Hello there! Congratulations on making it to Warwick. We have one of the biggest and best SUs in the country, and we work for you in so many different areas. With loads of great club nights, music and bars on offer here on campus, there’s bound to be something that takes your fancy – but we are so much more than just a bar!

We have over 300 sports clubs and societies that are run through us – whether you’re a pro or an absolute beginner, these are one of the best ways to meet new people, have fun and get involved to the fullest.

We are also here to support you throughout your studies. We have officers who are here to develop education and welfare provision, democratic structures to represent your voice, and an independent welfare and advice centre which is completely free and confidential.

If you have any questions, my door is always open, so come and see me in SUHQ for a chat!

Ben SundellWARWICK SU [email protected]

RUN BY STUDENTS, FOR STUDENTSWarwick SU is a democratically-run membership organisation, with every student automatically becoming a member upon enrolling at Warwick.

YOUR VOICEWe are the independent voice of students at Warwick University – although the SU receives an annual grant from the University and works closely with it, we are not a part of its formal structure, and are thus able to represent your views at a local, regional and national level.

Each year, the student body elects seven student officers, all of whom take a year out from their studies to preside over the Union as your representatives. These Sabbatical Officers – or ‘Sabbs’, as you’ll commonly hear them referred to - work alongside our dedicated staff team to deliver a wealth of services for you!

YOUR SABBATICAL OFFICER TEAM 2013-14This year’s Sabbatical Team, elected in February 2013, is as follows:

BEN SUNDELL Warwick SU President

ERIN DAVIESEducation Officer

COSMO MARCHDemocracy & Development Officer

LUCY GILLPostgraduate Officer

CAT TURHANWelfare & Campaigns Officer

ANT SCOTTSocieties Officer

ZOE BUCKLANDSports Officer

Over the coming pages, we’ll be giving you an overview of our various different activities, as well as introducing you to your Sabbatical Officers!

WHERE YOUR MONEY GOESWarwick SU is a charity and a not-for-profit organisation. Unlike commercial high-street venues, we do not exist to make a profit - the money we bring in through our commercial outlets (bars, restaurants, cafés and nightclubs) is directly reinvested back into other services for Warwick students, including our Clubs & Societies, Advice & Welfare services, Campaigns, Democracy and more.

As a registered charity, it directly benefits you to use our services - every time you buy an event ticket for The Copper Rooms, a baguette in The Bread Oven, a pint in The Dirty Duck, a meal in Xananas or a cup of coffee in Curiositea, that money goes right back into the pot to fund student activities. Put simply, without your support and loyalty, we wouldn’t exist!

Here’s a rough breakdown of where your money goes when you use any of the SU’s commercial services:

As a Students’ Union, our primary purpose is to represent, advise and support our members. However, as you would expect, the staffing, time and resources required to deliver this come at a cost.

Although the SU receives an annual grant from the University and works closely with it, this funding on its own is insufficient to sustain the day-to-day running of the SU. Consequently, we run a variety of commercial services to bridge this gap and help support our non-commercial membership services.

How the Union works diagram

The Union’s total turnover is approximately £6.9 million.

The surplus it makes at the end of the year is less than 1.5%.

Every time you buy a baguette from The Bread Oven or grab another pint in The Dirty Duck, you can be assured that the money will go straight back into student services that will benefit you – that’s because Warwick SU is a not-for-profit organisation.

In addition to running the Union’s democratic processes, part of my job as your Democracy and Development Officer is to oversee the Union’s £6.9 million turnover. That means ensuring that the Union’s spending is solely geared towards benefiting students. It also includes making sure that the Union’s outlets (Xananas, The Dirty Duck, The Terrace Bar, Curiositea, The Copper Rooms and The Bread Oven) are delivering the services that you want at a price students agree with.

However big or small your ideas are - whether it’s inventing a cocktail for The Terrace Bar or suggesting a new concept for a night out - it’s your Union, and we want to hear your opinions. So email [email protected] or just pop in to see me if you have any suggestions!

Warwick Students’ Union is a charitable membership organisation which exists to represent the views and interests of all students at Warwick University.

We also run significant commercial services whose surpluses are used to subsidise welfare, representational and developmental activities for our members.

The Trustees of Warwick SU are fundamental to the success of the charity and are responsible for its financial sustainability and strategic direction.

We are looking for one additional volunteer Student trustee who can commit 4 to 6 hours per month, largely in early evenings.

To be a Student Trustee, you MUST be a student at Warwick University, be over 18 years old when you take up appointment and have no unspent criminal onvictions.

We would really like to maintain a wide variety of experiences and skills on our Trustee Board and welcome applications from all students in any of the demographic groups that make up the student body here at Warwick.

WE ARE PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN HEARING FROM INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, NON-UG STUDENTS AND STUDENTS FROM BLACK AND ETHNIC MINORITY GROUPS.

You can also visit the Charities Commission website which contains good advice and guidance on being a Trustee: www.charity-commission.gov.uk

If you are interested, please send a CV and covering letter detailing why you would like to be a trustee at WARWICK STUDENTS’ UNION to [email protected]

If you think you would be interested in applying to be a student trustee, email [email protected] for further information or visit the website at www.warwicksu.com/trustees

COUNSELLINGWarwick runs an invaluable and confidential counselling service, together with a faith-based alternative (if you feel this option is more appropriate).

The University Counselling Service provides an opportunity for all Warwick students to access professional counselling so that they not only feel emotionally healthy, but also fulfil their personal, academic and professional potential.

DISABILITY SERVICES Disability Services work to help address barriers to study for students with hearing and visual impairments, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, mobility impairments, dysgraphia, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, ‘unseen’ disabilities such as asthma, epilepsy and diabetes, plus any other conditions.

Find out more at go.warwick.ac.uk/disability.

There are lots of problems that you could (but hopefully won’t!) face during your time at University. It could be your course, housing, study visas, financial issues, personal worries or anything inbetween. Luckily, the Student Advice Centre is here to help! Campus’s very own Citizens’ Advice Bureau, we run a free, confidential and informal service to support your life at University.

We are based on the top floor of SUHQ and receive over 6000 enquiries a year. Our three fully-trained advisors can help with issues relating to housing, immigration, money, study, consumer rights and much more. They will do all they can to ensure you make an informed decision about any difficulties you might face – and, if we can’t help, we will direct you to someone who can.

During term-time, student volunteers run our reception desk. They will welcome you and help book appointments - however, it will save you time to either phone ahead or e-mail. If you’re facing a problem and don’t know who to speak to, try us!

HOUSINGIt should be an exciting moment in your first year: the opportunity to move out of halls and in with your new friends. However, myths and misinformation surrounding off-campus accommodation mean that students often feel pressured into signing a contract. We are here to make sure you feel happy with your housing by running a campaign each year in Term 1 to let you know your options. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the rights of students as tenants, to give you more information about the area you’re moving into and to let you know that there is no need to rush!

We also advise students on how to find housemates, and what the house-hunting timeline should look like. We offer support and information from Term 1.

Love Community addresses Warwick’s relationship with our local community. We want you to be safe, have a great time living off-campus and have a positive and happy experience in the local area.

Love Community is about doing what we can to respect the area we are living in and the people around us. It also provides better opportunities to get involved in making it a better place.

The campaign encompasses all of the information in our Off-Campus Moving-In Guide, the possibility of social action projects, and continues the Leave Leam Tidy/Keep Cov Clean initiatives. These aim to ensure that at the end of the academic year students leave their houses and flats in good condition, useful or reusable possessions get reused or recycled and we leave our local area in a decent state.

Nightline is an independent, confidential and non-judgmental listening service. This means you can call, email or drop by for any reason at all and we won’t judge you or tell you what to do. We are simply here to listen.

Hello! I’m Cat, and I’m your Welfare & Campaigns officer this year. I am responsible for looking after the Welfare Services in the Students’ Union and lobbying for the best possible care from the University.

Student life is often lots of fun, but it isn’t always easy. I will be here to offer support if things don’t go to plan - I can assist you with problems with your accommodation, develop- ing a positive relationship with your community and can also advise you on issues surrounding sexual and mental health, immigration and student safety.

A really exciting part of my job is facilitating student activism. If you have an idea for a new cause or want to be involved in activism at Warwick, I can help get you started or point you in the right direction.

I have a welcoming office with lots of tea, so please come and let me know how I can be of help to you!

Last year, the SU’s Hungry for Feedback campaign helped to bring about a 4-week turnaround on the feedback you receive on your academic work.

This year, we want to use the campaign to ensure that the feedback you’re getting is of a high quality – keep a lookout for more on this later in the year. We’re particularly keen to get examples of your worst, and your best, pieces of feedback – feel free to email us via [email protected] with examples of what you think makes feedback ‘good’.

Warwick SU loves to get involved in the wider community. One of the ways we do this is through our Inspire scheme, in which dozens of students head out to a number of schools in the local area and tell the pupils all about their University experiences.

This is a great way to give something back while potentially inspiring a new generation of students who may not have previously considered going to University.

The scheme runs all year long and we’re always looking for new volunteers - be on the lookout for information on how to apply, or drop the Education Officer an email via [email protected].

One of the primary purposes of Warwick SU is to represent you. Whether it’s to your academic department, to the University, the local council or nationally, we’re a great place to get support and help. This is most obvious when it comes to academic issues such as appeals and complaints, but can also cover anything from housing issues to healthcare. Remember that our collective voice is much stronger than a lone one!

The Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) system is paramount to academic representation here in the Union: these are committees made up of students and staff which discuss specific departmental issues, and are your first port-of-call in making your opinions known.

If you fancy getting involved and becoming an SSLC Rep, you’ll get the chance at the start of Term 1 when the SU runs its Autumn Elections. This is a great opportunity to really influence and shape your degree experience - for more info, head to: www.warwicksu.com/sslc

Once a term, we bring together SSLC Reps and anyone else who’s interested to discuss ideas surrounding Higher Education and make plans to solve cross-departmental issues. We also get a panel of senior University representatives to come along and be quizzed by students directly.

There will be breakaway groups throughout, some providing the opportunity to debate the issues and others offering training courses. These are a great opportunity and more information will appear on the SU homepage nearer the time, so be sure to keep a keen eye on it!

Hi! I’m Erin, and I’m your Education Officer for the next year. I am your voice on all things academic-related at the University.

With the recent increase in fees, University is getting very expensive and I know that you want value for money. For this to happen, you’ll need to get involved with your academic representation by letting them know what works and what needs improvement. Student-Staff Liaison Committees (SSLCs) offer you the chance to have your say on all aspects of your degree course, while the Education Convention will place you at the heart of the debate on education in Britain today.

I’m also here to deal with any individual issues you may have, so don’t be afraid to come and talk to me. You can send me an email or drop into my office – I’m always happy to have a chat and a cuppa!

Every Students’ Union in the country is run directly by its members. Each year, the student body elects 7 students as their representatives who work full-time ensuring that the Students’ Union is run and directed by its members. But they aren’t the only students who have a say in how the SU is run – any student can be involved, and every student has an equal voice.

If every student acted independently, the system would be highly inefficient and there would be a lot of mixed messages. Therefore, different groups of students are able to elect their own representatives to sit on a decision-making body known as Student Council. If a student wants to enact change or raise an issue, they can do so through the support of their elected Councillors. There are two different types of change, which in turn can be brought about by two key decision-making bodies:

[email protected] 024 7657 2788 Level 2, SUHQ

warwicksu.com/democracy

: How does it work?

We use Union Policy to lobby external organisations (the University, government, local businesses). Policy represents the ‘collective voice’ of the student body on big issues (like our stance on free education). Since these Union policies represent the student voice, they must be voted upon by students at an All Student Meeting to be passed.

Union Regulations & Principles are essentially the rules governing how the Union operates on a day-to-day basis (for example, what we sell, when we open, how we support students). Whereas Union Policy mandates the Union to campaign on an issue, Regulations & Principles are not able to do this and are purely operational.

After decisions have been made, it’s up to Student Council to make sure things happen. Policies and Regulations & Principles mandate an Officer to do something or change the way the Union operates, and it’s Student Council’s job to ensure this occurs. They hold Officers to account. Unlike with Policy, Student Council can amend Regulations & Principles on your behalf.

Once a term we hold an All Student Meeting. Any student can attend these meetings, raise issues and debate the Union’s priorities in the form of Union Policy. Students hold campus-wide campaigns in favour of, or against, a motion put to an All Student Meeting. After the meeting, any student can vote online and a decision is made. This is where Policy is set.

Run to be an OfficerEach year, students run to hold Officer positions in the Union. Any student can stand to be an Officer (if they are within the group they’d be representing) and any student can vote in the elections. Officers are all current or former students, and are here to represent you and your interests. Past Officers have done amazing things for students, so it’s really important that the right people are elected! Officer Elections are held in Term 2. There are three types of Officers:

Sabbatical Officers

Faculty Representatives

Liberation Officers

For more info about this year’s Officer Team, visit warwicksu.com/officers.

Vote!Voting takes just seconds and is all done online. It’s really important that your voice is heard, whether that’s in an election or through voting at an All Student Meeting.Warwick SU has the genuine ability to improve your time here at Warwick, but only if you help us to make a difference!

Run to be on Student CouncilAs a Councillor, you represent a large cohort of students who rely on you. It is your responsibility to ensure their voice is heard, as well as holding Union Officers to account and ensuring they direct the Union appropriately. Elections for Student Council take place early in Term 1.

The issue…Imagine you are a second-year student. After a year at Warwick, you have noticed there aren’t enough water fountains across campus and you and your classmates often have no choice but to buy bottled water.

Speak to your Representatives…You get in touch with the Second-Year Councillors through the Students’ Union website. They agree and inform you that they will bring this up at Student Council.

Raised at Student Council…The Second-Year Councillors raise the issue at the next meeting. Other Councillors and Officers agree that there is a lack of fountains. The Welfare & Campaigns Officer agrees to speak to the University about this issue. This task is added to the Action List, meaning the Welfare & Campaigns Officer must report their progress back at the next meeting.

Officer meets with the University…Students’ Union Welfare and Campaigns Officer meets with the Director of Campus Services to discuss the issue. The Director informs the Officer that there simply isn’t enough money in the budget to install these additional fountains.

Creating Union Policy…At the next Student Council, the Welfare & Campaigns Officer explains that they were unsuccessful. Instead, the Officer brings a motion forward to make it Union Policy that students want more water fountains. Student Council agrees and the motion is sent to the next All Student Meeting.

Using our ‘collective voice’…Since a Policy represents the voice of all students, it must be voted upon by all students. Several days are given to debate, discuss and vote on the issue. The results are announced and the motion passes. The Students’ Union launches a small campaign on the website and social media explaining the need for more fountains on campus. The Welfare & Campaigns Officer goes back to the Director of Campus Services - together with the pressure of an online campaign and the fact that all students have voted on this issue, the University has no choice but to reallocate funds to provide more water for students.

This is an example of Democracy in action and how any student can use the system to bring about change!

NUSThe NUS is an organisation made up of SUs from across the UK. Being part of the NUS provides Warwick with resources and support throughout the year, along with national campaigns for students on fees, funding, housing, social welfare and more. Furthermore, anyone can run to be an NUS delegate at one of their conferences.

POSTGRADUATE REPRESENTATIONDemocracy is at the heart of the Union and whether you want to make a difference to your Union, the University or at a national level, our representative structures are here to help you effect change. There are lots of ways in which the Union can help you to get your voice heard.

Each Faculty has its own Postgraduate Representative who will sit on University committees and provide a student perspective on academic issues.

We also have 6 Postgraduate Councillors who represent postgrad interests on Student Council, which debates a wide variety of issues relating to students.

Each course also has an SSLC (Student-Staff Liaison Committee), which provides a forum for students, staff and senior academics to discuss concerns at specific course and University levels. These committees give you the chance to have a direct say in how your department is run. Elections are organised at a departmental level, so watch out for more information during your induction if you’d like to get involved!

If you want to find out more about Union Democracy, how the Union is run or how you can run in the Autumn Elections, head over to warwicksu.com/democracy or email your Democracy and Development Officer via [email protected]

The PGA is a representative body specifically for Postgrads that meets regularly to discuss concerns on issues such as postgraduate funding and support for Postgrads who teach. The PGA is a fully elected body, and can send representatives to Student Council to represent the opinions of the postgrad community. It will also provide support for any academic issues you may have and can lead on postgrad campaigns. The PGA meets regularly through the year – keep an eye on warwicksu.com/postgrad for details about our meetings and how to get involved!

POSTGRADUATE HUBThe Postgraduate Hub, situated in Senate House next to the Arts Centre, is a study space designed especially for Postgraduates. As well as providing spaces for individual and collaborative study, the Hub also hosts regular events and social activities where you can meet fellow Postgrads. They also offer academic support services such as the Dissertation Station and funding mentoring scheme. You can keep up to date with what’s going on at the Hub via their website or by following their Twitter account. @WarwickPgHub

It can often be forgotten in amongst the rush of feverish Undergraduate activity that Postgraduate students make up nearly 50% of the student body here at Warwick. Upon enrolling, Postgraduates automatically become members of the Students’ Union, and we are here to represent your needs and interests just as passionately as we do any other group.

Each year, students elect a Postgraduate Officer to the Sabbatical Team. Their role is to address concerns about all aspects of postgraduate life and study here at the University – if you have any comments or suggestions as to how we can improve the Warwick experience for you and your fellow Postgrads, feel free to get in touch!

COMMUNITY & EVENTSUndertaking postgraduate study can be a hectic experience, but taking a break from your work is important too.

If you’re looking to meet other postgrads and get involved in Warwick’s vibrant student community but our traditional club nights in The Copper Rooms aren’t for you, then we’ve still got plenty to offer:

Whether you fancy the Pub Quiz, performing at Un-Plucked, our weekly acoustic night in The Dirty Duck, or a laid-back evening at Saturday Session in The Terrace Bar, we host various events with a more relaxed vibe.

Societies are a great way to meet new people and try new activities, and we’ve got over 240 for you to choose from. If you don’t have the time to commit to joining a society, be sure to keep an eye out for the wide range of events our societies run - from the annual Real Ale Festival to Warwick Student Arts Festival and the international feel of Go Global’s fortnightly events, there’s plenty to keep you busy outside of working hours.

We also host regular REx Fest events in partnership with the Wolfson Research Exchange. An open-mic night run exclusively by and for Postgrads and held outside of Undergrad term times, REx Fest is a great chance to perform in front of a postgrad-only crowd and enjoy a relaxed night of music and socialising.

Remember to keep an eye on the website at warwicksu.com/postgrads for more information about events and socials.

If you’ve got an idea for an event or any suggestions as to how we can improve, please get in touch by popping into SUHQ or emailing [email protected]!

SOCIETIES FAIR The Societies Fair happens during Week 1 at the start of the year, and is spread over two days.

Each society will have a stall at the fair. You can chat to the people running the society and get a taste of what each of them involves.

Make sure you join your Hall Society for free (e.g. Jack Martin Society if you are living in Jack Martin), as these are a great way to get to know people living in your halls who aren’t sharing your kitchen. Hall societies raise money for charity, run trips, organise socials and often enter our sports leagues. If you’re feeling really eager to get involved and fancy running your Hall Society this year, elections will be taking place towards the start of term.

When you find societies you like, you can grab a barcode from them and buy your memberships there and then.

Alternatively, you can join at any time online at www.warwicksu.com/societies.

SOCIETIES AWARDSSocieties make such a valuable contribution to student life that we hold an awards ceremony in Term 3 to honour their achievements. We also single out several individuals for special recognition and pay tribute to their outstanding input into society activities.

All the award-winners from the 2012-2013 academic year are marked in this directory.

SO - WHAT DO SOCIETIES DO, EXACTLY?Our societies cover just about every area of interest or activity you could imagine. If there isn’t a society for something you’re interested in, you’re more than welcome to get a few people together and start one up!

Joining a society is a great way to try something completely new, make new friends or simply have a lot of fun. There are also opportunities to run societies, which will get you dealing with budgets, organising trips and picking up skills that you won’t get from just doing your degree.

HOW DO I JOIN? Join the Societies Federation via the Societies tab on the SU website. It’s only £14 for one year’s membership and, once paid, you can join any societies you like. This money goes straight back to societies in the budget, helping to fund all the wild and wonderful events that they put on, as well as funding SU services that societies need to support them.

Societies usually charge around £3 for membership - an absolute bargain considering the amazing experiences you’ll have all year! Even better, many of our societies are free to join.

You can join any of the societies online at www.warwicksu.com/societies or at the Societies Fair.

From Warwick Student Cinema to the Good Food Society, there really is something for everyone here at Warwick SU. Societies bring together students who are interested in or care about a certain issue or activity, or simply want to try something new. The Union supports these societies by providing funding, training and facilities for their activities - we have more societies than any other Students’ Union in the country, so you’ve made the right choice by coming to Warwick!

To see what we can offer you, visit www.warwicksu.com/societies or check out the directory at the back of this guide.

Hey, I’m Ant and I’m your Societies Officer for 2013-14! Whether you want to climb a mountain for charity, volunteer in the local community, host your own radio show, perform on stage, learn a new skill, make new friends or simply boost your CV, joining societies will give you the opportunity to do all this and more!

Running a society can be a tough job, so a huge part of my time will be given to supporting the amazing students who run the activities that’ll be so meaningful to your University experience. Alongside that I’ll also be working hard to campaign on changes within the SU, University and wider community to ensure that the extra-curricular interests of students are well-represented.

Make sure you come along to Socs Fair at the start of term to see the full range of societies that we have to offer, and get involved with as much as you can – you won’t be disappointed!

WARWICK ACTIVEWarwick Active is a brand new programme available to all Warwick Sport members. It offers a broad range of opportunities, from Hall Sports (where you can represent your hall in various sports each week) to intramural leagues and even short coaching courses in golf, self-defence and many more. Warwick Active provides a great way to socialise, boost confidence and meet new people, as well as get fit and active!

There are also many events throughout the year to get involved in such as the Zombie Run, UV Sports and various tournaments. These are predominantly run by our Activators, who are constantly leading and shaping our Warwick Active Programme. If you would like to become an Activator, please email Jen via [email protected].

FOCUS TEAMSFocus Teams are selected by Warwick Sport to receive extra assistance as a result of excellent performances in recent years. 11 teams were selected for the 2013-14 Focus Team Programme, where they’ll benefit from a mentoring scheme, fitness classes, top coaches, strength and conditioning training sessions with the fitness suite staff and nutrition and psychology sessions with experts.

These 11 teams are: Women’s Netball, Men’s Cricket, Women’s Football, Men’s Rugby Union, Men’s Squash, Swimming, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Tennis, Judo, Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Lacrosse.

WHAT IS WARWICK SPORT?Warwick Sport is a partnership between the Students’ Union and the University which oversees all sport on campus.

The key idea behind the collaboration is to increase opportunities for every University member to engage in sport at whatever level suits them. It also means sport at Warwick is much more cost-effective.

A small membership fee of only £55 to join Warwick Sport for the entire year gives you unlimited access to a vast range of sports facilities. This includes halls, courts, tracks and the swimming pool, plus sports insurance, subsidised coaching, umpiring, first aid courses and even a free sports physiotherapy consultation, as well as the ability to join as many of our 72 sports clubs as you wish for only £6 each!

SPORTS FIXTURESLike most UK Universities, Wednesday afternoon is set aside for sport at Warwick. Almost every single course keeps this time free from academic activity so that you are able to go and represent Warwick across the country at any sport imaginable! Warwick has a strong reputation across all the BUCS (British Universities & College Sports) leagues, and it’s only getting stronger.

Don’t worry if you haven’t reached national standards yet and just want a run-about! Every club offers beginners’ courses and are open to all abilities, while our active programme always has something to offer!

The University of Warwick offers a huge variety of sporting opportunities - with exceptional facilities all over campus, there’s sure to be something that takes your fancy! With such a range of choice, Warwick enables both experienced athletes to compete at International level and complete beginners to learn from scratch. We have seen novices start a new sport at Warwick and become coaches, black-belts and national-level competitors during their time here! But our clubs are not just about playing sport – each club has its own character and active social scene where you’ll really feel part of a friendly community.

SOCIETY CAMPAIGNSMuch of the campaigning here at Warwick comes through the great work that our societies do. Societies campaign on a huge range of different issues such as the environment, ethics and social justice, personal wellbeing, or liberation. You will see societies running themed weeks and events at certain points throughout the year.

If there is an issue that is important to you that you think one of our campaigning societies should be focusing on, get in touch and let them know or consider joining and getting a new campaign going.

You can also get advice from staff in the Student Resources Room in SUHQ, who can put you in touch with existing campaigns.

For the full list of campaigning societies that you can get involved with, check out warwicksu.com/societies/campaigning

Fundraising is conducted through RAG – for the latest totals, visit warwicksu.com/rag

We know how enthusiastic our members are to get involved with meaningful and vital campaigning work, and we wanted to make it easier for both seasoned campaigners and students who are just starting out in this exciting and often life-changing activity to come together.

The Campaigns Convention is an exciting development for us and takes place each term. It enables coordination between the various campaigning societies, liberation groups and campaigns the Union runs throughout the year.

We provide training and support to help ensure all our campaigning is effective. It is a great place to exchange ideas and to get involved in the areas you feel passionate about.

Warwick Student Arts Festival (WSAF) takes place across campus in the final week of the academic year, and showcases all the amazing talent and skills which our students possess. Highlights each year range from concerts and dance performances to theatre and community projects! www.wsaf.co.uk

Billed as one of the most bizarre weeks in the campus calendar, RAG Week descends in Term 1. Various items can be delivered to lectures (including chocolates, pints or even a single red rose), giant animals appear round campus and a whole plethora of events grace the evenings at the Union. There’s even time for some mischief. ‘Gnomings’ (involving a target being cling-filmed to a tree and covered in flour, water and baked beans) offer some cheeky opportunities for revenge - perfect for that flatmate who hasn’t been doing their share of the washing-up.

The best bit? The whole thing’s for charity!

www.warwicksu.com/rag

One of the largest student- run international festivals in the UK, OWW is a vivid explosion of colour and energy which celebrates the incredible diversity of students at Warwick.

Stimulating personal development and inspiring

an ethos based on acceptance & appreciation of the world’s cultures, One World Week is comprised of various elements: the Forums attract high-profile speakers and stimulate debate on key topics facing the world today; the Festival takes place in and around the Union building and features activities and performances; the Arts bring every creative element in the world to campus, while Sports gets students of all nationalities together to enjoy competitions and new activities.

Warwick Entrepreneurs exists to develop future entrepreneurs by encouraging a culture of innovation and collaboration. This year will see the return of ‘The Apprentice’ challenge and the new Incubator, which aims to support students throughout the process of taking their ideas to successful businesses. Membership is open to all at Warwick.

There’s always something exciting going on at Warwick SU, as any stroll through the Union will show you. Every week you’ll find society performances in the Atrium and Piazza, be able to get bargains at our regular indoor markets and find freebies being handed out left, right and centre – we really are non-stop!

We’ve got a small taste of what to expect below, but remember, this really is just the basics. If you want to start your own student-run event – be it a themed week or a one-off show, pop into SUHQ Reception and someone will be able to give you a hand.

Every year in Term 2 we take on our arch-rivals, Coventry University, to see who can claim the title of the greatest sporting institution this side of the A46. Spanning the entire spectrum of sporting activities with over 40 fixtures, our teams compete for Varsity points.

Thus far, Warwick remains the undefeated Varsity Champion for 23 years and this is the one event of the year that gets the whole of campus involved to support TEAM WARWICK, so it’s definitely not something to miss!

At the end of the summer term is the annual sporting social highlight, the Sports Ball.

It is an event not to be missed and tickets are much sought-after, often selling out in less than a day!

Giving clubs and individuals the chance to celebrate their achievements over the year, the Sports Ball is the perfect way to end the sporting season.

The annual flagship event of the Economics Society at Warwick, the summit is held over a weekend in February. Entirely student-run, it doesn’t just cover economics: sessions also touch on many other relevant topics in the sphere of social studies such as development, politics, globalisation & international relations.

The Real Ale Society hosts the biggest and best student beer festival in the country. With over 120 beers plus ciders, fruit wines and meads to try, there is guaranteed to be a drink that will suit everyone’s palate!

The Real Ale Festival is all about introducing people to beer in its cask-conditioned form. Many people have never tasted a good pint of bitter before, and still more are unaware of the huge variety that is available under the ‘ale’ heading.

At the end of each year, we also honour the incredible work of our student societies at a glittering awards ceremony in the Arts Centre. Make sure you come along and celebrate with us at an amazing evening of dining, dancing and spectacular society performances!

When it comes to entertainment on campus, Warwick SU covers everything from big-name DJs and established acts to student bands, theatre, comedy, sport and dance. Whether it’s a club night, gig or society event, there’s always something interesting going on that’s sure to appeal to even the most wayward tastes - and, if not, you or your society can book out the venue to put on your own nights! Pop up to the Entertainments Department in SUHQ to find out more, and look out for our termly wallplanners for details of upcoming events.

If clubbing isn’t your thing, don’t worry – we also run a series of evening events in The Terrace Bar, The Dirty Duck and Curiositea which are designed to provide a more relaxed atmosphere for socialising. Highlights include our weekly acoustic night Un-Plucked, the Cleverducks Pub Quiz, Quackstar Karaoke, MiTunes, a fortnightly Saturday Session and more. We also regularly show key big-screen sport fixtures which always generate the best communal atmosphere on campus!

In addition to various seasonal spectaculars, we run a series of massive events at the end of Term 3, including the Graduation Ball, Sports Ball and our very own mini-festival, the Summer Party.

Don’t forget that, as with all Warwick SU’s commercial services, any money you spend in our venues is directly reinvested for your benefit – with that in mind, here’s a taste of what to expect this year from your SU!

Our thrice-termly salute to the noisier end of the spectrum – come and join in the fun as we unleash a barrage of rock, metal, punk, ska and alternative

Whether you prefer the eclectic ambience of the Saturday Session or something a little more vibrant, we pride ourselves on offering the best soundtrack to the most relaxing location. If you think there’s something we’re missing, there’s even the chance to step up and be the DJ yourself at our interactive spectacular, MiTunes!

An eclectic mix of soulful weekend sounds and tasty musical swerve-balls make up our diverse Saturday evening social. Expect Electro and Disco along with unexpected remixes and covers.

Join Captain Funkwash on his mission to find the perfect groove as he kick-starts your weekend with a jumping selection of hip-hop, funk, soul and

breakbeat cuts.

In addition to our regular programme of events, we’ll also be bringing you Paint Parties, Foam Parties, Hall Wars, occasional live gigs (including Bandsoc’s annual Battle of the Bands competition in Term 2) and other one-off shows throughout the year.

Whether it is Warwick Snow bringing you their annual night of carnage, Avalanche, a student DJ showcase from one of our music appreciation societies, Latin Nights or dance society performance evenings, the Warwick SU Entertainments Department is here to help make it happen.

No term at Warwick is also complete without our seasonal extravaganzas! The Halloween Ball and Christmas Ball see the venue transformed for the evening in Term 1, while the end of Term 3 sees us mount an epic, open-to-all-students outdoor mini-festival in the form of the Summer Party. With live bands, an inflatable playground, a free fairground, an after-party and much more running throughout the day, it’s truly the centrepiece of our Ents programme – make sure you keep your ears to the ground at the start of Term 3 for full details when they’re announced!

JOBS AT WARWICK SUHere in the Union we employ around 350 part-time student staff. We have a whole host of different roles available, from Bar Staff and Technical Services crew to our student Street Team. Working for the SU part-time is a great opportunity to meet people, have fun and – most importantly – earn a bit of extra cash.

As a Union, we understand that students are under a lot of pressure at specific points during the year – particularly during exam season. We always try our best to be flexible with our part-time staff, and accommodate any requests for fewer shifts. This is a lot easier for us than for other organisations, as when everyone is busy with exams we are always a little quieter than usual!

For details on how to apply for any of our roles within the SU, check out the jobs section of our website at www.warwicksu.com/jobs.

We always take on new staff during the Freshers period, but roles also crop up throughout the year so keep checking the SU website for details.

VOLUNTEERING AT WARWICK SUFrom being on a club or society exec to visiting local schools, Warwick SU has plenty of volunteering opportunities available which can greatly boost your employability. There are many to choose from, but we’ve highlighted two below:

Student Advice Centre ReceptionistsVolunteer a few hours a week to handle appointments and welcome people to the Advice Centre.

Warwick Volunteers offers you the chance to make a positive difference in the local community. From working in local schools to helping with conservation projects or befriending adults with learning disabilities, there’s a staggering range of opportunities to get involved with.

Maybe you have a special talent for art, music or sport that you would enjoy sharing with others? Or, perhaps you could help tutor children in local schools to improve literacy, numeracy or their grasp of a foreign language. Whatever your interests, Warwick Volunteers can find an opportunity for you.

Even if you’re short on time, you can still join in! Many one-off and short-term projects take place throughout the year, giving you the chance to volunteer without having to make a big commitment. It’s a chance to try something new or simply squeeze some volunteering into your busy student schedule. Many Sports Clubs and Societies also choose to volunteer as a group - why not encourage yours to get involved?

Volunteering is a great way to develop new skills, acquire vital work experience and increase your overall employability, whatever career path you want to pursue. You can create and manage your own project, increase your knowledge of a particular career area and hone your transferable skills in a productive and enjoyable way.

For more info, see the Warwick Volunteers website: www.warwick.ac.uk/volunteers and make sure you visit our Volunteering Fair in the Panorama Suite of the Rootes Building on Friday 4th October (Week 1).

If you’re looking to pick up some much-needed extra cash and would relish the ‘buzz’ of working as part of a lively and dynamic team then look no further than the Students’ Union. We have a number of positions available throughout 2013/14 and can offer you competitive rates of pay.

Future vacancies are likely to include:

Hi, I’m Jacqui Clements, the SU’s Chief Executive. I am responsible for managing the 350 dedicated staff who work alongside your elected officers at Warwick SU. We are the independent voice of students here at Warwick, and we work hard to understand your perspective and take your views to key decision-makers at the University and beyond.

Warwick SU is a charity whose sole aim is to ensure you have a great University experience - whatever that may be and whatever stage of your academic career you are at. YOU decide what you want to help with, how you want to spend your time and which issues are important to you.

Contrary to popular belief, the SU is not just here to provide a good social life for Undergrads. We are here to support, represent, entertain and develop you. The experiences you have whilst at Warwick will shape your life, and maybe even transform it. Immerse yourself in everything that University & Union life has to offer and you cannot fail to find something that will enrich your time here!
