Cross-disciplinary Collaborative Student Industry Projects

Wanda V. Chaves, Ph.D. Sample Projects

With Cirque du Soleil, we have partnered on four projects: Project 1 – Service/Experience Design: Cirque du Soleil engaged students across all majors in a project to better Invoke the Imagination, Provoke the Senses, and Evoke the Emotions (Cirque's vision statement) of their audience members and fans. Students developed ideas for how Cirque could create magical experiences for their fans: (1) before they arrive on site to see a show via the internet/web/mail, etc. to increase excitement and anticipation for the show that is to come; (2) once they arrive on site and are waiting for the show to begin (how can the waiting experience, concessions, restroom, shopping and ticket buying experiences be incredible and unforgettable); (3) during the show through the use of technology and smart phones to engage the audience in what is happening on stage to make it more interactive; and (4) after they return home (how can Cirque continue to stay connected to their fans in unexpected ways?) Project 2 - Interactive Marketing and CRM Project: One of Cirque du Soleil's key marketing strategies and means of selling show tickets is through the Cirque Club. Students worked in teams to develop new and exciting formats for: (1) the interactions that members and fans can have via Cirque Club online with each other and with the brand/company; and (2) new apps that Cirque du Soleil could create which would link in unexpected ways to their Cirque Club The goal of the project was to increase loyalty to the brand and the membership of Cirque Club. Project 3 - Cirque du Soleil Shows 2020: Students collaborated with graduate students in the Master's for Research in Design and Innovation at the ELISAVA School of Design and Engineering in Barcelona, Spain to research entertainment (live and virtual) trends and propose ideas for what the Cirque du Soleil shows will be like in the year 2020. Project 4 - The Future of Nightlife Entertainment: Students worked with Cirque du Soleil Hospitality, the branch of the Cirque du Soleil company that focuses on developing new businesses in the industries of (1) Food and Beverage, (2) Hotels and Resorts, (3) Real Estate. In recent years, Cirque du Soleil Hospitality has opened two lounges in Las Vegas (The Beatles’ Revolution and Gold Lounge) as a compliment to their shows in The Mirage and Aria Resorts. In conjunction with their newest resident show Michael Jackson One, Cirque has also recently opened LIGHT, a nightclub in The Mandalay Bay Resort (which is already one of the top five grossing nightclubs in the world). Students collaborated to research trends in nighttime entertainment for the target market of 21-35 years olds and to develop concepts for the Cirque du Soleil Nightlife Entertainment Venues in 2020.

With Hasbro, we have partnered on three projects: Project 1 – Play-doh Students worked with the VP of Girl’s Toys to develop ideas for how the Play-doh brand can attract an older demographic. Students conducted research on the history and brand of Play-doh and developed recommendations for new products (real and virtual). Project 2 – Exploring the Bronies and other Adult Fans of My Little Pony Currently the My Little Pony brand is designed for children (2-8). Hasbro recignizes that the My Little Pony fan base includes a phenomenal much broader global audience. The mission of this project was to discover where Hasbro can take this magical brand. The students researched the scope and activities of the adult fan base and then designed and created a product line that is relevant to this new all-age audience. Project 3 – Portland at Play In collaboration with the students in the MFA program in Collaborative Design at PNCA, student teams worked with Hasbro’s VP of Innovation to explore urban play around the city of Portland, OR. Students conducted ethnographic research in different areas of the city to observe natural forms of play in the city and also identified areas with play deficits. The objective of the project was for the students to develop ideas around how a company like Hasbro might come into a city and encourage other forms of urban play as well as inspire play in areas where play might be most lacking and needed.

Students worked on a project with Microsoft Game Studios in which students worked on Version 2 of one of MGS's top Kinect game franchises for children. Students developed concepts for the new game play (in the living room - with the actual Kinect system) and game interactions as well as for a mobile app that would link to the game (outside of the living room), game-related merchandising, and partnerships with other businesses and brands that could link to the content of the game and support its sales.

Students worked with the senior leadership team at Tervis Tumbler over the course to develop concepts for how technology (and other means) may be used to make the Tumbler a smart object. Students explored the insertion of interactive screens into the tumblers as well as designed new product options that would attract new customers in the U.S. and internationally.

Students worked with the Executive Producer of Sesame Street to develop ideas around how Sesame Street can better appeal to Millenial parents in terms of content, format, and platforms for the show.

With The Dalí Museum, we have partnered on three projects: Projects 1 and 2 – Adult Visitor Experience Re-design; Children’s Visitor Experience Re-design Students collaborated on site with the team at The Dali museum in St. Petersburg to help them re-imagine and reinvent their adult and children’s visitor experiences. Students researched innovative service design opportunities and developed concepts around exciting virtual and live environments and experiences. The goal was to expand the story of Salvador Dali's life and work beyond the collection into every part of the museum experience including waiting in line indoors and outdoors for tickets, shopping in the store, using the facilities, and eating in the cafe. Project 3 – Traveling Dalí Experience: Students collaborated with the Director of the museum to design an interactive Salvador Dalí experience that could travel around the world and physically and virtually engage students in Dalí’s art, world, and life.

We have worked on a project with a Disney Imagineer in our International Management classes during the last five years. The student teams created either a Resort or RDE (retail, dining, entertainment experience) around a specific IP/theme of their choice in either India, China, Brazil, or England. The students learned the business aspects that support the design as well as design decisions made in developing and setting up an entertainment business overseas.

Students worked with the SR VP of Marketing and Branding for the Jim Henson Company to develop new business opportunities for expanding the brand and story of Sid the Science Kid. The students developed recommendations around potential new educational applications, products, business/partnership opportunities, and platforms where Sid may appear.

Students partnered with the founders and owners of LA-based Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (the creators of Robot Chicken on Cartoon Network) to develop a strategy for distributing their new stop motion series (and all future content/IP that the studio develops) in a novel and unexpected way.

For this project, student teams collaborated with the VP of Product Development and Global Innovation at Converse to address the following question: How can Converse maximize the power of innovation to achieve its mission of unleashing the Creative Spirit through products & experiences that inspire and enable each of our consumers to be his or her true, authentic self? Students developed concepts for new Converse products (sneakers, apparel, and accessories) and/or product experiences that will inspire and allow their consumers and fans to be their true selves; and to express and celebrate their unique individuality.

Students collaborated with MoonBot Studios on developing a line of merchandise and products that will continue the story that MoonBot's new creation The Numberlys has brought to life.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital engaged students in a project to help the leadership team improve the patient experience. Student teams were assigned to eight different areas of the hospital (e.g. check-in, cardiovascular services, emergency room, outpatient surgery, housekeeping, etc.) to study their current patient experience and design a new, more empathic process and overall experience for the patients in each area of the hospital.

Students collaborated with the leaders at Clean the World to re-imagine and redesign the visitor experience of the volunteers, potential donors, clients, and VIP’s who visit the Clean the World headquarters in Orlando, FL. The project included improvements to the physical facility, visual messaging, volunteer training, visitor tour, and to the overall story that is shared visually and verbally at the Clean the World facility.

Students worked with the President of Shelter Box to design concepts and a plan around how they can become a beloved non-profit organization by raising awareness for the vision and mission of the organization and increasing engagement with potential donors and volunteers. The three focuses were engagement: (1) in small cities like Sarasota; (2) in festivals and large events; and (3) with Millenials.
