Dear Parents/Guardians of WCS Students: May is F-U-L-L of learning at WCS, both in and beyond the school. Watch elsewhere in our newsletters and classroom announcements for information on what is happening every day for your child(ren) – reading, writing, math – and field trips to bring all that classroom learning to life! May is also that time of year when teachers look closely at each child, carefully assessing what they have learned during the year and how much they have progressed towards their end-of- year goals. Students are completing standardized testing in grades 2 through 6 and all students are completing benchmark tests to confirm their growth in important literacy skills. All this information assists teachers in supporting ongoing improvement and planning for instruction this spring as well as next year. Beyond the academic learning that your children are experiencing, they are also talking and acting daily to demonstrate the attributes of Code of Honor: to be Fair, Honest, Kind, Respectful, and Responsible. We start our days reviewing the Code together and reminding ourselves to show others these traits – “In all We Say and Do.” They receive recognition from staff for demonstrating those qualities and are encouraged to continue such behaviors in the wider community – on field trips, at home, and in their other activities. This code is colorfully translated onto a bulletin board displayed in our main hallway, which they pass every day and which supports their learning to think about what we “say and do”: THINK (before you speak) T – is it TRUE? H – is it HELPFUL? I – is it INSPIRING? N – is it NECESSARY? K – is it KIND? So…whether it is about what subject they are learning or what ways they practiced being fair, honest, kind, respectful, or responsible - there should be plenty of answers to “What did you do in school today?” as you ride in the car, or sit at the supper table, or go through a bedtime routine. I hope you enjoy these conversations and the joy of learning your children share with us every day! Deborah F. Why is Physical Activity Important?

Being physically active is fun, helps you look and feel your best, and gives you more energy to do other things.

Physical activity helps your body work better, too! It can:

• improve blood circulation throughout your body

• help keep weight under control

• improve blood cholesterol levels

• boost your energy level

• help you sleep

• make you feel good about yourself

• give you stronger muscles

Get Moving Today!

The more active you are, the faster your heart beats. Because your heart is a muscle, it becomes stronger and more efficient when you exercise it. You definitely want your heart to be strong enough to pump blood throughout your body! To benefit most from physical activity, try to get at least 60 minutes of moderate- or high- intensity activity each day.

If you are active at a low-intensity level, you should be able to sing while doing the activity. If you are active at a moderate-

intensity level, you should be able to talk comfortably while doing the

activity. If you are too out of breath to carry on a conversation, the

activity is considered high-intensity.
