FASHION REVIEW CHANGES 4-H & Open Fashion Revue judging will be held on Tuesday July 21st at 3:00 p.m. at the Washington County Event Center with only immediate family members as audience.

We’ll include only 4-H members with wearable garments - in Clothing Construction, Artistic Cloth-ing, Sewing with Leather, Knitting and Cro-chet. There will not be any Open Class, En-core Fashions or Cloverbuds modeling this year.

Come to practice July 20 at 2:00 p.m.

There will be NO public show and NO Talent Show this year.

Fashion Revue entry forms will be mailed to all eligible 4-H members. The entry form and nar-ration form must be sent/delivered by July 15 at the Washington County Extension Office.

PROJECTS MUST BE LABELED All General and Home Ec project exhibits

MUST be labeled with name, age, county,

project and unit of the 4-H member. Infor-

mation MUST be written or typed on a label

and securely attached to your exhibit.

Labels for Clothing & Heritage Arts are avail-able from the Extension Office and must be attached at the garments or items. This will assist in identifying exhibit items and getting them displayed accurately.

to discuss your project with a judge. If you

have questions about interview judging, con-

You may ask for an Excused Absence for Interview Judging and we can make ar-rangements to exhibit and judge your project(s) virtually.

E-Records – be sure to use the 2019-20 version

of the e-Record. Note: There are specific

recordbooks for certain projects — including

the supplement pages. Read the project re-

quirements and score sheets; and include all

necessary information or supplements. To see

criteria the judges will use, go to the 4-H Web-

site http://www.colorado4h.org Click on Pro-

jects & Record books.

Notebooks or Record Binders: use any sturdy

binder with three fasteners or three rings to

secure your records. Please put your name,

age, project, and unit on the front cover. You

many add a photo, if you like, too.

Members must be interviewed with

their projects for their projects to be

eligible for project champions.

If a member cannot be interviewed due to an

unavoidable scheduling conflict, a written in-

terview questionnaire (Absentee Interview

Form) must be completed by the member

and turned in with the eRecord and project

on or before judging day. This written inter-

view will allow the project to be considered

for unit placing and participation at State Fair.

Please notify the Extension Office and request

the Absentee form soon.

usually available in the Extension Office for

$3.50 each. However, we are out of stock.

LIVESTOCK RECORD BOOKS Due Tuesday, July 21

4-H members MUST turn in completed livestock,

pet, catch it and horse record books to the Ex-

tension Office by 4:30 p.m. July 23! The record

book is required to complete your project.

Books should be bound in a recordbook cover

(available at the office for $3) or a small 3-ring

binder with this year’s book in the front and up

to 3 past year’s books behind. Before turning it

in, be sure you and your club leader have

signed the completed book.

Since books are due before fair, please just esti-

mate market and jr. livestock sale prices for

your projects. Some current market prices are: Market Lambs: $1.30/lb. Market Goats: $2.85/lb. Market Beef: $.95/lb. Market Hogs: $.40/lb. Poultry: $8/chicken, $15 geese/turkey

All books should be closed out Sept 30th or the

last day of fair, (whichever is the last day you

have your animals). For your inventory pages,

the beginning inventory should be dated Oct

1, 2019 and ending on Sept 30th 2020.

Remember that all age groups should be using

the state e-record. E-records can be down-

loaded from the state 4-H website

www.colorado4h.org. Click the 4-H Programs

and Projects tab and then choose e-records

and select your age group. You can down-

load and print the book to complete by hand –

OR- download and complete by computer in

excel or pdf. For breeding projects, be sure to

check that you have all required supplement

pages listed under supplemental resources.

The books will be judged after fair and returned

at our achievement program in October.

Catch-It books are also due

prior to fair! All catch-it books need to be

turned in by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21.

LIVESTOCK EXHIBITOR MEETING All 4-H and FFA members showing livestock

should attend the exhibitor meeting being held

during fair. The meeting will be offered in the

sheep showring area on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

This short meeting will give information about

expectations and deadlines of fair week. Par-

ents are also encouraged to attend.

PACKER CERTIFICATION FORMS Due Tuesday, July 28

A packer certification form (also known as

COOL form) is required for all market livestock

exhibiting at the fair including swine, sheep,

goats, beef and poultry and are required of all

exhibitors (4-H and FFA). You will be receiving

your forms in the mail in July.

With less than 30 days left to fair, please be

sure to watch withdrawal dates of any medi-

cations or supplements used. You will need to

list those on the form if anything is given be-

tween now and fair.

STALLING ANIMALS AT FAIR In order to space families for appropriate social

distancing guidelines, we will need to know a

count of the number of animals you will be

bringing to the fair; not just how many stalls you

are requesting. Please let your leaders know

that information so that they can turn in stall

reservations by July 21. Please note that fami-

lies will need to space their tack and common

areas 6 feet apart in all barns.

Club leaders and FFA advisors: Please collect

and turn in stall reservations for all livestock de-

partments by July 21. It is extremely important

that we get the number of animals coming to

fair, not just the number of stalls being re-

served. This is to help aid in how we space

families for social distancing. Reservations

should include the number of head being

brought to fair, the number of stalls requested

for each species, and if a tack stall is needed

in each barn. Reservations may be dropped

off or emailed to jamie.axtell@colostate.edu.

ROUND ROBIN Round Robin is a livestock showmanship com-

petition designed to challenge the winners of

the intermediate and senior divisions of beef,

sheep, goat, swine and horse. If you place 1st

or 2nd in your showmanship class, you are eligi-

ble to compete. Eligible contestants must let

the Extension Office know if you intend to par-

ticipate in round robin—if the winners do not

wish to compete, the alternate will be the next

highest placing youth. If you win showmanship

in two different species, you must let the office

know which species you’ll be entering. The

deadline for entering is Thursday by 4:00 p.m.

Round Robin is Friday at 8:00 a.m.

OPEN CLASS OPPORTUNITIES All youth enrolled in 4-H and FFA are also eligi-

ble to enter in the fair as an Open Class Exhibi-

tor. This may be in Agriculture; Home Ec. And

Horticulture Department (includes art, crafts,

baking, garden, etc.). This is a great place to

exhibit any gardening, sewing, artwork or other

hobby work that you have made or grown this

year. Items must be entered on Tuesday, July

28th from 2-6 p.m.

GRANDSTAND CLEANING Each year, clubs are given the opportunity to

make a little money by helping to clean the

grandstands at the fair. This year, the schedule

is as follows:

We encourage ALL clubs to work together and

keep the fairgrounds clean. Please help by

keeping stalls and exhibit areas free of trash

and manure/debris. Be sure to keep aisles, al-

leys and doorways open for visitors to walk

through and enjoy the fair.

DOG NEWS

This summer, regular dog obedi-

ence sessions were held in Arickaree

with Dawn Craig.

Dog health record (updated) and

your dog record book to the Exten-

sion Office on or before July 10th.

The Dog Show will take place on Thursday, July

16 at 1:30 p.m. in the County Event Center.

From Pioneer Ways to Modern Days

This year’s fair parade theme will be

“From Pioneer Ways to Modern Days”.

The parade will take place on

Friday, July 31 at 10:00 a.m.

Entry forms are available at the

Bank of Colorado in Akron.

CLOVERBUD EXHIBITS Cloverbuds, age 5-7, are en-

couraged to exhibit projects

at the fair without competi-

tion. Each will receive a par-

ticipation ribbon. You may

display a poster or display

board along with the Cloverbud Record.

This year Cloverbuds will NOT be part of the

interviewing process on Tuesday, July 21st.

Nor will they be included in 4-H Fashion Re-

view in 2020. Contact Gisele Jefferson in ad-

vance for more information.

We encourage you to check the weights of

your animals often to ensure that you are with-

in the acceptable weight range. A code for

the lock on the fairgrounds scales is available

from our office upon request.

Stall Fees Just a reminder that stall/entry fees are due for

each animal you bring to fair. Fees are $1/

head or $.50/pen in the poultry barn.

Stall fees will be collected at weigh-in and you will NOT be

allowed to enter the scale until fees are paid.

If you are showing a breeding animal that is

not weighed in, please pay your superinten-

dent when you enter your animals or pay the

fairboard attendant during weigh in.

State Fair General/FCS Projects As of today, all state fair eligible

general and FCS projects will be

judged during the week of August

17th. Projects will NOT be dis-

played at state fair this year after

judging. State fair projects need

to be at the Extension office on

Monday, Aug 17th to travel to

state fair. Projects will be availa-

ble for pickup on Monday, Aug

24th.

Where is the Extension Office during fair? We are located in the southeast corner of the Events center starting on Monday of the fair.

Where do I find the schedule and rules for the fair? We have attached a schedule with this newsletter. Additional schedules can be picked up at the Extension office or downloaded from the fair website: ec-roundup.com. A complete fairbook can be purchased from our office for $5 or down-loaded from the county fair website at ec-roundup.com. The schedule is subject to change.

Livestock Exhibitors What do I bring for my livestock? You’ll need to bring your animal(s) and all of the supplies to keep them comfortable for the week. Don’t forget bedding! The beef barn has sand supplied but the other barns will require you to bring your own wood shavings or bedding. No straw is al-lowed. Other things to remember include feed, feed pans, water buckets/waterers, a hose, extension cords, rakes, shovels, show supplies and fans or something to keep ani-mals cool.

When do animals have to be there? Barns will open Monday morning and you can start bringing supplies and animals any-time following that. Your stalls will be as-signed by club/chapter for the large barns so touch base with your leader to ensure you have space reserved. Animals will need to be on the grounds be-fore your species weigh in time (see sched-ule). You will need to attempt to keep 6 feet between family groupings (tack areas/common areas) for safe social distancing in the barns.

LIVESTOCK CONSIGNMENTS All 4-H and FFA members must consign their

livestock by Thursday, July 30 at 2:00 p.m.!

All market animals must be accounted for

on the consignment form. This means that

you’ll need to tell us what animals are going

home, what animals will be selling, what an-

imals will be shipping, and what animals will

be going to a locker plant. Be sure to ac-

count for all market animals at the fair, even

those that may not have made weight or

shown!

Consignment Options:

SHIP: Any animals that were not sold in the

sale and are within the department weight

limits are eligible to be shipped with other

fair animals for a buyback price. These pric-

es are posted in the Extension office and

have been pre-arranged through the sale

committee. Transportation is arranged for

these animals. All shipped animals will be

charged a ship fee of $5/hd. Please note

that prices for buybacks; especially in hogs

and cattle, may be low this year. Market

prices of lambs and goats are also ex-

pected to drop prior to fair.

LOCKER ANIMALS: If you are planning to

send your animal to a locker plant, it is your

responsibility to set up an appointment with

the locker and make arrangements for

transportation. Some lockers will pick up

sale animals so you can check to see if that

is an option. If you need a list of local lock-

ers, please contact the Extension office to-

day. Most lockers are completely booked this year so please make plans now if you

are wanting locker processing!

JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SALE: Each member

may consign up to two animals for the sale

(can not be from the same species). Ani-

mals must make weight and be shown in

regular market classes to be eligible for sale.

The sale will consist of three “rounds”. All

champions/reserve champions that have

been consigned will sell in the first round.

The second and third round will be random-

ly generated but all exhibitors will have a

chance to sell in the first or second round

before spots are drawn for the third round.

Junior Livestock Sale Information

JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SALE PHOTOS All livestock selling in the junior livestock sale

must be photographed prior to the sale for

use on buyer thank you cards. A complete

photo schedule will be posted at fair. It is your responsibility to see that the pictures of

your sale animals are taken! Photos will be

printed and attached to your buyer card

for you to pick up during the livestock sale

on Friday. Photos will be paid for by the jun-

ior livestock sale committee. If you choose

to have additional photos taken, they will

available at your cost and can be picked

up Friday afternoon at the Extension office

on the fairgrounds.

THANK YOU’s As mentioned above, you will be responsi-

ble for getting a photo taken for a photo

buyer card. Typically those cards are

picked up during the sale and personally

presented to your buyer; however, we are

working on a new process this year to re-

duce the face to face contact with buyers.

We are also discouraging giving buyers a

thank you gift on the night of the sale. If

you’d like to present a token of your appre-

ciation, we ask that you follow up with buy-

ers after fair. After fair, you are also ex-

pected to follow up with a formal thank you

card. Thank you cards are available after

fair at the Extension office. All members

should pick up a card, fill it out and return it

to the Extension office. Please do not mail

the thank you as we’ll need to verify that

the card was turned in before your check

can be issued. This is expected of all 4-H

and FFA members selling through the sale.

SALE RULES! All exhibitors must show in

showmanship class in the species

they are selling in the sale. Any exhibitor

who chooses not to show in showmanship in

a specific species will not be allowed to sell

in that species.

No Catch It animals will be allowed to sell.

Poultry: Only the Champion and Reserve

Champion Market Poultry will be allowed to

sell.

awards will be sponsored by the

Kessinger Family. Applications/

Nominations are due July 21st and the

award will be presented during the fair.

Club leaders may nominate one or more of

their first year members (8+ yrs old). Four

criteria will be looked at:

1. Attendance at club meetings

2. Involvement in club/county activities

3. Cooperative attitude

4. Project work

Members will also be recognized at the

county level during the annual achieve-

ment program in the fall.

4-H Horsemanship Award Friends of the Larry Eatherton family and the

Washington County 4-H Council continue to

sponsor a trophy and savings bond to rec-

ognize one 4-H member in the horse project

who makes the best effort in four areas: at-

titude, club participation, improvement in

horsemanship skills, and sportsmanship.

Club leaders should submit nominations by

July 21st to the Extension Office.

4-H COUNTY COUNCIL

The County Council is made up of dele-

gates from each club in our county. Coun-

cil comes together to adopt policy about

our 4-H programs, plan upcoming 4-H activ-

ities, and provide leadership opportunities

above your club level. Council delegates

and officers are encouraged to attend dis-

trict, state and national events including the

Leadership Development Conference

(Denver—Jan), State 4-H Conference (Ft

Collins—June) and Citizenship Washington

Focus (DC—June).

Any member may attend meetings and is

encouraged to get involved but each club

can only have two voting members. It is ex-

tremely important that your voting dele-

gates attend so that your club is represent-

ed! To find out more, please plan to attend

our September council meeting to be held

on September 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Court-

house Annex.

The council has met virtually in April and

June and will meet in September to elect

officers for the upcoming year. Watch fu-

ture newsletters for more details.

Raffle Tickets

Just a reminder that every member needs

to turn in their raffle tickets by July 21st.

Tickets were given out this spring for our an-

nual raffle typically held at our carnival. The

raffle was rescheduled to be drawn during

fair on Friday, July 31 at 6:00 p.m.

The tickets are orange and each member

should have received three books of tickets.

If you have already sold the tickets, please

turn them in ASAP. If you have not sold tick-

ets, you can request labels that can be at-

tached to the tickets to indicate the new

drawing date. Every member has to sell 3

books of tickets for your club to receive your

share of the proceeds.

ALL SOLD and UNSOLD tickets must be

accounted for!

When can we meet as a club again? Colorado 4-H remains under restrictions for face to face programs; however, we are working to open up a select few programs going forward. Clubs that would like to host activities and meetings can work with our of-fice to submit a program plan for approval. All face to face programs, including club meetings, will still need to be approved and abide by health guidance for our county and state.

Please note that these restrictions are for any organized 4-H activity. Before doing any sort of gathering (community service, meeting, tour, etc) we will need to submit a program plan! Will fair go on? YES! The fairboard is committed to giving our community the most normal fair that they can. As of July 1st, the only things cancelled have been the rabbit show (not due to COVID but due to rabbit hemorrhagic dis-ease) and the county carnival/games. Bingo will not be available due to at risk volunteers. Food vendors have not been confirmed but it appears that the Elks booth will not open this year.

If you are sick or choose not to attend the fair, you can still complete your project. Contact our office if you have questions or concerns.

We do ask that all of you work with us to try to distance yourselves during fair. In barns, try to space family common areas/tack spaces six feet apart. In buildings, be sure to watch sign-age for entrance and exits. We will also be trying to limit contact with staff and volunteers so please respect their safety and work to-gether to ensure everyone is protected.

Informed Consent Forms

EVERY active member and volunteer needs to sign a new consent form for 4-H due to COVID. Instructions were emailed on Mon-day to every family (check your spam folder if you didn’t receive it). Forms can be up-loaded in 4honline or printed and returned to our office. Completed forms are required before you can participate in any face to face programming including fair! Contact us if you still need forms.

Fair Changes As of today, these are some of the fair changes that we know of:

Cloverbuds: Cloverbuds will not interview this year. Please submit your record book and poster to our office.

Fashion Revue: Fashion revue will not be open to the public and will take place in the afternoon instead of the evening.

Talent Show: CANCELLED

Rabbit Show: The rabbit show was cancelled due to rabbit hemorrhagic disease.

Livestock sale: Only buyers will be allowed to watch the sale and no kids under 18 will be allowed in the stands. The BBQ is still being planned (subject to change) which takes place prior to the sale at 4:30 in the pavilion area.

Livestock shows: Classes may be smaller than in past years to account for distancing. As of today, animals will be stalled all week with spacing between families in the barns.

Ultrasound Contest: CANCELLED

Horse show: Please remember that the horse show changed to Monday of fair this year. A few class and rule changes have been made, see fairbook for details. Horses must be entered by July 20 and no open class en-tries will be accepted.
