Jamie and Tammy Finlay with the Truffle hunting Malana.

Frankland River Truffiere is a small 800 tree truffle orchard and was set up in the Southern Forest region of Western Australia in 2011 by the Finlay family.

Most of the trees are French Oak, English Oak and Hazelnut.

They grow in black quartz sands, adjusted with lime to reach the desired PH level.

The Finlays began harvesting in 2018 and their finds have been rated first and extra class.

Tammy and Malana’s best find so far this season was a massive 701gram Black Perigord Truffle, their largest so far and one of the largest recorded finds in Australia to date.

An incredible find and totally beyond their expectations for their eight year old Truffiere.

In June 2018 Watercorp partnered with Western Australian company ManukaLife to deliver a sharefarming project in Walpole. This project involves an area of their land within the water catchment being planted with Leptospermum scoparium, a species of tea tree, for honey production for medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutraceutical products. This meets the requirement to revegetate this portion of land which helps protect our water catchment.

Based on the feedback we received at a drop-in session in August 2018 and due to wet weather conditions making it difficult to plant, they made the decision to pause the project until autumn 2019.

After pausing the project in 2018 to incorporate community feedback and await drier weather conditions, Water Corporation is now undertaking a staged approach to the sharefarming project, which will initially involve the revegetation of a much smaller portion of the public drinking water source area (PDWSA), plus an area outside this zone.

This modified project scope reduces the area being planted from 220 to 50 hectares, with just 10 hectares within the Drinking Water Catchment Protection Zone.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Honey production to proceed following environmental approval

The Water Corporation’s share farming initiative with ManukaLife in Walpole has been assessed by the Federal Department of the Environment and Energy (DoEE) and can proceed.

The Federal Department assessed the initiative on matters of national environmental significance in relation to planting tea trees to produce the honey for medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutraceutical purposes. Following community and stakeholder feedback received prior to, and public submissions during the environmental referral process, the share farming initiative will now begin on Water Corporation owned land.

Tree planting for the first phase will be reduced from 220 to 50 hectares in total, which will mean less herbicide use and fewer bees.

The project will now incorporate just 10 hectares of land within the drinking water catchment along with an additional 40 hectares outside the designated drinking water protection zone. The remaining 170 hectares of catchment will continue to be managed by Water Corporation to protect water quality for the community.

Great Southern Regional Manager Adrian Stewart thanked everyone who took the time to provide input and feedback. For further information, please visit: https://yoursay.watercorporation.com.au/walpolewater

Australia’s new definition of lamb

The definition of lamb is changing in Australia – from 1 July 2019.

The current definition of lamb is ‘A female, castrate or entire male that has 0 permanent incisor teeth’.

The new definition is ‘an ovine animal that: (a) is under 12 months of age; or (b) does not have any permanent incisor teeth in wear.’

This means a lamb is able to cut one or both of its permanent central incisor teeth, as long as they are not in wear.

The sheep industry has compiled a range of resources to inform producers and other industry stakeholders about the new definition. These fact sheets are available on the web site below.

The Walpole CRC can source and print these two fact sheets for you upon request.

Looking Back...with Molly How did it come about that a young Irish nursing trainee would eventually play such a vital part in the lives of the early settlers of Groups 116, 138 and 139?

This is the story of Sister Jane Anderson, born in Belfast in 1898…

During the 1920s a young nursing trainee who had pledged her life to God and taken on a nursing career to further serve her cause, looked for something to read whilst on a spell of night duty. An article in a Church magazine caught her interest. ‘Nurses and Deaconesses required for the Australian Bush.’

Jane Anderson realised that this could be her way to serve God. When her training was complete, she applied to the Colonial and Continental Church Society for a position. She was accepted, and in 1928 arrived in Denmark. From here she often visited the group settlement areas by truck and once stayed for a month in a caravan with a friend. This gave her the opportunity to meet many of the settlers.

She discovered an empty house in the 116 Group area and with the agreement of the Church Society she established a Mission House where she could live, visit the sick and render necessary medical aid throughout the group settlements. More on page 12...

Researchers from the Marine Ecology and Monitoring Section (MEMS) at DPIRD have been continuing their fish ecology and movement studies in the Walpole and Nornalup Inlets Marine Park. The project, which is in collaboration with Murdoch University, began in late 2013 and aimed to gather detailed information of the fish biodiversity and ecosystem health of this unique estuarine system. A fish monitoring program was established to track fish populations in the marine park and researchers have been regularly sampling the system to gather information on the numbers of fish and species present and their size composition.

To date, more than 50 fish species have been recorded in the marine park, half of which are important to recreational and commercial fisheries. Some of the most abundant species recorded include Black Bream, Australian Herring, Yellowfin Whiting, Southern Bluespotted Flathead and Tailor, which are regularly targeted by recreational fishers in the estuary.

Walpole Nornalup Inlets Marine Park – Fish Research Update 2019

Juveniles of several marine fish species, including Pink Snapper, Australian Salmon and King George Whiting, have also been recorded in high numbers throughout the estuary, which suggests that the Walpole-Nornalup system is an important nursery area for marine fish populations outside the estuary.

To gather more information on how various species use the marine park, researchers have also been tracking the movements of fish using acoustic tracking technology. This involves tagging fish with internal acoustic transmitters which emit a uniquely coded signal or ‘ping’ underwater to acoustic receivers or ‘listening stations’. Currently, acoustic receivers are deployed throughout the marine park from Monastery Landing in the upper Frankland River to as far downstream as the ocean outside the estuary mouth. This allows tracking of individual fish for up to several years and enables researchers to study how far and fast fish travel, as well as determine habitats and areas of the estuary that are of importance to fish populations. As of May 2019, 124 individuals from six species have been tagged and more than 2 million detections have been recorded from tagged fish, providing researchers with one of the largest and most detailed fish movement datasets of any WA estuary.

For further information about the fish monitoring program, please contact Daniel Yeoh at DPIRD by phone on 9203 0182 or email [email protected].

Male Dolphins Like Sponging For Mates

When it comes to making friends, it appears dolphins are just like us and form close friendships with other dolphins that have a common interest, according to new research led by The University of Western Australia.

The findings, published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B by an international team of researchers from the Universities of Zurich, Bristol and Western Australia, provides further insight into the social habits of these remarkable animals.

Shark Bay, a World Heritage area in Western Australia, is home to an iconic population of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, and the only place where dolphins have been observed using marine sponges as foraging tools.

Study co-author Dr Simon Allen, an adjunct research fellow with UWA’s School of Biological Sciences and senior research associate at Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences, said the learnt technique, passed down from generation to generation, helped certain dolphins known as spongers find food in deeper water channels.

“While the tool-using technique is well-studied in female dolphins, this study looked specifically at male dolphins,” Dr Allen said.

Using behavioural, genetic and photographic data collected from 124 male dolphins during the winter months in Shark Bay over nine years from 2007 to 2015, the team analysed a subset of 37 male dolphins, comprising 13 spongers and 24 non-spongers.

Dr Allen said male spongers spent more time associating with other male spongers than they did non-spongers, these bonds being based on similar foraging techniques and not relatedness or other factors.

SITUATION VACANT Men’s Health Week

Even though around half of the Australian population are men, more men than women are diagnosed with cancer each year. Men have a one in two chance of developing cancer before age 85 compared with a one in three chance for women.

Men’s Health Week aims to create awareness of the factors that influence men’s environments. How can we turn these statistics around and create positive environments in men’s lives?

If you can find cancer when it’s at an early stage, before it’s had the chance to get too big or spread to other parts of the body, it can often be easily removed or treated. If the cancer has spread, treatment becomes more difficult and a person’s chance of survival may decrease.

Sometimes men put off seeing their GP or health worker because they are worried about what the doctor might find, but it’s important to remember that the earlier cancer is found the better your chance of successful treatment.

If you notice any of these unusual changes in your body, tell your doctor straight away: blood in your poo or pee; coughing up blood; unexplained weight loss; becoming short of breath; feeling weak or unusually tired; a nagging cough or croaky voice; an unusual lump or swelling in your body; changes in a spot on your skin.

We also know that one third of all cancers can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle, and it’s never too late to change your bad habits. To reduce your risk: Stop smoking; avoid alcohol; be SunSmart; move your body; stay in shape; eat for health; participate in screening programs.

Whether it’s your brother, son, nephew or friend, let’s encourage all of the men we know to consider the factors that are preventing them from living a healthier life. Let’s help them to create healthy habits and environments, and urge them to seek advice from a GP or health worker when they notice any changes in their body.

Sister Jane Anderson From page 7...

Sister Anderson was joined by Deaconess Fleck as a spiritual influence and the two women became a symbol of security to district settlers who welcomed the wonderful service they offered. They were a familiar sight on the rough bush tracks as they went on their rounds in their horse and cart. Church services were organised as well as visits to the schools.

Occasionally school visits were made with the manager of the groups in his car (the only vehicle in the district). However, after a year of service by the two women, a car was obtained for use at the Mission House. It must be remembered also that the two women were responsible for all household chores including making bread and soap.

By 1932, with the Walpole settlement well under way, Sister Anderson found that the distances were too great to carry out their work successfully. A Cottage Hospital was opened in Nornalup. Sister Anderson resided there but Deaconess Fleck was transferred to Sydney. Sister Bazett occupied the Mission House for a time and worked throughout the district. She stayed in the Cottage Hospital when in that area and assisted Sister Anderson.

The story of Sister Anderson’s work at the Cottage Hospital will make interesting reading.

SNAIL TALES Rushing (as I do) around the garden lately I noticed hundreds of little aphids feasting on the tender shoots of many plants.

Now, while I like a little nibble myself I also know that they can be greedy and humans don’t appreciate them. While many solutions have been tried, not many seem to work.

So I had a word to some of my friends - birds, ladybugs, lacewings and praying mantises because I know they love to eat aphids – by the thousand.

Very soon they were tucking into a feast of little sticky, fat aphids and reducing the numbers considerably. (The aphids aren’t too happy about it though!)

So, if you look after my friends they will help you by keeping aphids at bay.

The Jewel of cookery... Source: www.perigord.com.au

The French Perigord (black) Truffle has arrived from past grandeur. The ancient Greeks and Romans attributed therapeutic and aphrodisiac powers to them, qualities still in vogue last century. Brillat Savarin referred to them as the “jewel of cookery” saying they aroused erotic and gastronomic memories among the skirted sex, and memories gastronomic and “erotic among the bearded sex” Alexandre Dumas described them as “the gastronome’s holy of holies.”

The French black truffle has a fresh shelf life of only three weeks, after which there is a rapid deterioration in quality. Each year in France, a proportion of the total production is processed, however executive French chefs will only cook with the fresh product. A French black truffle varies in size from 2 cm in diameter to the size of a grapefruit and is covered in black warts. Its appearance indicates nothing of its true value.

The truffles are found from just below the soil surface to a depth of 20 cm. Specially trained dogs and pigs are used to search for the truffles. German research has found that the truffles contain a steroid similar to that which is produced by male pigs during pre-mating behaviour. This steroid acts as a pheromone, hence the attraction to female pigs.

Study Urges Doctors To Be On Alert For Deep Vein Thrombosis General practitioners and physicians are being urged to keep a careful eye on the potentially deadly condition of deep vein thrombosis because the signs and symptoms of DVT are non-specific and often difficult to diagnose, according to a review published 15th June in The Medical Journal of Australia.

The review, co-authored by The University of Western Australia’s Professor Graeme Hankey, found that clinical presentation of DVT was often “non-specific” and accurate diagnosis required careful integration of clinical assessment, evaluation of pre-test probability and objective diagnostic testing.

Professor Hankey, a world-leading expert on stroke research, said signs and symptoms of DVT included localised pain, swelling, redness and dilated veins close to the surface of the skin.

The researchers said anticoagulation remained the gold standard treatment for DVT.

“The choice of anticoagulant should consider medical issues such as efficacy, safety, renal and hepatic function, and concurrent medications,” Professor Hankey said.

“In addition, practical issues such as availability, familiarity of use, patient preference and cost should be considered.”

Compression stockings have been shown to have a beneficial effect after diagnosis. In rare cases, devices to stop blood clots, treatment to dissolve blood clots or surgery to remove blood clots may be considered.

Situations which are likely to impact the choice of anticoagulant agent and duration of treatment include DVT which occurs in pregnant women, patients with cancer, DVT of the lower leg, recurrent DVT, autoimmune disorders such as antiphospholipid syndrome or those with superficial vein thrombosis, Professor Hankey said.

“The diagnosis of DVT requires a high index of suspicion because symptoms and signs are often non-specific,” he said. “Anticoagulation continues to be the cornerstone of therapy. The optimal anticoagulant and duration of therapy are determined by the clinical assessment.”

Sponging Dolphins From page 9...

“Foraging with a sponge is a time-consuming and largely solitary activity so it was long thought incompatible with the needs of male dolphins in Shark Bay – to invest time in forming close alliances with other males,” he said.

“This study suggests that, like their female counterparts and indeed like humans, male dolphins form social bonds based on shared interests.”

The study provides new insight into friendship-making behaviour in the social network of tool-using dolphins.

Manuela Bizzozzero, lead author of the study at the University of Zurich said male dolphins in Shark Bay exhibited a fascinating social system of nested alliance formation.

“These strong bonds between males can last for decades and are critical to each male’s mating success,” Ms Bizzozzero said. “We were very excited to discover alliances of spongers, dolphins forming close friendships with others with similar traits.”

The study was funded by grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society, Australia’s Sea World Research and Rescue Foundation Inc (SWRRFI), WV Scott Foundation and the AH Schultz Stiftung.
