DID YOU HEAR? NO SCHOOL! Remember there is no school on Monday, October 13th, in observance of Columbus Day. We will see you on Tuesday, October 14th.

HALLOWEEN ASSEMBLY On Friday, 10/31/2014 from 9:15-10am, Walker School will have a Halloween assembly immediately following the costume parade. PM kindergarten students are welcome to attend accompanied by an adult, and adults of all ages are invited to join us as well! During this assembly, students will be taken on a magical journey presented by Balster Magic Productions, Inc. As the story “The Wizard's Apprentice” unfolds, apprentice Harriet Peabody not only learns about feats of magic and wizardry but also how developing good reading skills is the key to magic and life! Come enjoy astounding feats of magic as Harriet attempts to triumph over the naught wizard Lotar!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! Our Veterans Day assembly will be held on Monday, 11/11 at 2:00 pm. We’d love to acknowledge all veterans during the assembly. Please reach out to loved ones and community members and invite them to join us. Thank you! P.S. Children should plan to wear red, white and blue on the 11th.

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES: Our goal is to have a safe and fun environment so all students can celebrate and enjoy Halloween. Please follow these guidelines:

Costumes should be appropriate for an elementary school. No weapons of any kind may be brought to school, nor may the costumes depict blood or any type of violence; Hair dye will be allowed, however it must be applied at home (and try to avoid sprays/dyes that have a strong odor). Face paint may be used to enhance a costume, i.e. whiskers for a kitten or a black eye for a football player, but the entire face cannot be covered with paint. For safety reasons we need to be able to identify children quickly, if necessary. Costumes must be safe for students to walk up and down stairs. Costumes should be reasonable in size and decoration so that children can sit at their desks and go about the routines of their normal day (i.e. avoiding sumo wrestling costumes).

If you have questions regarding your child’s costume, contact the classroom teacher well in advance of Halloween.

SHARE THE CARE PROGRAM AT BROOKFIELD ZOO Please read the attached letter from Brookfield Zoo and share our sadness as we say good-bye to Anya, an amur leopard that Walker supported for many years. As you will see, we are now supporting another amur leopard, Kasha, who was born in 2010 and arrived at Brookfield Zoo in 2013. If you’re at the zoo, walk over to the exhibit to see him!

Walker School invites your family to participate in a voluntary, all school project that will promote family and community unity. Each of us plays a fundamental role in helping our children develop early literacy skills. Making reading fun will enhance a child’s curiosity and enthusiasm about reading. We invite you to work as a family to decorate a small pumpkin based on a character in a book chosen by your family. Talking about literature with your child will spark discussions about good and bad characters appearing in the book. Real or fake pumpkins can be decorated for the contest, but they cannot be carved. Small punctures are acceptable for some of the decorations. The pumpkins must be small sized, no bigger than 8”, in order to fit on the display shelves. Entries are not allowed to incorporate noise makers, sound machines, candles or any sources of light. In addition, please write your family name on a notecard along with two sentences explaining why your family chose that particular character in the book. All pumpkins are due by October 20th and will be displayed throughout the school before Halloween and during our upcoming Family Literacy Night, scheduled for October 29th 6-7pm. Parent volunteers will be present outside on October 20th during morning drop-off to collect the pumpkins. Ms. Griffin will be outside to collect the pumpkins for the afternoon Kindergarten class. Several examples have been provided below.

!Thank you in advance for your participation. !!!Nicole Griffin MRC Director Walker School
