How can an Urban Area deal with it’s waste?
The amount of household waste collected in St Albans averages 600 to 700 tonnes per
week, at Christmas and New Year this rises to 900 tonnes. This is a very large amount for the
council to deal with so they are now encouraging residents to categorise their waste
and to encourage recycling. This is to try and meet targets set by the government about how
much rubbish can be dumped in landfill and how much waste should be recycled.
From September 2008, the district council
changed from a refuse sack collection to a twin
bin service. The twin bin service consists of
one wheelie bin for landfill waste, one
wheelie bin for green waste and recycling
boxes.
Week 1 Week 2Green waste is collected in the wheelie bin plus plastic and glass is collected in one recycling box and newspaper and magazines are collected in
another.
Landfill waste including plastic packaging and other non
recyclable waste is collected in the second wheelie bin.
