Music Angel Gets High Praise

After having a chance to try the Music Angel I can truly say I’m impressed. The sound is great and the convenience of a small portable speaker system with an internal rechargeable battery can’t be beat. It’s so versatile I’ve enjoyed using it while in my office, relaxing on the deck and surfing the internet. It

has turned my Ipad from a device that cuts you off from the people around you to a music source to be enjoyed by the entire group. The FM Radio reception is excellent and I'm putting on all my favourite music on a Mini SD CARD to be played on Music Angel. Thanks, Joe., Wasaga Beach

Although we are a four seasons resort town with a lot of activities to keep folks busy and happy year ‘round, I think all of us love and look forward to the warm summer months. With the amazing warmer summer like temperatures that we have experienced over the last couple of weeks, it was great to see the smiles and happy comments about the weather from all who were eager to put on shorts and a t-shirt so early in the year. Prior to the first day of spring, our record breaking heat wave brought many to our beach to enjoy a splash in the cold waters of Georgian Bay and to soak up some rays on the sand that was covered in ice and snow just a few weeks earlier. Temperature records continued to be broken as we entered into spring officially and people seemed eager to do yard work around their properties that has usually been done in May and cold drinks were enjoyed on sunny beach front decks. It was fun to watch the flurry of

activity around cottage courts and seasonal businesses as all seemed to want to help Mother Nature along with her amazing gift of the premature warmth in Wasaga Beach. The snow fence along the Main Beach came down as town employees enjoyed the sun and temps in the high 20’s while convertibles and motor cycles made the traditional cruise around... and around Beach Drive. Although more seasonal weather is now upon us, the early taste of spring and summer has been a great inspiration for a town that was born as a result of our Nottawasaga River and of course the most beautiful fresh water beach in the world! As a true Beach BOOSTER, I would like to wish all in Wasaga Beach a happy, healthy and prosperous spring season... leading into what promises to be a great summer season in The Beach. The Beach is BACK in 2012! Glengarry Landing

Located just south of Edenvale in Simcoe County on the east bank of Nottawasaga river is Glengarry Landing. This National Historic site of Canada was occupied by the Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles during the war of 1812. The site consists of a semi-rural landscape and encompasses cleared fields and pasture. In present time, the site has been divided into several lots, with the addition of access roads and several different structures.

In 1923, Glengarry Landing was designated as a national historic site. This designation was based on an event that took place at the forks of the Nottawasaga River. The Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles led by Lieutenant-Colonel Robert McDouall, spent two months building a flotilla of boats to move supplies and troops across Lake Huron to Fort Michilimackinac. In July 1814, McDouall divided his garrison and sent a party to Wisconsin. Under the leadership of Brevet Major William McKay they successfully recaptured the Prairie du Chien on the Mississippi River..

The Devil And The Golfer

A golfer is in a competitive match with a friend, who is ahead by a couple of strokes. The golfer says to himself, "I'd give anything to sink this next putt."

A stranger walks up to him and whispers, "Would you give up a fourth of your sex life"

The golfer thinks the man is crazy and that his answer will be meaningless but also that perhaps this is a good omen and will put him in the right frame of mind to make the difficult putt and says, "OK." And sinks the putt.

Two holes later he mumbles to himself, "Boy, if I could only get an eagle on this hole."

The same stranger moves to his side and says, "Would it be worth another fourth of your sex life"

The golfer shrugs and says, "Sure." And he makes an eagle.

Down to the final hole. The golfer needs yet another eagle to win. Though he says nothing, the stranger moves to his side and says, "Would you be willing to give up the rest of your sex life to win this match"

The golfer says, "Certainly." And makes the eagle.

As the golfer walks to the club house, the stranger walks alongside and says,"You know, I've really not been fair with you because you don't know who I am. I'm the devil and from now on you will have no sex life."

"Nice to meet you," says the golfer. "My name's Father O'Malley."705-429-2791

The Dance Halls of Tiny Township

Following an early taste of summer the Explorer delved into an article by Bonnie Reynolds on the dance halls of Tiny Township. There was a time when the 24th of May was the traditional opening date for Ontario's hundreds of dance halls. Beginning in the 1930s, big band music dominated the pavilions around Georgian Bay. Usually, they were local ensembles such as the Johnstone family band from Midland.

Like other Ontario municipalities, Tiny Township had several dance halls over the decades of its history. One of the earliest was a white wooden building just to the west of the arcade on Balm Beach. Built in the 1930s, it had window shutters that could be propped open to let cool breezes blow in on fevered dancers. Admission was twenty five cents and the music was reported to be loud and often off-key.

When Balm Beach's first dance hall burned down, a common occurrence with these flimsy wooden buildings, a new one was built. Named the Chateau Gai, it was a family pavilion run by Norm Wahl who allowed no drinking in his establishment. The Chateau Gai house band was known as the Georgian Swingers and included many members of the very musical Beauchamp family. The Chateau Gai kept its doors open well into the 1950s.

Herb Beauchamp's love of music led to the opening of the Wagon Wheel dance pavilion, later to become known as the Barrel Works. Dances were held at the Wagon Wheel during the summer months until the building was destroyed by fire in 1956. Though it was replaced by a cement block structure, the popularity of dancing began to decline. Herb Beauchamp, who later became the mayor of Midland, sold his dance hall.

Build it and they will come….the “sticky” message I mean.

We as individual residents of Wasaga Beach have more power than we realize to promote our famous town. If we were all raving fans of Wasaga Beach communicating one solid, audacious “sticky” message about the beach on social media that would make people want to visit and live here we could virtually create a far reaching buzz in the proportions of a social epidemic. If you are curious and fascinated with how little things can make a difference check out Malcolm Gladwell's book called “The Tipping Point” to understand how a sticky message can go viral in today's social media world. One good example of a sticky message is Wendy's “Where's the beef?” This, my friends would create the conditions to accelerate development in our town. What would be left to do would be to harness that growth in a responsible way to improve the economic situation and assure the social and environmental requirements of the community are protected. It's increasing visitor numbers and new resident growth that creates the business case for development and additional services. It's people that build strong vibrant communities, not companies, not developers. I'm not sure but maybe the “sticky” message is our current mantra “The beach is just the beginning” and we flood the incredible number of social media sites out there with our sticky message and how the beach lead to greater things for ourselves personally. This could cause a buzz that no advertising or communications plan could ever rival. You may want to include beach pictures with that message. We can help you with that. If there was a need we could add a picture repository onto the Beach Booster website where people could access pictures to send to friends, family and contacts along with their “sticky” message. So I'm open to what “sticky” message or tagline suggestions work for Wasaga Beach. Let me know what you come up with. What do you think of creating a Beach Booster website repository of great pictures of Wasaga Beach, its attractions and its residents for anyone to supply pictures to or access pictures and use?You can contact me at [email protected].

As someone who has always had a keen interest in Wasaga Beach’s past, I am very proud to be a part of The Town’s Heritage Advisory Committee. This committee was created by Town Council and consists of others who are eager to learn more about our history, The Town’s roots, its people and buildings. Our aim is to be able to share the interesting stories of how our town was created and grew through the years and hopefully generate interest in preserving some of these memoires and stories. Personally, I believe that knowing where we have been and how we developed, helps with us moving forward into the future! The Heritage Advisory Committee has often discussed the Cook Farm, the small farm house that still stands along the shore of the Nottawasga River on Klondike Park Road. This little brick home was once used as the Wasaga Snowmobile Club’s Clubhouse and is located on the edge of The Wasaga Beach Sports Park. Members of the committee decided to try and find out more about this little brick building, one of the very few farm buildings left within the town’s limits.Bonnie Cooper, of our committee was diligent in asking questions and researching this task was pleased to find that someone who grew up in the Cook Farm house was currently living in Stayner!Lillian Hiltz (nee Cook) was contacted. Bonnie and Connie Grey, chair of the committee set up a visit. Bonnie and Connie were thrilled in having the opportunity to meet with Lillian, 91 years young, who shared fascinating stories about her family, the farm and growing up in that little brick house on Klondike Park Road.Although Lillian’s Mom and Dad, Rita and Lewis Cook purchased the home in 1925, the building was built by Mr. Hiram Wilson from Crow's Corner (a hamlet at Sunnidale Road and the 12th) in 1890.Prior to purchasing the home, Lewis Cook, a veteran of The Great War, resided in Wasaga Beach and earned a living clearing lots and moving sand with his wagon and team of horses. Lewis married Rita in 1919 and after a brief time spent in the Sault St. Marie area, he and Rita moved back to The Beach and eventually into the Cook Farm in 1925. Originally growing oats and hay, in the early 30’s, Lewis switched from crops to Dairy Farming. He named his homestead Hillside Dairy and became the major supplier of fresh milk to the few residents of the Village of Wasaga Beach, the many summer cottagers and the businesses catering to the many coming to enjoy our wonderful beach. Milk production was made possible with the cutting of Winter ice from the Nottawasaga River and storing it in the farm’s ice house to cool the milk through the warm Summer months. The Cook family drove a late 20’s model Chevrolet to deliver fresh milk throughout The Beach.Lillian and her sister Ethel often made the deliveries in The Beach, in Winter and Summer. To better serve the many summer visitors and cottagers, Lillian would pick up fresh baked bread at Wood’s Bakery in Stayner and deliver it with the fresh milk. Sometime in the mid 30’s pasteurized milk was mandated, so milk from Hillside Dairy was first sent to Bessie Dairy in Stayner for pasteurization and then delivered to The Beach. After Lewis Cook’s death in 1974, Rita sold the Cook Farm to the Ministry of Natural Resources and later the property would be purchased by The Town of Wasaga Beach as part of the Wasaga Beach Sports Park.Lillian also had 2 brothers, Ray and Leon who grew up at the Cook Farm. Lillian’s Grandfather (Lewis's Dad) was the first Ontario Provincial Police Constable in the Village of Wasaga Beach.I thank Lillian for originally offering this interesting story to Bonnie and Connie, then attending one of our meetings with more great stories. Lillian took the time to lend me some of the pictures included here and helped me with this story of the little brick house on Klondike Park Road. For more information on the Wasaga Beach Heritage Advisory Committee, contact< [email protected]>
