Bryn Thomas My project is a mother and calf migrating from one resting place to another. It is made from scrap metal wood, pinecones and paint. I welded pieces of scrap metal into the shape of an elephant with help from my father, and repeated the same with the smaller elephant. I used a chain for the tail and placed it over the trunk of the smaller elephant. Both were bolted onto the wood and lastly I included some pinecones I found at a local park. They were painted and finished with spray lacquer before being screwed onto the base.
William Eather, Charlie Edwards, Thomas Hawke, Lachlan Cook Our work is Phantom Backpack from the Ghostbusters movie. We added the objects in the work randomly. We used old computer parts, and attached them with really sticky glue which has been a difficult process.
WASTE TO ART
Waste to Art is an annual competition and exhibition showcasing the creative re-use of discarded materials through art and
craft. Engaging with the community, Waste to Art attracts school children, artists and community members and encourages
them to challenge perceptions about 'rubbish' and its impact upon the environment. The result is a highly imaginative and
thought provoking collection of artworks celebrating recycling and living sustainably.
These are the works from Year 7 and 8 Enrichment Class who completed works for the Waste to Art Competition. The works
were entered through the Western Plains Cultural Centre and will be exhibited in the Regional Gallery with other works from
schools in the Dubbo Regional Council. Their works will be on display from the 1st April until the 28
th May with the official
opening on the 8th April.
Benjamin Mylan I have created a paper mache’ face from recycled newspaper that I cast into a mould. To remove the dried work from the armature I used tinfoil so it wouldn’t stick. I placed my face on a background of objects I found in the art room.

Alana Jones Porter / Julia Bancroft Our junk art project is a monster thing. It is made out of a computer screen, speakers and keyboard buttons. It has a pink nose, blue eyes and white teeth.
Benjamin Smart / Harry Pike Our project is based on a tsunami. The main materials used in the work are styrofoam, timber, paint and pieces of scrap. We cut the styrofoam with a hot wire and used glue to hold the materials together.
Faith Beavis / Gina Gallop / Isabella Leggett Our sculpture is a black mannequin with junk attached to it. We put a lot of time into planning it and solving problems with its construction. We worked well as a group on this project and enjoyed the practical work.
Alicia Thompson I made a panda with bottle caps and string. The background is a packing board that I found. I also added flowers made from a plastic bottle and animals I found on a milk carton.

A very busy and productive Term 1 has come to a conclusion. I am very pleased with the application of most students and the progress we have made as a community during the past 10 weeks. Year 12 are currently sitting their Half-Yearly Examinations and I draw your attention to the fact that the rest of the school body will be sitting theirs in the early part of next term. We encourage all students to prepare for these important assessments. One of the highlights of this term has been the success of the cattle show team at Royal Canberra Show. Our association with Six Star Speckle Park Stud and JAD Agriculture has been a great bonus for the school and we are grateful for their contribution to our program. The team is currently attending the Sydney Royal Easter Show and are hopeful of solid results over the next week. Our SRC has been inducted and are already working hard to support the student body with any concerns they may have. Year 7 and 9 students will be sitting their NAPLAN tests on the 9th, 10th,11th of May. Please ensure that students attend on these days as it is an important source of data to aid in determining our school’s future direction. Year 9 students should all have received information about the changed rules regarding standards for the completion of the HSC. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact the school for clarification. We have had painters working in the school over the past 2 weeks. They have certainly made a difference with 3 classrooms, stairwells and the corridors in the Maths/Art block looking very smart. I have impressed upon the students how important it is to look after our school and I know they will assist in looking after this new work. The school will be participating in the annual ANZAC Day March on Tuesday 25th of April. I am very proud of the increasing numbers of students who represent us in this ceremony and I hope we see a large roll up again this year. We will be assembling at 10:25 at a.m. at Market Square ready to commence the march at 10:45 a.m. Have a safe and pleasant Easter and remember that the students will return for Term 2 the following day, Wednesday 26th of April. Support Unit Kids- Down on the farm
During Term 1 the Stage 4 Support Unit students have been participating in Agriculture classes with Mr Dimmick. They have been learning and participating eagerly and helped get the cattle ready for the Canberra Show by washing and grooming the Speckle Parks, until they shone in the sun.

Trevor and Custard…or is it Mustard? Farming can be dirty work and it pays to wear your boots over at the Ag plot in case you happen to step in a cow patty! Nevertheless, the students are getting plenty of hands on experience as they get the cattle used to the human touch by giving them a calming pat on the back, as Harry (the cow whisperer) is demonstrating here.
The students are also having fun with the recent chicken arrivals by weighing them and ensuring their feed and water is readily available. Here, Cooper is trying his best to hypnotise a chick using an old farmers’ technique... failing that, friendly persuasion is always an alternative to keep those chickens in line!

On Tuesday the 28th
of March, Year 12 Hospitality completed their ‘Prepare Simple Dishes’ Assessment Task. This
involved cooking and preparing two main meals and two desserts. Tamara Sheslow, Luke Simmons and Corey Wilkinson
worked incredibly hard all day to produce enough meals to serve twenty teachers and staff. They completed the task as
a team, all working to produce Thai Beef Salad and Lamb Kofta with Greek Salad for main and for desserts they
produced Chocolate Mousse and Eton Mess. An incredible achievement for only three students. The students received
many positive reviews from the teachers and staff, and overall an excellent reward for a very hard day’s work.

YEAR 9 FOOD TECHNOLOGY
Year 9 Food Technology students had the pleasure of listening to Herb Smith from Dreamtime Tuka on Friday
the 31st of March. Herb talked about how he started his business, and what it takes to create a successful
business in today’s market. The students were able to ask him many questions, which he was very willing to
answer. He also brought some samples in for the students to taste. It was a great opportunity for the students
to see and meet a local who has been so successful with many of his slices making it onto the Qantas morning
tea and afternoon flights. Hopefully he has inspired these students to believe that anything is possible, you just
need to aim high.
BOOK RETURN
The English Faculty would like to ask all students to have a look at home for any novels that they or their brothers or sisters have
not returned to school from previous years. We are missing some novels from class sets. If you do find any at home, simply
return them to the English Faculty staff room.

White Card Training The White card course ran at the end of Week 9 for students who wanted to be able to gain access to a
construction site for either work placement in a VET course in Year 11 or work experience in Year 10. Students were put through a series of activities and presentations relating to Workplace Health and Safety to gain the
qualification which is necessary for safe passage in a construction setting.
The course consisted of three modules over a 6 hour period where students had to link the legislative
requirements of workplace health and safety to being on a construction site where hazard identification and risk control were a main priority. Students learnt how to assess hazards and apply a risk assessment to better
manage and control them in a variety of settings.
The use of signage and mandatory reporting of incidents were covered along with fire safety and what types of
extinguishers were applicable to each fire class. Students also gained knowledge of what permits and licencing are required for certain tasks such as using a forklift or scaffolding over a certain height.
Overall the course ran smoothly with students working in teams to correctly identify and assess a variety of
procedures and processes required for hazard and risk assessment. Students who gained a competent assessment mark, will receive their white card in the mail in the coming weeks.
Well done to everyone who participated.

Open Boys Soccer On 17th March Wellington Boys Soccer team travelled to Dubbo to play Dubbo College in the CHS Knockout. With kick off at 11:30am the heat was searing as the sun was out in full force. The boys put in a great team effort and
took the game to Dubbo with a team consisting of mainly 17/16/15 year olds taking on Dubbo Senior College. It took Dubbo a while to find their rhythm with Jake Veech, Will Edwards, Claude Lewsam and Matt Dutfield
defending well, helped by Caleb Petrovic and Harry Broome filling in the gaps.
Some horrific refereeing brought about a penalty early in the game for a questionable handball. This gave Dubbo a 1 nil lead as they converted the spot kick.
The team started playing some combinations from the back through to the midfield with Ryan Miller, Aidan Carr and CJ Wheatley working well. The physical nature of the game was being seen as the big boys from Dubbo tried
to muscle their way on to the ball against young Will Eather in year 8. They put in some solid challenges with no
help coming from the ref in the middle of the park. Another highly dubious refereeing decision awarded Dubbo another penalty for an apparent handball off a
Wellington shoulder. Sam Birbiles in goal put the pressure on and forced a bad shot with Dubbo missing the goal completely. This gave Wellington some confidence with Tristtan Thompson and Jeremiah Wilson working hard up
front with the help of Noah Cox and Kieran Baker. Sam Birbiles put in a Man of the Match performance making some incredible saves that could have won play of the day for a whole month. Some good sweeping clearances
and goal line scrambles frustrated Dubbo in attack.
The final score remained 1 nil from the penalty spot which is full credit to the Wellington Team. The boys showed real sportsmanship and gave their all in the sweltering conditions. In the next few years our team will only get
better so looking forward to a tilt at the later rounds for next year. Mr Beattie
