MEMO: To Interested Parties FROM: Lauren Passalacqua, Communications Director, Walsh for Montana RE: Fact Sheet regarding Senator John Walsh DATE: July 24, 2014 Please find the updated information and statement on Senator John Walsh. FACTS ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE CAMPAIGN OF SEN. JOHN WALSH: Senator Walsh included 96 citations for a 14page paper at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He acknowledges the citations were not all done correctly, but that it was an unintentional mistake. John Walsh has been evaluated at every stage of his military career and made the decision when he entered the race to release those evaluations so Montanans could see for themselves exactly what kind of soldier he was. The record is available online here. The research paper was not a thesis, as reported by many organizations. While commanding the 1163 rd Infantry Battalion in Iraq in 2004 and 2005, Walsh survived hundreds of IED explosions while in a Humvee, he was targeted – by name – by Al Qaida in Iraq, and his unit endured hundreds of rocket attacks. Senator Walsh told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he was dealing with the consequences of the difficult circumstances he faced in Iraq, but he did not suggest that these circumstances were an excuse for incorrect citations in a research paper. It’s telling that this story emerges as polls show this race tightening – including one poll released the day this story was published that finds Senator Walsh down by only 4 points. For months, Walsh's record has come under significant scrutiny while Congressman Daines’ own career, including a history of opening factories in China as his company laid off American workers, continues to go without review. This story will not change Senator Walsh’s commitment to his campaign, and it does not change his resolve in dealing with the issues that matter most to Montanans: protecting Social Security and Medicare, defending public lands, protecting access to women's freedom of health care, and creating jobs. STATEMENT FROM LAUREN PASSALACQUA, CAMPAIGN SPOKESPERSON: "Montanans are proud of Senator Walsh's 33year career fighting for Montana and serving in Iraq. He’s a great soldier, who learned war strategy on the battlefield firsthand but he's not a classroom academic – the Senate already has plenty of those. Despite an unintentional mistake at the U.S. Army War College, he is back working for and protecting Montana and serving this nation, and we look forward to sharing the contrast to
