Dear Colleagues,
As the year 2018 draws to a close, it is time for us to reflect on our performance, reckon how best have we fared and how efficiently have we been able to sustain in the competitive infrastructure sector. It gives me immense satisfaction to note that we successfully faced all the challenges coming our way which have led the organisation to emerge stronger and a resilient entity. Your hard work has propelled the organisation to attain numerous achievements, and that same commitment is what we need to continue to keep us in a solid position, improving our performance further across the board.
On the business front, the company, in addition to securing many prestigious projects, has also delivered some vision projects of the Govt. such as National Police Memorial and many others. The stature of NBCC has continuously grown high due to our strong execution record and we have been enhancing the value for all our stakeholders. The Government has been assigning us with key responsibilities and we are their proud partner in progress. Continuing the good work, NBCC has been shouldered with the task of Reconstruction and Maintenance of Heritage Structures. As a part of the assignment, the Company has rejuvenated & restored Delhi’s Purana Qila and lake which was recently dedicated to the public.
The past quarter also saw grand celebrations, jubilation and festivities. The Annual Promotion results were declared symbolising company’s appreciation for your unblemished dedication and hard work which has made all the difference to the company. The celebrations culminated with the 58th Foundation Day of NBCC which was commemorated in the form of a sand art sculpture by renowned Padma Shri awardee artist Sudarsan Pattnaik. An inspirational installation representing two main arms of the company, i.e., Human Resources and Engineering capabilities, aptly called ‘Wheel of Progress’ was also created and unveiled at head office.
It is quite satisfying for me as I behold today that our committed accomplishments deservingly find matching expressions through occasional celebrations and inspired actions. But let us grasp a word of caution also. We must remember that 'success is not constant'. Therefore, to make success sustainable, we need to maintain what we have achieved so far by focussing on the big picture and keep creating and capitalising on opportunities, instead of giving into instant gratification. We have to face up to our responsibilities and hold ourselves accountable in order to remain in reckoning. Hence, I urge upon all of you to continue with the strides in your pursuit of excellence.
I wish you all good luck and hope that we work together to make NBCC stand apart. Let us believe in seeing many more great experiences, more expansions, growth and excitement in the year ahead.
With best wishes and greetings for the time ahead.

Pen Down / Mutual Funds
Generally we have a habit of investing our hard earned money in fixed deposits, as they are one of the oldest and
safest investment instruments provided by the banks. The interest rates on fixed deposits are higher than the interest provided on savings account or current account balances. As it is necessary for every individual to diversify his or her investment portfolio, fixed deposits are the most preferred choice being a regular income source of investment.
But do we know the various multiple tax advantages mutual funds are offering over fixed deposits? First of all, what are mutual funds? A mutual fund is a professionally-managed investment scheme, usually run by an
using Mutual Funds

asset management company that brings together a group of people and invests their money in stocks, bonds and other securities. Taxability of these capital gains is given in the Table 1.1
Further, dividends on mutual funds can be bifurcated into Equity funds and Debt funds, both of which are tax free for the unit holder.
Now talking of FDs, in three years, falling interest rates have knocked off around 40 per cent from the annual income that a FD would yield. That's a shocking decline. Each step in the decline of FD rates appears small. They're generally around 0.25 per cent to 0.5 per cent, which sounds trivial.
However, the actual reduction in income is much more significant. For
NBCC News www.nbccindia.com

instance, a decline in the interest rate from 7.5 per cent to 7 per cent is a reduction of 7 per cent in the income that the deposit generates. Over the past three years, you would have seen a 2.5 per cent decline in the rate of interest that you earn from your FDs, from 8.75 per cent to 6.25 per cent. However, in terms of actual income, that's a reduction of 40 per cent.
The logical way to deal with this issue is to shift your money from FDs to mutual funds. Mutual funds that have a low risk profile would appeal to FD holders. These have rates of return that appear to be only marginally higher than those of fixed income. However, the math works the same way as in the above example. Over the past year, a FD would have yielded 6.75 per cent interest, which was the rate in late 2018. Over the same period, an average mutual fund, which has negligible risk and variability, would have yielded 17.17 per cent (source: www.valueresearchonline.com, SBI magnum balanced fund).
However, in addition to this, there's a cherry on the cake: Taxation. For investment of less than one/three years, the taxation is the same for the two options. If you sell off the entire mutual fund investment, the earnings will indeed be taxed in the same way as the FD, that is, by being added to your income. However, if your goal is to withdraw the gains, the tax paid in the case of mutual funds is much less. The reason is
There are other benefits which most of us seem to be unaware of. For instance in FDs, you have to pay tax every year. That's money that won't be earning returns in the future. In the equivalent mutual fund investment, there's no annual tax liability because the gains are not considered income. So the money is available for compounding for as long as the investment is held. Considering all this, it makes you think whether all our money that we have locked in FDs is actually an investment in our favour or just a place to park our funds.
DisclaimerMutual fund investments are subject to market risks. Please read the scheme information and other related documents before investing. Past performance is not indicative of future returns. Please consider your specific investment requirements before choosing a fund, or designing a portfolio that suits your needs. We make no warranties or representations, express or implied, on mutual funds. We accept no liability for any damages or losses, however caused, in connection with the use of, or on the reliance of mutual funds. The recommendations and reviews do not guarantee fund performance. They carry unknown risks and uncertainties linked to broad markets, as well as analysts’ expectations about future events. They should not, therefore, be the sole basis of investment decisions.
simple. Interest is income, while mutual fund returns are capital gains, when you receive interest from a deposit, the entire thing is considered income. However, when you withdraw money from your mutual fund investment, a part of it is the original principal you invested, which is obviously tax-free.
Here's a concrete example. Let's say you invest `10 lakh in a mutual fund. A year later, the value of the investment has increased to 10.8 lakh. Now, you want to withdraw the `80,000 from the fund. Note that out of the investment you hold, 7.4 per cent is the gain and the remaining 92.6 per cent is the principal that you had invested. Here's the key idea: when you withdraw any money, the withdrawal shall be deemed to consist of the gains and the principal in this same proportion, for tax purposes. Therefore, of that `80,000, only `5,920 will be considered gains and will therefore be added to your taxable income. This makes an enormous difference in tax implications.

Pen Down / Health
Diabetic peoplePhysical activity for
With the changing lifestyles and the increase in the sedentary way of life, maintenance of physical
health and activity has become an emerging challenge. For blood glucose management and overall health in individuals with diabetes and pre-diabetes, it is important to adopt and maintain physical activity.
RECOMMENDED PhySICAL ACTIVITy fOR PEOPLE WITh DIABETESExercise is usually a planned and a structured form of physical activity that is carried out according to the needs of an individual. Physical activity includes
all movements that increase energy use. Exercise helps in improving the blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes and contributes in the overall well being of the individual. Asymptomatic individuals usually do not require a pre-exercise medical clearance prior to beginning, low or moderate intensity physical activity. An engagement of about 150 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous intensity activity weekly is recommended for adults with diabetes. This should be spread over at least three days a week, not having more than two consecutive days without activity.
Individuals who have the benefit of age and are more physically fit can indulge in short durations of about 75
minutes a day of vigorous intensity exercise. Children and adolescents who are suffering from type I or II diabetes should be engaged in moderate or vigorous intensity of aerobic activity for a minimum of 60 minutes a day. There has to be vigorous strengthening along with bone strengthening that should be included at least three days in a week.
On non-consecutive days, adults with diabetes should engage themselves in 2-3 sessions a week of resistance exercises. In case of type II diabetes, flexibility training and balance training are recommended for about 2-3 times in a week, for older adults who are suffering from diabetes. Yoga may be included based on the individual preferences to increase the flexibility, muscular strength and balance. It is advisable for people with diabetes or pre-diabetes to increase their total daily incidental physical activity in order to gain some additional health benefits.
Prolonged sitting should be strictly avoided in case of patients suffering from diabetes. In case of long sitting durations, they should be interrupted by regular intervals of more than 5 minutes bouts with sedentary overweight/obese populations and also in women with impaired glucose regulation. In case of adults with type II diabetes, the glycemic control is improved when prolonged sitting is interrupted with 15 minutes of post meal walking and three minutes of light walking and simple body weight resistance exercise every 30 minutes.
It is advisable that women, who have any symptoms of diabetes or pre-diabetes, should be involved in regular exercise and physical activity. Pregnant women with or at risk for gestational diabetes mellitus should be
NBCC News www.nbccindia.com

advised to engage in 20–30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on most or all days of the week.
LIfESTyLE MODIfICATIONS TO BE MADE WhEN SuffERING fROM DIABETESWith immense changes seen in the lifestyles of people these days, one-fourth of the people suffering from diabetes are not aware of their condition. The risks of chronically high blood sugar, heart attack, stroke, sight robbing eye diseases, kidney failure, and foot amputation are increasing. Adults suffer from the condition of pre-diabetes, elevated blood sugar levels which are just below the threshold of diabetes.
By making a few lifestyle modifications, the increased risk of diabetes can be prevented and in many cases delayed.Losing excess body fat: Being over-weight is a major risk factor causing diabetes. There is significant effect that is seen on having the risk of diabetes with subsequent weight loss. It is important to maintain the BMI within the normal range. following a low calorie diet: Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables shows reduced diabetes risk. Foods that are rich in trans-fats also called hydrogenated fat, saturated fat and sugar should be strictly avoided.Drink water: Intake of water should be high. Sugar sweetened beverages should be minimised as they cause obesity and diabetes. Move your body: Lack of physical activity increases the risk of causing diabetes. Exercise renders cells to be more sensitive to insulin. Brisk walking should be advocated. Stress less: The release of several hormones that increase blood sugar levels are seen to be triggered in response to stress. Mindful meditation improves the ability to cope with stress. Sleep well: Not getting the right amount of sleep is a cause of not only diabetes and obesity but many other alarming health issues. It is important to make sure
that your body is getting the required amount of sleep.
Behavioural changes and modifications also play an important role in the incorporation of physical activity and exercise in an individual’s life.
CONCLuSION For the overall management of health and the glycemic control in individuals with diabetes, it is important to include physical activity and exercise in one's regime. Precautions should be made in case of individuals with various kinds of health complications. Therefore, it becomes important that all the activities and the physical regime are tailored according to the specific needs and requirements of the individuals. With exercise it is important to not only bring about activity but also decrease the total amount of daily sedentary time. Behavioural changes and lifestyle modifications need to be made to adapt and follow a strict regime with physical activity and exercise. Till the time the individuals do not understand the need and the importance of including physical activity in their lives, it will be difficult.

PEOPLE CAPABILITy MATuRITy MODELMinistry of Housing and Urban Affairs vide its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the FY 2018-19 with NBCC have assigned a task of 'Assessment of NBCC Level in line with People Capability Maturity Model (PCMM)'. People Capability Maturity Model (PCMM) is an internationally acclaimed framework that
helps to address the critical people issues in the organisation. It consists of five maturity levels (ML) that establish successive foundations for continuously improving individual competencies, developing effective teams, motivating improved performance, and shaping the workforce to meet the organisation needs to accomplish its future business plans. Each maturity level is a well-defined evolutionary plateau that institutionalises new capabilities for developing the organisation’s workforce. The Maturity Level of an organisation is affirmed on the basis of compliance of different well defined HR Process Areas Goals.
Accordingly, Quality Council of India (QCI), an autonomous body under Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, GOI was engaged for assessment of HR Process Area Goal of NBCC as per the above People CMM framework for and up to the requirement of ML-3. QCI, therefore, conducted extensive Assessment involving surveys, one-to-one interviews, objective evidences verification, etc., during September-October 2018 on our randomly selected 161 employee across levels and locations of NBCC. Due to noteworthy support of these and other concerned Officers; QCI has assessed and qualified NBCC as Maturity Level–3 Company, which has also been duly approved by Board of Directors. It is further indicated that all efforts and endeavour will be made in times to come in this regard to achieve Level – 5 of People CMM with more contingent HRM practices.
