages. • Perhaps fas ng from all screen me would

prove imprac cal. But set yourself a limit. Sacri-fice some aspect of Internet browsing, television watching, or tex ng, and do something con-struc ve with the me saved.

• Refraining from food or drink is o en a fas ng choice. Make sure you’re doing it for the right sacrificial reasons and perhaps donate the mon-ey saved to a charity.

ALMSGIVING • A wise man was asked, “How much should I

give?” His reply: “More.” Stretch your charitable giving this Lent. Sacrifice a need or want to give more money to the offertory collec on at Mass.

• Set aside a few hours of Lent to be with the poor, to accompany them on their journey. Serve at a food kitchen or help out at a food bank. Promise yourself you will enter your “discomfort” level some me this Lent.
