There are approximately 80 display booths available for rent–all under one roof! Organizers are inviting exhibitors that represent a wide variety of businesses specializing in home renovating, decorating and for the first time ever in The Beach, recreational products and other related services. We hope to reinforce the importance of the recreational aspect of our economy, especially at a time when the fall and winter seasons are upon us.Many special attractions are planned for the show so there is sure to be something of interest for all visitors. There is an extensive, multi layered marketing plan being designed to promote attendance including and not limited to; print, signage, radio, regional press releases and direct mail. Businesses that are early to confirm participation will be able to maximize the potential inclusion of their business in this marketing plan. The number of “similar” businesses or products will be limited in order to capitalize on customer outcomes and to promote a variety of services. Food will be available at the onsite snack bar. Practice Makes Perfect “If you do something many times you will learn to do it very well” and that’s what Maureen Andersen, President of Wasaga Beach Garden Club said to her partners during practices. They used their seed spreaders doing their precision routine in freezing cold during the Wasaga Beach Santa Claus Parade on November 24th. The club is for people interested in gardening.

In a previous Point of View, I expressed my opinions relating to the great opportunity we may have, to bring gaming as a creative and positive aspect to our tourism industry in Wasaga Beach. I suggested that although a standalone casino may not benefit our fledgling industry, the opportunity to add a small gaming component to a much needed, family friendly entertainment and accommodation complex is an important one!Council has voted on welcoming a gaming facility into our community and now has chosen 4 locations they deem as appropriate. As a supporter of this opportunity to help our one and only industry in Wasaga Beach, I am concerned about their suggested locations.Since the early 1900s our Main Beach has been the hub of entertainment and tourism! This area should not be excluded from any development site that may include gaming. Again, if treated as a small component to complement the bigger picture of an entertainment development, it would be a perfect fit for our dream of a rejuvenated beachfront, in hopes of regaining our status as a true waterfront resort destination. If the only perceived negative to Main Beach development of this type of facility is traffic concerns... deal with it! There are countless ideas for creative satellite parking areas and equally creative ways for efficient and environmentally friendly transportation of visitors.If there was a valid reason to ignore the beachfront location as a site for this type of development, then it must be at the east end of town (actually north, but that’s a topic for another Point of View!) or Main Street area of town!This opportunity to include gaming in future development is welcomed as we need to boost existing local businesses while giving some an incentive to upgrade and improve their services.Wasaga Beach like most communities has a main street and ours is actually called Main Street. In recent years we have seen needed development and growth in all areas of town, but our Main Street and surrounding area should not be forgotten. It needs to be returned to its former status as the hub of commerce and tourism. It took the welcomed development of a private developer to start the needed reinvention of our Main Street area with the well designed Stonebridge Town Centre. Let’s keep the momentum going in bringing our Main Street back, as this area, including the Main Beach area, should continue to be the commercial and entertainment centre devoted to our only industry, tourism!A gaming facility located anywhere close to highway 26 will not serve our local and struggling economy as is the hope of this once in a lifetime opportunity! With a recognized and unique development including gaming close to the new highway 26, it will in fact become the “Wasaga Beach By-Pass”, as visitors will enjoy the easy access to our neighbouring communities... that are already well ahead of us in catering to the visiting tourists!The Main Street area of Wasaga Beach needs this opportunity! Let’s not hand it over on a silver platter to another community to reap the benefits. Our Main Street and our Main Beach have welcomed tourists for over 100 years and should continue to do so for many more years into the future!Joe Bickerstaff

PUBLIC CONSULTATION FOR POTENTIAL GAMING FACILITY IN WASAGA BEACH – WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

In late May of this year, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced their intention to expand private sector gaming in Ontario by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) seeking input from potential providers as it expands regulated private-sector gaming in Ontario.

Wasaga Beach has been identified in Zone C7 along with the Town of Collingwood, Clearview Township and the Township of Springwater. The OLG has indicated that each identified zone will only support one gaming facility and will ensure any new gaming facilities are not in close proximity to an existing gaming operation.

The Town of Wasaga Beach is seeking input of residents and business owners on whether or not it should support the OLG possibly locating a gaming facility in Wasaga Beach. Comments may be directed to the Office of the CAO by e-mail to or by written letter to 30 Lewis Street, Wasaga Beach, Ontario L9Z 1A1, to the attention of the Office of CAO. The municipal Councils in Zone C7 have agreed to host a joint Public thInformation meeting on Tuesday, October 16 at the RecPlex in Wasaga

Beach located at 1724 Mosley Street at 7:00 p.m. OLG officials will be in attendance to provide information on the proposed gaming facility opportunity for Zone C7 to Members of Council and the public. Due to the nature of the meeting, OLG representatives will only be taking questions from members of Council. Any questions from the public are required to be provided to members of Council from the respective municipalities so that they can be posed to the OLG representatives at the meeting.

With the Christmas holiday shopping season getting underway, I would like to suggest a number of ways to make sure that your purchases make it under the Christmas tree and not into the hands of an opportunistic thief. During this time of the year, we have in the past, seen a rather disturbing trend that has seen sadness and not the joy that the season should bring. Some safe shopping tips are:1) Keep wallets and purses safely secured on your person at all times, not left unattended in a shopping cart as you go looking for that perfect gift.2) Don't carry large amounts of currency. Utilize debit and or credit cards and only carry those cards you are planning to use. Remember to always protect and shield your PIN number from wondering eyes.3) If using cash, only obtain it from recognized financial institution banking machines and not stand alone ATM's as many of the standalone units are known to be targets of various skimming devices.4) Don't carry large amounts of gifts. Take them to your car and secure them in a trunk or in the case of sport utility vehicles or pickup trucks, place them on the floor and cover them with a blanket.5) Always make sure your vehicle is locked both in the store parking lot and at home.6) Park your vehicle in a well-lit area where you can quickly and easily find it.7) When travelling to your parked vehicle do so with keys ready and once in lock all your doors again.All businesses should exercise caution at this time of year through reinforcement and review of crime prevention measures. Ensuring that all staff review current internal crime prevention policies and are aware of their surroundings, including the behaviour of clients, can go a long way towards preventing a possible crime. Also it is important to make certain that time deposit safes are in place and locked, video surveillance measures are in place and properly adjusted to assist in the identification of persons should a crime occur. In order to minimize any potential financial losses, managers should see that minimal amounts of cash are available at any given time. Routines with respect to the handling of cash should be avoided and staff charged with the transition of money to a financial institution should do so in the company of other staff at times and these times should vary. I encourage business owners and employees to contact Police immediately should they observe any suspicious activity or persons either in or around their business. Simcoe County announces the opening of a new walk-in counseling clinic in Collingwood. The clinic opens its doors on December 6th, with an official media launch between 12:00 – 1:00 pm. This marks the sixth location for the organization in Simcoe County, thanks in part to the financial support of the United Way of South Georgian Bay. I'm excited to introduce to you my first featured entertainment section in this week's beach BOOSTER. We live in a great community and as the town is growing so is the entertainment/events. Beside my love for real estate, I have a passion for this industry having worked in radio and television over the past years. It is my pleasure to provide you with local happenings in Wasaga Beach.

Let me begin with the 6th Annual Meaford International Film Festival (MIFF) from August 30th to September 2nd, 2012. MIFF was instrumental in giving us a helping hand with our very first WBSFF and continues to share our vision of nurturing our festival for years to come. Four films were presented this year: Saalam Dunk, The Dynamiter, Under African Skies, A Separation. I attended the opening night premiered of Saalam Dunk. Filmed in Iraq and produced by Beau Lewis with director David Fine this documentary is based on a team of girls in their first season, the joy of their first win to the pain of losing the American coach who inspired them, this film offers a vision of what Iraq could become. It was very inspiring and must say tearful at times.

Rogers TV Fall Launch opened their doors on September 6th to unveil seven new series added to the many returning favourites. Rogers TV is a unique TV channel where community members take an active role in conceptualizing and producing television shows for local audiences. Fire and Sound Fire and Sound, our local boys from Wasaga Beach, dropped by our Beachboosterradio.com studio for an interview on Beach Corner. The boys garnered attention with their latest hit “One Time Girl” on the New Hot 89.9 FM Hall of Fame from Ottawa and on

B101 (101.1 Barrie's Hit Music Station) they won “Smash It or Trash It” and our boys “Smashed It” according to B101 it was one of their busiest night. It all started in Grade 8 at Stayner Collegiate Institute where they met as friends and decided to form a band, featuring Tyler Chapman (guitar/vocals), Colin Scott (Bass/Vocals), Edward Engel (Guitar/vocals), and Kayton "Mickey" Zarhloul (Drums), influenced by Blink 182 which you can hear in their music and One New Direction along with their fondness for Katie Perry – their pop style music can be compared to Simple Plan. In 2011, they've added a line-up of producers and writers such as Jesse Colburn, guitarist from Punk Closet and Monster who also worked on Avril Lavigne's project as well as Arron Verdonk two-time Juno Nominee from Stereos and Miles Holmwood guitarist of Stereos, Producer, Engineer and Operator of Spin. Recently, completed a vocal track “Called You Up” an upbeat ballot with a seventeen year-old, Karli Bortolotto, who has an incredible voice, scheduled for release sometime in January 2013. Social media helped develop their fan base now on seven stations thanks to their continued support with Facebook and Twitter. Fire and Sound also performed five times at the Opera House and attended the Canadian Music Week two years ago. When asked about the meaning of their song “One Time Girl”, Tyler explained the melody came to him one night after completing all of their songs – “It's the attraction you have with someone and didn't get a chance to get to know that girl.” Fire and Sound will be presenting our very first Music Video Awards at our upcoming Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival scheduled January 26th, 2013. People have lived among the Blue Mountains of the Niagara Escarpment for nearly eleven thousand years. Sometime after the glaciers receded from around Georgian Bay, humans began hunting in the higher reaches of what was once known as Collingwood Township, now the Town of the Blue Mountains. These fur-clad hunters with their stone spear-points would have found the area free of ice and meltwater. Known as the Palaeo-Indians, they roamed the forests high above the Bay for nearly three thousand years, leaving behind a treasure of stone tools.Several historic periods followed including the one that archeologists call the Woodland Age. As the weather warmed, Woodland people developed new weapons including the bow and arrow. Supplementing their hunting with agriculture, they left a record of their existence buried in campsites at the foot of the Blue Mountains. Over time, the Woodland Indians gave way to Algonquin-speaking bands who preferred the rocky highlands, camping in the shelter of rock recesseslike those at the Scenic Caves.In one such recess they left behind a thousand year-old clay pot. Hundreds of years later, it was found by a pioneer named Thomas McIlfaterick, inverted, dry and protected. The oldest complete First Nation’s vessel in southern Ontario, it wasgiven to John Johnston who ran the Kolapore cooperage and mill who, in turn, gaveit to Gerald White of Heathcote. White, realizing the significance of the artifact, sent it in 1895 to the Royal Ontario Museum.During the 15th century, one hundred years before the first Europeans arrived in theGeorgian Bay area, bands of Algonquins used a series of trails that led from the Beaver Valley up over the Blue Mountains to small settlements near the Scenic Caves. Seasonal in nature, these sites have been explored by archeologists who have discovered fragments of clay pots and stone pipe bowls. By 1600, the Algonquins were making way for a new tribe – Iroquois speaking people known at the Petuns.

Well, the snow seems to have set in, the sunshine is gone, the clouds are here and we are asking ourselves, how long will this last? Welcome all trail riders to the 2012/13 winter season. With early snow and our best guess weather experts saying an old fashion winter, we look forward to providing the best riding in Ontario again this season. The Wasaga Snowmobile Club has been very busy repairing trails and establishing this season’s route throughout our area. The club establishes and maintains over 110 kilometers of local trail system here in Wasaga which connects to over 30,000 kilometers of trails in Ontario. We are the Central area of Snowmobiling in the Province and yes you can get there from here. The Wasaga Snowmobile Club is very fortunate to have an outstanding relationship with our Town Council, Town employees as well as with the Ministry of Natural Resources that enables us to facilitate an ever evolving trail system throughout this Provincial Park known as Wasaga Beach. Land owners within our trail system are very generous to allow us the use of their private lands which make trail connections possible. Please show your support back to them by always staying on the marked trail; after all it is the safest place to ride. The support we receive from the local businesses is the envy of Clubs from all over the Province and their support is directly invested back on the snow. Please support those establishments that support your club and our sport. Billboard signs are placed throughout the trails for your convenience and local business can provide trail maps showing the diversity this region has to offer. Our Club house is located at the Wasaga Sports Park on Klondike Park road with lots of parking for staging. This season we planning to focus on local club activities getting back to the fun and camaraderie that has made us one of the oldest, award winning Clubs in the Province. We are in the process of finalizing a charity ride as part of the Wasaga Snowman Mania festivities in February. Wasaga Beach Lions Club Induction Another Four New Members Last Monday

The Wasaga Beach Lions Club will face an another increase in its Bingo licensing fees after the town last year increased the fee to the WB Lions Club when operating the bingos on Friday Nights at the RecPlex.The fee is calculated on the basis of the amount of prize money paid out at bingo.Now the Wasaga Beach Council

brought a decision to increase the fee to 2% and thus cut into the club’s proceeds that are used for funding its charity work. The Lions Club was not given the opportunity for rebuttal and apparently there is no appeal.

Council at that time stated they would impose a Fee which would cover the time needed by staff to do the administrative work connected with issuing the License. That time was stated to be about 1% of prize money. In spite of that, however, Council decided to double the fee. Now, with the increase to 2%, the Lions Club will have to pay around $6,000 in licensing fees, thereby reducing the amount normally given by the Club to worthwhile causes in the Community.

A 1% fee was imposed in February.

With the popularity of snowmobiling catching on in the late 60’s and early 70’s, there was all kinds of optimism in Wasaga Beach that finally we had come to a point where we could truly be a four season destination. We had it all with the snow, the hotels that lined the beach and river and all within an easy drive up the 400 from Toronto. Hotel, bar and restaurant owners rushed to winterize their establishments and advertised “Open All Year” for the first time in Wasaga’s history. The Nottawasaga River seemed to freeze completely every year, providing a smooth and fun “throughway”, allowing access to most points in town. Hotels welcomed sledders into their dining rooms and beverage rooms with great meals and live entertainment. Motel rooms were occupied with snowmobilers and parking lots lined with cars and trailers. Once visitors unloaded their sleds, these snow machines provided the only means of transportation necessary for the rest of the stay in Wasaga Beach. River front establishments like the Dyconia Resort, The Nancy Villa, The Allistonia Hotel and The Apollo were just a quick zip up or down the frozen Nottawasaga, while even the famous Windjammer Room of the Capstan Inn on the beach opened to entertain the devotees of this new winter sport. Wasaga Beach became known as The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario as enthusiasts from all over south and central Ontario discovered our town as true Winter Getaway. Close enough... but far enough to provide the fresh air, the openness and of course the much longed for snow! To serve the sledders, Wasaga Beach boasted first class dealerships for most of the major snowmobile manufactures. Bing Jowett’s Four Seasons Sports sold Arctic Cat sleds and grew to be able to boast that they were the biggest Arctic Cat dealership in Ontario. Yes, the sign stated... “Ontario’s Largest Cat House”! The Wasaga Beach Winter Carnival attracted even more folks as special events were held in the centre of the frozen river, under the Main Street Bridge. Radar Runs and thrill riders jumping ramps added to the fun. Whipper Billy Watson hosted his famous Snowarama from Wasaga Beach. Although we don’t get the use of the river in the winters of today as it does not seem to freeze as it did in the past, the Wasaga Snowmobile Club provides us with some of the best maintained marked snowmobile trails in the country! Wasaga Beach is snowmobile friendly and we and our visitors can ride sleds almost anywhere on our local roads that connect us to the trail system and of course the beach. The Barrie Concert Band returns to Wasaga Beach for their 8th concert at the Lighthouse Community Church. 800 Sunnidale Road. Sunday, December 9th at 7pm.

All funds from a goodwill offering go to the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank. We are very proud of this community in that donations received from 7 previous concerts and attended by 1700 guests have raised a total of $25,500.00 for our local food bank. What better time of year for the help needed for this very worthy cause.

Immediately following the 90 minute concert, the Lighthouse Church ladies will serve an assortment of Christmas goodies. Tim Horton's will supply coffee, hot chocolate and Timbits.

A large crowd is expected this year and we urge guests to come early. Doors open at 6:15 pm. The church will provide a tax receipt to anyone making a donation of $25.00 or more. Please come and bring a friend. You will be glad you did!
