gMaya gasped and wheezed as she struggled to twist her body through the narrow opening of the vent. For one stomach churning moment, she thought she was going to be wedged there forever. She had carefully planned every part of this escape but that did not mean it was all going to go smoothly.

Just outside the force shield, hidden safely from the heat scanners, Kona floated on her hoverbike. She glanced at the timer in her helmet. The display informed her that Maya had just over one minute left.

“She’s trapped... she’s been recaptured... she got her timings wrong for the laser gates...” As the timer ticked steadily on, thoughts buzzed through Kona’s brain like lights flickering in a dark hallway. So many things could have gone wrong. 5... 4... 3...

Suddenly, from within the confines of the force shield, the main gate exploded. Lit by the ferocious fireball, a triumphant Maya appeared like a phoenix emerging from the flames. She was looking particularly pleased with herself this time.

1. True or false? Paragraph one focuses on a character.2. Has paragraph four started because of a change of time, location or character?3. Find and copy the phrase in paragraph two which shows you the focus has changed to a new location.4. The author adds the sentence below to the end of the story:Her mission was complete and she was thrilled to be heading to the rendezvous point with Kona.Where should the sentence go? A. start a new paragraph B. join the final paragraph

The surface of the water was a rolling expanse of froth, concealing the world that lay underneath. Miniscule fish, dressed more exquisitely than royalty, dived and darted between towers of bright coral. Sunlight cut through the water like a knife and glinted off fish scales and the occasional metallic object that lay half-buried on the sea bed.

Frankie was at home here. Beneath the surface, deep in the heart of the reef, his busy mind could rest. It was easy to forget about the bills that needed paying and the failed friendships that he had left behind when he was surrounded by such overwhelming beauty. Down here, he could simply forget about the world above.

Frankie had completed almost two hundred dives, guiding customers to choice spots around the island and allowing them to take in the sights. Despite all of those dives, he had yet to glimpse a manta ray. As a child, he had read obsessively about these immense, oddly shaped giants of the oceans, yet he had never been fortunate enough to see one swimming in its natural habitat.

5. Add a sentence opener to the first sentence of paragraph three so that it marks a change in time.6. The author adds the following sentence to the end of paragraph one: Sand was disturbed by crabs, in search of their lunch, scuttling sideways across the sea floor. They do not start a new paragraph. Is their choice correct? Why?7. Add one sentence to the end of the final paragraph, making sure the focus stays the same. Write the first sentence of the next paragraph to show a change in location.

ANSWERSA paragraph is a section of a piece of writing, usually focusing on a single theme that is made up of more than one complete sentence. A piece of fiction is something that is untrue, as opposed to something that is factual (something that is true).Question 1 - The statement is true: the paragraph is focused on the character of Maya.Question 2 - The paragraph starts with a change of location – ‘from within the confines of the force shield’. Even though the first word of the sentence is 'Suddenly' which is linked to time, it is in addition to the change of location, rather than solely focusing on a change in time by itself.Question 3 - A phrase is a small group of words that are grouped together to create part of a full sentence. The phrase needed is ‘Just outside the force shield...’Question 4 – The additional sentence should join the final paragraph; it focusses on the same theme as the paragraph before it (Maya being successful in her task).Question 5 - A sentence opener is when a writer uses a verb,(a word to describe an action), a noun (a person, thing or place) or a preposition (a type of word used to express time, place or cause, for example: after, under, over) to begin their sentence in order to add more detail. A variety of sentence openers can be given, however, sentences must include a reference to time. For example, ‘Recently, Frankie had completed almost two hundred dives...’.Question 6 - The author is correct, as the focus is still on the location described in the first paragraph and the creatures that live in it.Question 7 - When adding a sentence to the end of the final paragraph, it must still be about his childhood dreams e.g. He often wondered if his dream would ever come true. When writing the first sentence of the new paragraph, it must include a change oflocation e.g. While swimming near a reef that he was relatively unfamiliar with, Frankie noticed a cloud of sand rising from the sea floor.

Histo

ryChronology is about putting things in order depending on when they happened. As things chance, historians try to record those changes in the right order. Complete the following tasks to hoe your chronology skills!

1. Place the following events in chronological order from the earliest to the latest by numbering them 1 -8.

BCE- Before Common Era- also known as BC (Before Christ)CE- Common Era- also known as AD (Anno Domini) or ‘The Year of Our Lord’C. – Circa- this means we are not sure of the exact date, but it was around then.

2. Write out the dates of the events above in chronological order. Also, write which century they happened in.

A century is any 100 year period, howeverthe accepted calendar century of today was instituted in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. A century is defined as a 100 year period. Currently, we are in the 21st century, meaning we are in the years beginning with 2000. It is a bit confusing in terms of understanding the relationship between years and century. Reflecting on it, thought, it makes sense. The years we are in is always one behind the century number. This is because it takes 100 years to mark a century. For example, the 19th century is considered the 1800s, because it is one behind the century number. The 16th century covers the 1500s. This same logic is why we are in the 21st century.

3. In history, we are not only concerned with the chronology of big events. Everyone has their one chronology, including you! Create a chronological timeline of some major events in your own life so far to show the changes you’ve been though. Draw eight boxes in your book. See if you can add accurate dates (you may have to use C. if you’re not sure. The final box is for you to predict your future!
