AKRON has access to powerful calculation programsfor the dimensioning of fan units. Avvikande densitetRedovisade ktdiagram gller fr densitet 1,2kg/m,

dvs fr luft vid havsniv med temperatur 20C och relativfuktighet 50%. Flktens luftde och verkningsgradpverkas ej av avvikande densitet, dremot r tryckupp-sttning och effektbehov proportionella mot densiteten.

Anvnd tabellen nedan fr att korrigera fr avvikandedensitet. I frekommande fall mste korrektion grasfr bde hjd ver havet och fr temperatur.

Exempel: En kt skall ge 1100Pa vid arbete 900munder mark och vid temperaturen 0C. Korrektionfr niv respektive temperatur ger att densiteten rca 20% hgre n vad som gller i ktdiagrammet(1,114x1,073=1,195).

Fan Theory

Density deviation

Diagrams in this catalogue are valid for an air density

of 1,2kg/m, i.e. at sea level, 20C and 50% relativehumidity. Air ow and fan efciency are not affected by

deviating density, however both pressure developmentand shaft power are proportional to the air density.

Use the table below to make corrections for deviatingdensity. It may be necessary to correct for bothtemperature and altitude

Example: The desired pressure from a fan is 1100Paat 900m below sea level and 0C. Correcting for altitudeand temperature gives that air density is approximately20% above normal conditions (1,114x1,073=1,195).

In the diagram, look for a fan that gives 920Pa at 1,2kg/m. Note that the shaft power given in the diagrammust be increased by 20% for the correct dimensioningof the motor.

Fan laws for uniformity, rotational

speed and density

The relations below show how shaft power, pressuredevelopment and volume ow depend on size, rotationalspeed and density.

The Uniformity laws show how the size affects theperformance.Ex: A by all means doubling of the size gives 8times the airow, 4 times the pressure and 32times the shaft power.

The Rotational Speed lawsEx: Doubling the rotational speed gives twice

the air ow, 4 times the pressure and 8 times theshaft power.

The Density laws

Ex: Increasing the density by 20% gives 20%higher pressure rise and 20% higher shaft power.

Air ow is not affected.

Combining all three laws leads to the expressionsto the left.

Applications with extremely short impeller blades

For cases where both great power and a demand forsmall diameter is requiered calculations become more

Pressure losses at fan outlet

Wherever a fan units total pressure is shown in adiagram the dynamic pressure is calculated from aat velocity prole over the cross section. However,

immediately after a fan or after a diffuser mounted onthe fan outlet the air velocity is uneven. Flat velocity isapproximated to occur after an equalization distanceLE, according to diagram.

Correction factor A is an approximation of outletlosses at a fan or diffusor compared to outlet lossesafter a at velocity prole.

Ex. An outlet loss occurring directly after a 112cmdiameter impeller with 40cm hub will be about 17%greater than if it occurs after a straight duct.

Pressure transformation in diffusers

When air speed is decreased in a diffuser, pressure istransformed from dynamic to static. The transformationis most efcient at a distance from any disturbance like

Loss factor B is the pressure loss in the diffuser aspart of the dynamic pressure in the diffuser inlet. Ifthe diffuser is attached directly to the fan outlet B isincreased: B

Calculation with a silencer. A silencers ability toreduce noise depends on size, material and theconstruction. The attenuation is also different in eachoctave band. Reduce the sound power level with theattenuation of the silencer before calculating the soundlevel by logarithmic summation.

Serial mounting of fan unitsWhen pressure demands are higher than what can beaccomplished with a single stage fan unit, two or morefans may be installed in a series. The entire airow will

pass each stage and the pressure development of eachseparate impeller can be accounted for. To obtain thedimensioning pressure per stage the total pressure(including dynamic) is split evenly between the stages.Each stage is always driven by a separate motor.

AKD

The AKD- series covers diameters 310 -1250 mm. TheAKD consists of two fan units with counter rotatingimpellers facing each other. Angles and positions of

the impellers are calculated and tested for each sizeindividually for optimal cooperation and efciency.

For fans larger than diameter 1250 the AKD is notavailable. Two or more similar fan units with guidevanes following each impeller may then be connectedafter another.

This type of fan unit is always dimensioned for thespecic project.

Y/D-start: Med Y-koppling minskar startstrmmen tillca 30% jmfrt med direktstart och startmomentetreduceras till ca 25%. Allt fr lga startmomentger lnga startfrlopp och kan frorsaka avsevrdmotoruppvrmning. Vid offentligt nt anvnder mannormalt Y/D-start fr motorer frn och med 5,5 kW.

Automatisk Y/D-start fr en- och erstegsktartillverkas av AKRON.

Elektronisk mjukstart: Mjukstart ger lg startstrmoch mjlighet att anpassa startmomentet efter behov.Stora motorer kan drfr startas i nt med begrnsadkapacitet. Mjukstarten kan spara energi medfaskompenserande spnningsminskning och orsakaringa moment- eller strmtransienter.

Frekvensomriktare: r ofta den bsta startmetoden,

i synnerhet om man vill varvtalsreglera kten efteruppstart.

Starting and speed control

Starting methods

Direct on line, DOL: Inexpensive and simple, startingcurrent is 6-8 times greater than the motor rating whichmay cause disturbance in the mains. Small motors,normally up to 4,0 kW, are commonly DOL started.Considerably larger motors can be DOL started ifconnected to a private net.

DOL starters are manufactured by AKRON.

Star-Delta S/D-start:When starting a star connectedmotor the starting current is reduced to about 30%compared to DOL and the starting torque is reduced toabout 25%. Too low starting torque prolong the starting

time and may lead to excessive heating of the motor. Inpublic nets it is common to use S/D-starters on motorsfrom 5,5 kW and up.

Automatic S/D-starters for single and multistage fansare manufactured by AKRON.

Electronic soft start:A soft starter uses a low startingcurrent and offers a possibility to adapt the startingtorque to demand. Hence large motors can be startedon a power supply net with limited capacity. Soft startingis energy efcient and does not cause any torque- orcurrent transients.

Frequency converter: The superior starting method,especially if it is desirable to control fan speed afterstart-up.

Speed control

Two speed motors are available with separate statorwindings, each with different number of poles or withone set of stator windings where all or half of the polescan be used, a so called Dahlander motor. A two speedmotor with low torque at the lower speed is alwayssuitable for driving a fan. Switching numbers of poles isdone in the fan units starter equipment.

Frequency control is generally the best method ofspeed control and start up of a fan. Benets includelarge energy savings at lower speeds. Cooling problemsmay occur below 20 Hz and magnetization problemsbelow 10 Hz. Exact frequencies where such problemsoccur differ between motors and frequency converters.Frequency converters may need to be tted with a lternot to cause disturbance in the mains and/or a brakingresistance to protect the converter from retardationalforces.

When using a frequency-converter the motor windingsshould be tted with thermo contacts or thermistors to

prevent overheating.

AKRONs axial fan unit PFV for wall or modular mount,where a number of units are mounted in parallel, isdesigned for environments where enhanced corrosionprotection is required. PFV has an integrated squaremounting frame with attachment points in the corners.

The PFV casing is offered in 100%stainless materials, steel and aluminium.

PFV comes with any of AKRONs axialimpellers, either solid cast or adjustable.

RFL -Radial

ow fan unitsAKRONs radial ow fanunits RFL are designedfor the transport ofdry and clean air in

ventilation systems. The RFL may, by using specialconnection parts (accessories), be connected toducting on both suction and pressure side. Commonlythe RFL is supplied with blow-off direction 1 as shownin gure.

The casing and impeller in the RFL are made of wetpainted steel, type wpt. A simple galvanized support

frame is included in the fan casing. The transportedair must not exceed 60C nor contain aggressive orexplosive components.

The impeller has backward curved blades and is bothstatically and dynamically balanced. The impeller is,in the standard version, left rotating (clockwise seenfrom the suction side) and is mounted directly onto themotors shaft extension.

A wire guard, mounted on the suction side, is includedin the RFL fan unit. A wire guard on the pressure side(accessory) must be tted if the unit is installed in a waythat makes that side accessible.

TurboClean - Dust extraction

fanAKRONs dust extraction fan unit TurboClean (TC) is acombined fan and extraction unit intended to separatedust from contaminated air in e.g. cereal plants. The TCis available with three capacities, 15, 22 and 30kW, andtwo mounting congurations, vertical and horizontal.

The dust extraction is achieved when the centrifugalforce on the particles in the strongly rotating air streamupstream the separation unit moves the particles outto the periphery of the casing. The peripheral part ofthe air is then stripped off and led to a cyclone wherethe particles are separated. The clean exhaust air fromthe cyclone is then again headed to the fan inlet. Theseparation efciency, which depends on the particularairow and particle size, has been tested by theTechnical Research Institute of Sweden and is undernormal ow conditions about 95% for visible particles.

The fan casing and the separation unit are made fromhot dip galvanized steel and the impeller in wet paintedsteel. Other components are zink coated.

The impeller in the TC is a diagonal impeller withparticularly high efciency and low noise. The impeller,which has backward curved blades is both staticallyand dynamically balanced, and mounted directly ontothe motors shaft extension.

RGFA -Flue gas fan unitAKRONs ue gas fan unit RGFA is intended for thetransport of gases with temperatures up to 400C.

The RGFA casing is manufactured from steel, all jointsare fully welded. The RGFA impeller, also fully welded,has straight radially directed blades with a high self-cleansing ability not allowing e.g. soot particles beingaccumulated and causing imbalance.

The motor of insulation class F has standard bearings.An insulating adapter, mounted on the shaft betweenthe impeller and the motor, protects the motor bearingsfrom overheating. The ambient air, which cools themotor and the adapter, must not exceed of 40C. Motors

for higher ambient temperatures are available onrequest.

The inlet of the RGFA can be rotated to t at anyangle. The outlet of the smaller size, RGFA-20, hasa pre-mounted ue gas throttle. The gas ow of thelarger size, RGFA-45, is adjusted either with a throttle(accessory) or a frequency converter.

LDC is manufactured in galvanized steel.The absorbing layer is 100mm. The in-an ou e s o e s encer are es gneto t directly on AKRONs fans for ductmount, for example AB, AK or AKD.

LDC comes with or without a circularcentre pod. The pods have diametersmatching the hubs on AKRONs axial

impellers. The pressure losses caused bythe pod may therefore be ignored.

Buttery dampers. AKRONs butterydampers are available in two types; FSLfor most ordinary cases, and the enforced

FS designed for the toughest applications,including mines and tunnels. Both types areavailable with adjustable spring resistance,the pressure of the fan then opens thedamper. FS can also be motor operated.When the damper is open, pressure lossesare kept to a minimum by placing the twoshafts, onto which the damper vanes areattached, inline in the ow direction and byxing the vanes to the shafts in an aerodynamical manner.

Kanalanslutning.Spiroanslutning,fr anslutning av kt mot spirokanal,tillverkas i galvad stlplt och klmsfast mot ktens utlopp med hjlp aven motns, se ovan. Anslutningenr gummittad och har nippelmtt.

AKRON tillhandahller ven kraftigavarmgalvaniserade anslutningar frmontage av kt mot andra cirkulrakanaler.

Flns.Flnsar fr anslutning av kt mott.ex. kanal eller vgg tillhandahlls i ettertal utfranden; storlekar t.o.m. 630mmvanligen i 3mm galvat och fr.o.m. 800mm

vanligen i 5mm lackerat stl.

Flange.Flanges for connection of fans toducts, walls etc. are provided in severalversions; sizes up 630mm usually in 3mmgalvanized and from 800mm usually in

5mm painted steel.

Diffuser. A diffuser converts kineticenergy into static, ie into pressure; thedesired pressure development is reachedwith lower energy consumption. Theopening angle should be small and thereduction in speed large, a good diffuser

is therefore usually long. AKRONs shortdiffuser with conical insert solves thisproblem in an elegant manner. AKRONdiffusers are usually hot dip galvanizedand dimensioned for the specied project.

Duct connection.Adapters connecting thefans to spiral ductings are manufactured ingalvanized steel. The adapter is clampedon to the fans outlet by using a ange,see above. The adapter is rubber sealedand has male dimensions. AKRON also

provides heavy duty hot-dip galvanizedadapters for mounting fans to any othertype of circular duct.
