George Washington

George Washington was the very first President of the United States. He became President in 1789. He served as Commander in Chief of the Continental Armies. He played a major role in the American Revolution. Since 1968, numerous portraits of Washington can be found in the National Portrait Gallery. In 1759, Washington married Martha Dandridge Curtis. A fever took Martha’s life in 1802.

George Washington George Washington was born to Augustine Washington. in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Washington was home schooled. He was interested in geography, history, agriculture, and militia. He enjoyed horses and was considered an avid and excellent horseman. He was large in stature.

George Washington George Washington inherited Mount Vernon after his brother’s death. Mount Vernon Plantation was a tobacco plantation. Washington was considered to be one of Virginia’s wealthiest individuals. In addition to earning money due to a rise in the cost/price of tobacco, Washington married Martha Curtis. She was a young widow with two children and a large estate. Both George and Martha are buried at Mount Vernon.
