School Security
All parents and visitors enter-
ing the school during school
hours must be buzzed in
through the front doors and
sign in and out at the office.
You are also reminded to
wear a visitor’s badge while
you are in the school. For
safety reasons, it is important
that we know who is in the
school at all times.
A Message from the Principal
It is unbelievable to me that this school year is coming to a close. We certainly
packed a lot into this year, including moving in to our beautiful school on
Labour Day weekend, ordering and organizing all of our brand new 21st century
learning resources, participating in a huge variety of athletic tournaments,
intramurals and extra-curricular activities, monthly assemblies, Counting on You,
OFIP tutoring, and Family Reading, Numeracy and EQAO nights, a Quebec
City trip and numerous other field trips. We enjoyed a wonderful Primary
Winter holiday concert, a spring “Pirates” play, and an absolutely incredible
“Official School Opening” ceremony.
In June, we are looking forward to 2 special Kindergarten events: Welcome to
Kindergarten Night, and our first Annual Kindergarten Concert. The school will
participate in Pan Am Games Day, and the month will end with our first Grade
8 Graduation Ceremony.
Thank you to all of our Walnut Grove families – you have been so supportive
throughout the entire year. We are so proud of our school and our entire
school community. Our students have had an amazing academic year, with
incredible opportunities to participate in so many enriching activities. It has
been a fabulous year together!
On behalf of the Vice Principals, Mrs. Ajrawat and
Mrs. Bineesari, I would like to wish all of our Walnut
Grove families a safe and happy summer! We look
forward to seeing you on September 8th!
Goodbye Mrs. Ajrawat
It is always hard to say goodbye to someone that means so much to us. It is with mixed
emotions that we must say “Goodbye” to Mrs. Ajrawat as she moves on to her new,
very important job. Mrs. Ajrawat has been assigned as PRINCIPAL, to a school in Missis-
sauga, Munden Park Public School. We know that she will be an excellent Principal, and
will do a great job working with the staff , students and community of Munden Park.
We wish her well in her new position, and we thank her for all that she has done for us
at Walnut Grove. Good Luck Mrs. Ajrawat! We will miss you.

Monthly Character/Equity Focus
This month the Character focus is Good Character. Our Equity focus is
Circles and Cycles. When thinking about Good Character, we are looking
at consistently showing good character throughout the year.
Things to consider when thinking about Circles and Cycles:
The concept of the circle is used to show students how they can continue
to examine their own lives and the world around them. It can also show
how, by learning, they can help others to learn, making an ever-widening
circle of people who
are open-minded and
inclusive. What have
students learned?
What do they want to
learn more about?

able to order either Mr. Sub or Swiss Chalet

Walnut Grove’s Official School Opening - May 7, 2015
We are so proud of our staff and students at Walnut Grove. They had worked for many months, preparing for our
Grand Opening, and it was grand indeed! The art work that adorned the hallways, the staff room, the Forum and the
Gymnasium was simply incredible. The TALENT in the performances was astounding! The history of Walnut Grove was
told through a series of 6 slideshows and Black Light shows, performed by the Grade 6, 7, 8 classes:
The Roots of Walnut Grove
Social Justice, A Safe Place to Be
Technology and Numeracy
Faiths and Cultures of Walnut Grove
Arts and Sport at Walnut Grove
A Celebration of Past, Present and Future
Our Grade 3 French Immersion Choir captured the audience with their singing, particularly with the unveiling of our
school song, “Walnut Grove is the Place to Be.”
Our Bollywood and Bhangra student dance teams dazzled the audience with their joy of dancing.
We welcomed special guests, Superintendent Patrika Daws, Trustee Carrie Andrews and Associate Director of Operations,
Jaspal Gill. Our School Council represented the wonderful Walnut Grove community.
All staff worked incredibly hard to make sure that the evening was a huge success, and it was! THANK YOU STAFF – you
are an amazing team of educators!
Walnut Grove’s Official School Opening – May 7-8 Daytime Activities
As part of our celebration of our Grand Opening, students were treated to a variety of other fun activities.
Over the span of 2 days, all classes from Grade 1-8 participated in fun, cooperative and team building activities
run by the City of Brampton’s Parks and Recreation Committee.
The PALS leaders provided fun activities for our Kindergarten students
One of our parents, Mr. Chaggar, donated his “photo booth” for students to have fun photos taken with their
friends (we will have these photos available to students shortly, as we are in the process of printing them – the
remaining students will also have their photos taken soon J)

Students received certificates and pins as inaugural students of Walnut Grove Public School
Grade 8 Graduation
The results are in and Walnut Grove's first ever graduating class have voted Red Carpet as the
theme for grad night. We are super excited for the special event, and have a jam packed,
tailored program planned out for the Grade 8s, including a graduation luncheon, a grad trip,
and the big ceremony itself. Our star wolves will be celebrating in style with performances
from the junior wolves, a professional photo booth, arcade games, a DJ and, of course,
food!
We are very proud of our grade 8 students, their cooperation, forward thinking and charac-
ter – they will be missed.
Preparing for the Summer
Excessive exposure to the sun can lead to health concerns such as sunburn and skin cancer. As summer
approaches and the weather gets warmer, it is necessary to apply sunscreen to protect ourselves from
too much sun damage and burns.
In summer, we are exposed to higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) rays. This exposure is a risk factor for
developing skin can-cer and cataracts later in life. The UV index is the measure commonly used in Cana-
da to assess the strength of the sun’s UV rays risk on a given day.
What is the UV Index?
The index scale ranges from 0 to 10. The higher the value, the more intense ultraviolet rays.
The UV index is calculated daily by Environment Canada using ozone and weather information. It can vary from day to
day with changes in the ozone layer – the thinner the ozone layer, the higher the index reading.
How to protect your family from the sun?
Wear a hat (preferably with a broad brim), sunglasses and protective clothing on sunny days.
Use sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or greater whenever you're outdoors.
Encourage your children to play in shady areas if they are outside for a long period of time.
Remember that sunburn can occur even on a cloudy day, as up to 80 per cent of UV rays can pene-
trate light clouds, and 40 per cent of UV rays can bounce back from sand, water or concrete.
Medication
If your child will require to take or have
any medication (eg. Epi-pens, inhalers)
while at school due to asthma, allergies
or other medical conditions please in-
form the office. You will be given a
medical form that will need to be com-
pleted by your family doctor and re-
turned to school with the
medication. No medica-
tion can be administered
at the school without
having a current medical
form completed and on
file at the school.

7:30 pm in the Library. We will

On the road again—how to keep your cyclist safe Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start:
The right fit children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground

Get noticed a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector older riders should have a light and/or reflectors
Follow the rules no riding on busy streets
no riding at night
stop for all STOP signs
Actions that cause injuries driveway ride out—not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street running the stop sign
turning without warning
cycling in the dark

Summer activities that boost learning Kindergarten to grade 4
Sorting and stacking – Teach classification skills with dinnerware. Ask your child to match and stack dishes of similar sizes and shapes. Also have your child sort flatware – forks with forks, spoons with spoons. This is like recognizing the shapes of letters and numbers. Comic strip writing – Use comic strips to help with writing. Cut the segments of a comic strip apart and ask your child to arrange them in order. Then ask your child to fill in the words of the characters (orally or in writing). Float and sink – Encourage hypothesizing (guessing). Use several objects – soap, a dry sock, a bottle of shampoo, a wet sponge, an empty bottle. Ask your child which objects will float when dropped into water in a sink or bathtub. Then drop the objects in the water, one by one, to see what happens.
Grades 5 to 8
Follow the news – As a family, choose an important news event to follow for a day or two. Ask each person to find as much information on the topic as possible – read newspapers, look at online news webpages, lis-ten to the radio and watch TV news. Then talk about what everyone learned. Pro and con: what do you think? – Make a family game of discussing a special issue. For example, "Teenagers should be allowed to vote," or "There should never be any homework." Ask your children to think of all the reasons they can to support their views. Then ask them to think of reasons opposing their views. Which views are most convincing? For variety, assign family members to teams and have them pre-pare their arguments pro and con. Stretch, run, walk – Ask your child to do at least one kind of exercise every day. For example, run or walk briskly for 10 minutes. Walk, when possible, instead of driving, for any distance less than a mile. Have your child make a week-long exercise plan. Try to think of a modest reward for sticking to the plan and exercise with your child. Let your voice be heard – Promote good citizenship. Help your child write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper about an issue affecting children – for example, suggest that a bike path be built near the school or that a city event be planned for youngsters. Children are citizens, and their ideas are worth hearing.
