We welcome your opinion Litter-free debate: a solution I hear plenty of pros and cons for the “litter-free” signage, but no alternatives. I propose a competition to select a new, (or keep the old) motto. I have a couple in mind, but I will keep them under

my hat for now. Who knows I just might win. —Anthony Thompson.

July 6, 2016 - 5

Walpole Weekly

I have been following the discussion in your paper on the issue of removing the Welcome to Walpole Litter-Free sign. I do not follow the rationale behind removing a sign that has such a strong message that expresses

community values and pride. Litter is a major issue in Western Australia that does not receive the prominence it deserves. Litter is a complex issue that incorporates a diverse array of economic, environmental and social aspects

and subsequently requires the involvement of a range of community, industry and government stakeholders. The success of any strategy to prevent litter depends on a significant change in community attitudes and behaviour.

Walpole has achieved success in this area by changing attitudes and behaviour. The community of Walpole have demonstrated enormous success, receiving recognition by the Keep Australia Beautiful National Association Ltd. and Keep Australia Beautiful Council of Western Australia in winning several awards at Regional, State and National

levels. The significance of these awards has elevated Walpole on the National stage, highlighting a

community’s achievement of a litter-free environment. An example of this is the current most littered locations in Western Australia are the highways but not the highway that leads into and out of Walpole because of the efforts of individuals in the community. It is recognised that highly littered areas along with poorly maintained infrastructure attracts more litter, illegal dumping, anti social behaviour and petty crime such as graffiti and vandalism.

The results and benefits that flow from taking positive action against litter and illegal dumping can extend well beyond the immediate visual impact of litter. The sign Walpole Litter-Free is an indication of a community that is proud of their town and what they have achieved. It demonstrates the value this community places on a clean, green environment and sends out a strong reminder to travellers entering the town on the correct

disposal of litter. The sign also gives litter a high

priority and recognition of the importance of a litter free community. This positive action by Walpole not only prevents litter and protects the environment but delivers social and economic benefits to the community. The removal of the sign was short sighted and should be reconsidered. —Mel Hay APM, Retired Assistant Commissioner WA

of the Nannup, Manjimup and Pemberton Local Drug Action Groups who worked in conjunction with the Augusta Margaret River, Nannup and Manjimup Shires

along with the Northcliffe Family Centre to get the project off the ground.

Ms Wilkinson explained that Gene Hardy from Cape to Cape Explorer tours will coordinate the camp and challenge the young people to learn new survival skills. Manjimup Shire President, Wade DeCampo, and Augusta/Margaret River Shire President, Ian Earl, will be guests of honor at the camp. They will cook dinner with the youth and talk about what it takes to be a good leader.

Cr DeCampo said “I am very keen to get amongst it with our youth, talking to them about their issues and concerns and also to show off some of my excellent

bush cooking skills”. Cape to Cape Explorer tours Operations Coordinator

Saul Cresswell said that through survival camps participants identify personal leadership strengths and find solutions for overcoming perceived challenges. “All participants are sure to gain from the leadership and survival skills training,” he said. Cr DeCampo concluded by saying: “This age group is such an important part of our demographic, this initiative is a perfect opportunity to connect with our future leaders of tomorrow.”

Ms Wilkinson said that funding for the camp had

been generously provided by the Shires of Manjimup and Augusta/Margaret River and LDAG Inc. Reader response to Letters to the Editor, WW June 29. What a lot of ‘hullaballoo’ about our town’s entry statement that was. So I thought I would put my oar in, so why not let

me join the pontificators and the dogmatic with something simple!

I think, or do we all know, that some person wrote the sign, what, years ago, that highlighted Walpole as being a tidy town and generally ninety-nine percent free from litter. If you don’t agree, then just take a ride outside our surrounding region and look along the verges etc., then compare! It’s horrible and tragic that people are still discarding rubbish of all kinds.

Oh, don’t think it doesn’t happen here, it damn well does, and but for two very devoted community members, we’d be in the mire, like most other areas in

Australia. It doesn’t deserve the alternative suggestions being put forward for it was there, and it doesn’t matter if visitors see it, don’t see it or love or loathe it. It was Walpole’s, and the general community got to take it for granted. We don’t need to #hashtag the

meaning of ‘litter-free’, we just need to quietly be proud of it! What we should get annoyed about is that some community rat, of the two legged variety, had enough malice in mind to destroy something that a lot of outsiders thought was verging on the iconic for

Walpole, considering that we don’t have a giant banana, apple, wine bottle or lobster. Just like the other signs, trees and bushland that had

been vandalised around town recently, it was nasty, ill thought-out and an incident that we should not tolerate should the person be eventually found out! —Peter Newton

Letters continued...

While celebrating our wedding anniversary at a local cafe I noted their advertising which read, “Real Fish, Real Fishermen. Real Story” and said to my wife, that's creative advertising. As a result I share the following to the discussion on

Walpole’s signage currently running in your paper: Wonder while you wander, in Walpole’s wilderness. Will litter - ation be fonder, in welcoming our guests. What visitor wants to see, is community to agree. —Geoffrey Newby

The Shire of Manjimup has called upon residents to minimise waste by redirecting appropriate items to recycling centres. Shire President Cr Wade DeCampo said that Manjimup Shire Council is committed to the proper management

of waste generated in the Shire. Cr DeCampo said, “The Manjimup Recycling and

Refuse Centre and transfer stations at Northcliffe, Pemberton and Walpole operate to the high standards required by the Department of Environment Regulation.” Cr DeCampo explained that these sites provide opportunity for those depositing waste to separate it into various streams of reusable or recyclable materials and he encouraged all residents to ensure their waste is

directed, where possible, into the appropriate recycling stream. “This minimises the volume of waste going to

landfill and also serves to screen out the various materials which pose a risk of polluting our environment,” Cr DeCampo said. “On the other hand, many of these materials are of value for re-use in various manufacturing industries, so recycling them is a great way to reduce resource use on

a broader scale,” he added. Apart from the everyday household items like bottles, cans and newspapers, Cr De Campo said more substantial items like used batteries, car tyres, cooking oil and even mattresses could be directed to a recycling

destination. “All residents of the Shire can do their bit on their own patch to help protect our planet from the problems of too much waste,” Cr DeCampo said.

The construction of a new Wilderness Ocean Walk

Trail across the Denmark coast has been announced today by Denmark Shire. The 7km walk and ride trail will run from the Denmark Community Windfarm to Lights Beach.

A Shire spokesperson said that the trail will be a 2m wide sealed surface following the natural terrain. “Great Southern Sands were awarded the tender for construction and have started to profile the trail. “Gravel will be stockpiled at the Windfarm and Lights Beach for use in trail construction.” The Shire also said that some gravel will be taken

into Back Beach to construct the mid-section of the trail, but that Back Beach will still be open to local traffic.

The Shire expects the project to be completed by end of November. For safety reasons, the Shire of Denmark have asked members of the public to keep away from the trail whilst it is being constructed.

The Shire of Denmark has recently completed a series of studies, on-ground works and educational initiatives in an effort to stop the spread of Phytophthora dieback throughout Denmark. Shire of Denmark’s Sustainability Officer, Donna

Sampey said that the project, was made possible through funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program and support from South Coast Natural Resource Management and targeted four priority Shire-managed reserves identified in a 2010 dieback study.

Ms Sampley explained that Phytophthora dieback is an introduced plant disease which is now wide-spread throughout the south-west of Western Australia. It is a water mould that is spread by the movement

of infested soil, water or plant material. Dieback attacks and rots the roots of living plants, often resulting in plant death. “Over 40% of native plant species are susceptible to dieback, which means that plant death can cause a dramatic change in the density, composition and structure of our bushland,” she said Ms Sampley further explained that a qualified

dieback interpreter re-assessed three of the priority

reserves: Peace Street Reserve, Redgum Lane Reserve, and the western end of the Denmark-Nornalup Heritage Rail Trail. “The assessment updated the dieback disease distribution mapping and reviewed hygiene management recommendations for each of the reserves. The results of the re-assessment were not encouraging, with the vast majority of all three reserves identified as infested with dieback.”

Ms Sampley said that work was undertaken to raise

awareness of dieback among the surrounding community and reserve users. Dieback demarcation signage was upgraded at 17 reserve entrance points and two disease information signs were installed.

New signage hopes to improve dieback awareness

“This new signage highlights the issues associated with dieback and brings the infested status of the area to the forefront of visitors’ attention,” she said. Ms Sampley concluded, “Everyone has a part to play in stopping the spread by reading dieback signage, ensuring footwear is cleaned on entry and exit to reserves, avoiding scheduling activities during wet soil

conditions and buying plants from accredited

nurseries.”
