Una Nota de la Directora...

P.A.W.S. Corner with Ms. Adams

The teachers and staff at Walter Douglas Elementary School have adopted the expectation of “P.A.W.S.” Throughout campus students are expected to be promptly prepared, act respectfully, work hard and stay safe. Each quarter the students and staff select an incentive the students can earn by following P.A.W.S and earning days without any negative discipline referrals to the office. This quarter the staff decided the incentive would be called, “Stick with P.A.W.S!” Each student will get to help duct tape Ms. Adams to the wall at our Quarter 1 incentive assembly on Wednesday, October 18th. As of now the student body has passed their goal of 7 days and we have earned 10 days without negative referrals, which means there will be a spirit day and music on October 18! If we reach 12 days without any negative referrals, a special mystery guest will attend the assembly! Students will be encouraged to show their spirit by dressing up in the color assigned to their grade level:

Kinder—White 4th—Yellow 1st—Orange 5th—Blue 2nd—Green 6th—Red 3rd—Purple

When you talk to your child about school, we encourage you to continue to ask, “How did you follow P.A.W.S. today?” or “Did the school earn another day without negative referrals today?” Positive reinforcement is a large part of our P.A.W.S. program and we encourage parents and guardians to communicate with their child about the positive reinforcement they receive at school. Student safety and academic success is our priority at Walter Douglas Elementary. We look forward to a positive and productive end of the first quarter and start to the second quarter!

costume, just in case they need to take it off.

We also ask that you please check backpacks every night for important notes that come home. Finally, continue to review the

This first quarter is flying by! Conferences are right around the corner. We ask to meet with every child’s family. Please return any conference papers promptly so we can try to arrange a time that fits your schedule. Due to tight schedules, be sure to arrive on time for your scheduled conference. It is important to be there so you can receive important information and tools to help your child. Students are allowed to wear a costume to school on Tuesday, October 31st. The costume needs to be school appropriate. Students will need to be comfortable staying in the costume all day, or will need to wear clothes underneath, as they

will not be sent to the bathroom to change. We will also be having a class fall celebration on the 31st! Our classrooms are currently in need of baby wipes and snacks. Thank you for all you do to help your child be successful!!

Miss Jacobson Ms. Jones Mrs. Turner Mrs. Vergara

appreciate those donations as we use them daily. Halloween is coming up soon and there will be a few

activities revolved around this holiday. If you do not celebrate Halloween, please let your child’s

teacher know. We will be allowing children to wear costumes on Halloween for our costume parade.

Hello 3rd Grade Parents! 3rd grade would like to remind you that we have started working on our school performance goals. For our reading goal, please read with your child each evening and ask them a question about what they have read. Students should record their answer on their “Homework Reading Reflection” log. For our math goal, please solve the weekly math problem with your child. You can work with your child to solve the problem two different ways, or have your child solve

first while you solve a different way afterwards. Discussing how you and your child solved the math problem will help your child become an even better problem solver! Secondly, parent-teacher conferences are the week of October 16th. Please plan on attending your child’s conference during that week. Finally, thank you for the continued donations of tissues, hand sanitizers, snacks, and dry erase markers. These donations are always appreciated! Thank you Parents!

Ms. Powers Ms. Knight Mrs. Dunham

continued donations of tissues, hand sanitizers, snacks, and dry erase markers! These donations are always appreciated!

year. Thank you all for your support in completing the red parent involvement

sheets, we appreciate your dedication to your child's learning. Parent teacher

Sixth Grade News Wow, we can't believe it's already October! Thank you to all of the parents that have

come in for mid-term conferences to help get your students on the right track. We

appreciate your time and effort in getting your kiddos settled into sixth grade! October

will be a busy month for us as we are DAP testing and welcoming Arizona Project Wet

and TPD into our classrooms. Parent conference sign up forms went home last week. If

you have not sent your form back, please do so as soon as possible so that we may

accommodate your schedule for conferences, especially if you are in need of translating services. Please note that

fall celebrations for sixth grade will be held on Tuesday, October 31 in the afternoon. Please do not send sugary

snacks to celebrate, but instead help your child develop healthy habits by sending fruits, juice, granola bars, etc. to

help celebrate the season. Costumes may only be worn on Tuesday, 10/31 and must be school appropriate. Thank

you for a wonderful start to the year and we look forward to the coming months teaching your children.

Your student will need to meet at the High School at 6:15pm that evening in the band room. The concert will begin at 6:45 and will last approximately 45 minutes. We will be going to the High School that morning for a practice, but a bus will take us. Permission forms have gone home. PLEASE read them carefully and return them as soon as possible. Our holiday concert is scheduled for Tuesday night, November 28 at 6:00 p.m. in the MPR; we will have a daytime assembly on Wednesday, November 29 at 9:00 a.m.

Recorders have arrived and 4th graders are beginning our work on recorder. All students should have a Recorder Karate folder that they bring each time to music. Help/practice time is available before school in the music room.

We are fortunate to have Mr. Brian Harris from the U of A come and teach our 5th and 6th graders drumming several times a month. The program is called Upbeat and is supported by a grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Upbeat students will perform with the Douglas Singers on November 28-29.
