Please remember that Art staff are available to help after school throughout this project and Homework club is available to all students. The project work needs to be completed on paper (available from your Art teachers) and when submitted held together with a paperclip.

We will post notifications for Year 7 on Show My Homework to act as reminders for students to help you organise your time.

Homework Task 1: You need to create a 10-bullet point fact file on Giorgio Morandi and his work. (25mins)

e.g. Where he lived, his background, his family and other information.

Homework Tasks 2 and 3: Create a front cover for this project on A4 paper. (50mins)

You need to use your research into Giorgio Morandi and his artwork in order for you to create a front cover that includes the words Giorgio Morandi.

You need to consider size and style of the lettering

You need to consider how to add colour and decoration around the word. You could create a border pattern

You should draw and find images of Morandi’s work to place around the word

Homework Task 4. You are an Art Critic (someone who writes about art) (25mins)

Write an article (this could be like a blog) about Giorgio Morandi’s work pretending you have met him and seen his work in real life. What questions would you ask the artist if you had the chance and how would he answer the questions? (This is where you show your understanding about Morandi and his work) e.g. How do you rate his artwork?

Your dialogue with Morandi could start…

shapes and how you can create unusual………to be continued

You must answer the questions you ask Morandi to demonstrate your understanding of his work.

Homework Tasks 5-7: Draw a composition of objects you have found at home inspired by the work of Morandi. (50mins) Collect a piece of cartridge from your art teacher to complete the work on.

Create a drawing on A4 paper of two objects such as a bottle, jar, vase or cup in pencil. You should create a line of symmetry down the vertical centre of the page to guide you and place your object inside a cylinder or rectangle to start with. Look at the images below to help you.

Then you should draw the top as an ellipse and make sure that the sides are equal, and the base is curved.

Finally use tonal shading like we have learnt in class to make your objects look 3D.

Drawing a bottle or jar using pencil to create tone.

GIORGIO MORANDI (1890-1964) Italian

Morandi deliberately limited his choice of still life objects to the unremarkable bottles,

boxes, jars, jugs and vases that were commonly found in his everyday domestic

environment. He would then remove their labels and paint them with a flat matt colour to

get rid of any lettering or reflections. In this condition they provided him with an

anonymous cast of ready-made forms that he could arrange and rearrange to create his

compositions. He shone a light on the functional object we use everyday that are often

overlooked and taken for granted.

Today, we were bombarded with images from print and multimedia and are accustomed to

absorbing them at breakneck speed. To slow down and focus on one image for a length of

time is against our conditioning, but this is precisely what Morandi does in his painting and

what he expects from his audience.

Morandi painted his objects to have a weighty, chunky appearance. They seem solid and

sturdy. He painted with a muted colour palette, often working in a range of whites and greys

and blues. He was not concerned with hiding the brushstrokes to create a smooth

appearance.

• Giorgio Morandi was nicknamed 'il monaco' (the monk) due to his reclusive lifestyle.

• Morandi was was one of the greatest Italian still life painters in the 20th century.

• Still life painting is called 'Natura Morta' in Italy.

• Morandi's still-life paintings had many influences spanning seven centuries from the Early

Renaissance to the 20th century.

• Morandi contemplated his still life compositions for a long time before he painted them,

sometimes he would spend weeks moving the objects around to get just the right

placement.

• Morandi tried to communicate a sense of tranquility in his art.
