Causes of WarTensions had been building in Europe for years!
• Militarism European Nations competed with each other to build the largest military
- Great Britain & Germany wanted largest Navy
- Russia, France, & Germany competed for the largest Army
“arms race” driven by strong feelings of pride (nationalism)
• Alliances For protection (from the large militaries), European countries formed defensive
partnerships and agreed to come others aid of attacked
- CENTRAL POWERS = Austria-Hungary + Germany + Ottoman Empire
- ALLIED POWERS = Great Britain + France + Russia
• Nationalism Extreme pride in one’s culture and nation –
- puts national interest ahead of global cooperation leads to fierce competition and antagonism in Europe BALKAN TURMOIL (throw off imperialist rule)
- Ethnic groups who did not have their own country wanted independence – promote their culture and interests above those of other countries. (Serbia, Bosnia, Croats, Yugoslavia)
- Imperialism was against the beliefs of nationalists!
• ImperialismCountries increased their power and wealth by controlling others.
- Industrialized countries acquire new (non-industrialized ) countries to supply them with raw materials.
- Quarrels broke out over who should control those colonies /interested in the same area
- Smaller countries did not always want to be controlled by others
