Introducing David Crossley. David is the son of our esteemed music teacher, Trish Crossley and her husband, Bill.
I am a State and National Environment Award Winner and when I say David is one in a hundred thousand people, my
assessment carries weight. His powers of observation, his stamina and dedication to cleaning this local environment are second to none. He is quite simply phenomenal.

In the Australian honours system, appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service.
More than 1,000 outstanding Australians have been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List. They include father-daughter polar explorers, a former Prime Minister, world famous actors, journalists, lawyers, local leaders, fashion designers and our very own Dr Peter Hector Faulkner.
“It was a bit of a surprise, I thought they had the wrong Dr Faulkner. I am humbled and honoured but I really need to share it with my family and thank them for their unwavering support.”

Every recipient has made a significant contribution to the community, often quietly in the background seemingly unnoticed and without recognition.
Dr Faulkner graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1981. He is currently the Practice Principal at Denmark Medical Centre and has been working as a GP in Denmark since 1995.
He has worked tirelessly for ongoing improvement to health services and community care in the Denmark and Walpole rural communities of WA for the last 24 years. For nearly a decade he has been the Chair of the Denmark Medical Advisory Committee (WA Country Health) and in this role, and others, he has worked with enthusiasm to ensure major improvements in facilities and services not only in the Denmark Shire but also the small town of Walpole in the Manjimup Shire.
Hector Faulkner has been involved in many initiatives. He has provided support, professional advice, energy and encouragement to the community to ensure ongoing investments in health care. His enthusiasm and passion for providing the best health care possible has never wavered despite the often heavy load of running his own general practice. He has worked to make sure facilities are upgraded and built to cater for the aging population in Denmark and Walpole and for those in the community challenged by drugs and alcohol.
He was aware that with an aging population (Denmark having the highest average age in the state) there would be a need for more doctors and facilities. He had significant input in the design and identification of community needs for a new hospital and was a driving force in relocating Denmark Medical Centre to larger premises with additional services in 2014.
He lobbied the Shire of Manjimup and gave assurances that doctors such as himself would provide service and support when required. Without this support there were times Walpole would have been without a visiting doctor. He has encouraged locums and other GPSs to help provide services to the town. He gave advice on design and equipment appropriate for purchase in the facility.
Much of what he has contributed to the community is over and above what could normally be expected of a busy rural GP. He has continuously given his time to teaching medical students in the practice since he arrived in Denmark. He has travelled, and still travels extensively, to ensure delivery when gaps in professional services and support arise.

Prior to my recent hip replacement David accompanied me, each week, helping to keep the 100km of highway, bisecting the Walpole Wilderness from Peaceful Bay to Northcliffe, free of litter. Currently, David is working on his own, on a weekly basis, cleaning the highway north of Middleton Road. As of today he has passed Quinninup and is aiming towards the Warren River. He has averaged 4 - 5kms of highway cleaning per trip, which is exceptional.
The objective of this exercise is for David to reach the boundary of the Shire of Manjimup, north of Palgarup, by the end of June. Between us David and I will have created over 170 kms of litter free highway which equates to over 1/3 of the distance from the South Coast to Perth. An achievement of national significance.
Helping me to cover the costs of the exercise have been the following businesses and individuals :
Tree Top Walk Motel; Golden Wattle Café & Bakery; Walpole Pharmacy; Four Sisters Café & BP Walpole; Top Deck Café; Walpole Op Shop; Walpole Tidy Towns group; WOW Cruises; South Ward Councillor, David Tapley and Shire President, Paul Omodei.
I would like to thank all of the above for showing pride in our district and realising the potential of clean soil, clean produce, clean air and litter - free status, alongside the already declared Walpole Wilderness, as a marketing tool second to none.

The Denmark community has been fortunate that Hector Faulkner came, stayed and that his enthusiasm and passion for caring for both individuals and the community at large has never waived. He is a much respected and admired GP always going the extra yard for the community he lives in.
He has an admirable humility, always taking time to discuss surfing, AFL or junior soccer. Everyone calls him “Hector” and he would have it no other way.

Efforts to protect worldwide shark populations will reach State Parliament today, with Greens South West MLC Diane Evers to table a Bill aimed at stopping the sale of shark fin products in Western Australia.
Ms Evers, The Greens (WA) fisheries spokesperson, will propose banning the sale of food containing shark fins as part of the Shark Fin Prohibition Bill, with possible fines rising to $250,000.
Corporations will receive the heaviest penalties under the terms of the Bill, while offending individuals will be liable to fines of $50,000.
Shark finning is an offence for Federal and WA fisheries and involves removing fins from a live shark and returning it to the ocean to drown.
It is reported that thousands of kilograms of shark fins are imported into Australia each year through loopholes in existing regulations.
There have been previous efforts in Australian jurisdictions such as New South Wales to implement bans on the sale of shark fin food products, such as shark fin soup.
Many jurisdictions have implemented their own specific bans on shark finning, while some, including various US states and territories, have gone even further and implemented direct bans on possessing shark fins.
Ms Evers, who has been vocal in the past about the harmful effects of baited shark drumline trials in south west waters, said the Bill would go some way towards removing threats to open-water shark populations.
Diane Evers MLC had the following to add;
“This Bill is a clear, measured and important step in our work towards ending the inhumane and wasteful practice of shark finning.
The international community recognises that shark finning damages species and ecosystems, while shark fins have not been established to offer any scientific health benefits.
Unfortunately, foods such as shark fin soup continue to be offered in restaurants as a delicacy.
The introduction of offences in this Bill, which clearly prohibit the sale of food containing shark fins, will close significant loopholes and assist with enforcement in the food and fisheries areas.
Private individuals making or consuming food containing fins will not be captured by the offence

Signs it’s a Scam: How can I tell the above is a scam? Firstly - I do not nor have I ever had a Pokie account.
Secondly - An actual company would have an email address that contained the companies name.
Thirdly - 531,21 AUD is not how I would expect money to be depicted. I would expect it to look like: $531.21 AUD or $531,21.00 AUD
And fourthly - If I had that kind of money owed to me, I would certainly know where is was and who it was that owed it to me! Wouldn’t you?

Kathy Barrett-Lennard is one Pemberton resident who enjoys seeing the area she lives in clean and rubbish-free.
Her mission is to help keep the area in a pristine condition by collecting rubbish found along a section of Vasse Highway, which stretches from Pemberton through to the turn-off for South Western Highway.
She said she had been passionate about keeping the environment clean ever since she was a child.
“I grew up in a family where no matter where we were, whether it was a picnic or going for a walk, we would always pick up any rubbish we saw and put it in the bin,” Kathy said.
“It is just great to see an area tidy and free of rubbish, particularly in such a pristine and lovely environment such as the one down here.”
Kathy said the amount of rubbish on the stretch of Vasse Highway she now tries to clean up regularly, used to bother her a lot.
She said the majority of what she saw in the area was take-away coffee cups and drink cans.

clean up outside Pemberton. Photo: Tari Jeffers
“I just thought, ‘well it would be easy enough to stop and pick it up’, so I started to do so,” she said.
“It grew from there really, my husband and I adopted the spot through the Keep Australia Beautiful Council and they send us these orange bags to put the rubbish in, gloves and equipment to pick the rubbish up with.”
Kathy said she had used about 500 of the orange bags since she first signed up through Keep Australia Beautiful.
“Every now and then when I get a bit low I ring them up and they very kindly send through another box of 100 which keeps us going for a while.
“I really hope I have prompted some other people to do something similar, it does not have to be such a big stretch, it can even just be the verge outside the front of your house or farm, it all helps.”
She also said she hoped when people saw the roadside was tidy, it would deter them from dumping rubbish in the first place. On top of cleaning the roadside herself, Kathy has also organised group clean-up days for the area.
“I have not organised one since last summer but I could do another one any time, it is just a matter of calling round and organising it.
“Sometimes when people see me they will ask if I can let them know when the next group clean-up will be so they can help out too, which is just fantastic.”

Tingledale Hall was the place to be last Friday when the BTH Ladies held their annual Soup and Sandwich Day to raise funds for the Cancer Foundation...a function which has been a tradition for more than twenty years.
The rain started as the first customers entered the hall. Cups of tea or coffee were soon made and enjoyed until the call came from the kitchen that it was time to sample the variety of soups and accompaniments. The little hall quickly filled with a cross section of residents who enjoyed the chance to socialise with neighbours.
There was a time, early in the history of this function, that only the ladies of the district came along to enjoy the outing, until one year the club added a line to the advertising posters… “Blokes are welcome to come along as well” and since then the day has become an important part of the social calendar to all district residents.
Cakes and other goodies followed the variety of soups and a raffle kept everyone interested.
BTH Ladies would like to thank the many donors who provided items for the raffle and also district residents for their fantastic support which resulted in an amount of $1100 for the Cancer Foundation.

Kathy also encouraged people to register with Keep Australia Beautiful so they could report people they saw polluting the area.
“There is quite a hefty fine for littering and the council will issue it to the person, as long as you catch their number plate and can tell the council the location and time it occurred,” she said.
This year, Kathy was nominated for the Shire of Manjimup’s Citizen of the Year awards thanks to her work in the community.
“I like to get involved with local organisations and efforts.
“I am most involved with the Pemberton Accommodation Association outside of my work with Keep Australia Beautiful and I am very grateful to have been recognised for this work, although I would never expect or ask for such recognition.”
Kathy also does work with the Red Cross, Cancer Council WA and the Heart Foundation and said she loved to give practical support to organisations which needed it.
Looking to the future, Kathy said she would continue to volunteer with Keep Australia Beautiful and said the next step was working out how to stop people littering.
“Most people are very conscious of taking their rubbish with them but there are some people out there who are not, which is hard for me to understand.
“I think it starts with education for young children, teaching them to appreciate the environment and to want to help maintain it.”

We won’t mention the footy, but we will mention Ashleigh Barty - what an awesome performance in winning the French Open, one of only four major tennis events in the world! She is now ranked Number two in the world. It’s funny how things go. We used to get 25 or more tennis players at the courts on Tuesday night through the summer, not finishing until after midnight! What has happened?

Country Club Bowls Report Despite the stormy weather on Sunday 9th June a group of us had a good game of scroungers bowls without getting wet. It rained just before we started and straight after we finished.
The ladies and men played separately on this first game of the Scroungers season.
Ann Armstrong won the ladies competition and Graham Pola won the men’s.
Our meeting time for next week’s scroungers is 9:30am. The game finishes at lunch time.
We would love to see some new players, bowls and refreshments available.

provisions, as long as the product is originally purchased as a whole shark.
This ensures that the offences are targeted to the commercialisation of the shark finning practice rather than activities of consumers.
There are also provisions within the Bill to safeguard commercial fishers acting in compliance with fisheries regulations.
The proposed amendments to the Food Act 2008 will improve food standards and ensure the practice of shark finning is prohibited at each stage of the supply chain.
This Bill simply seeks to treat shark fin food products the same as others considered unsuitable for consumption and will mirror provisions for existing offences under the Act.
It does not go as far as the bans implemented in some US states such as California, Hawaii, Texas and New York but will be an effective step towards ending the awful practice of shark finning.
Even with bans in place, we know that some fishers continue this cruel practice – in 2015, a boat was apprehended in Queensland waters carrying over 3,000 shark fins.”
