This report is based on the institutional visit conducted under the state government

initiative, 'Walk With Scholar' on 19, 20 and 21 of January 2019. The report shall look

into the activities, programmes and classes conducted at the various and numerous

institutions visited during the above mentioned period of time.

The outcome gained as well as received by each student individual shall also be

discussed. The variety of experiences and exposures the students underwent have truly

helped in producing a deeper understanding about the educational facilities within the

state. A better appreciation of the specializations and facilities provided in each

institution on a number of various subjects have surely increased the students' interest

    for pursuing knowledge.

    DAY 1

    KERALA SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS

On the first day of the journey i.e. on 19th of January 2019, we started the journey from

the college campus and arrived at the Kerala School of Mathematics, Kannamangalam,

    Kozhikode

  • Walk With a Scholar – Activity Report 2018-19 22

As we arrived at KSOM, we were taken to the library where Mr. Syam welcomed us

and briefly talked about the institute and its functions. There we were first shown the

reading room and then we were led to a hall where there stood several boards with

chart-depictions of the history of mathematics in Kerala till date. There were details

about the long journey of mathematical development in Kerala. The history of

astronomy was also briefly depicted. After visiting the upper floor the library too, we

    came to the seminar hall.

At the seminar hall, Mr. Sreejith, Dr. Vijay Raja and Mr. Sandeep talked about the

prospects of mathematical studies in India. This was followed by a short tea break. After

the break, Mr. Syam concisely concluded the session.

KERALA VETINARY AND ANIMAL SCIENCE UNIVERISTY

From KSOM, we headed to Kerala Vetinary and Animal Science University. As our bus

entered the university campus, we looked for a calm and isolated place for having lunch.

After having the lunch that we had bought from our place, we went to the museum. The

museum was basically a hall located inside the university block.

There were several biological remains exhibited inside. There were the skeletal

residues of organisms like ox, sheep, goat, dog, pig, snake, hippopotamus, ostrich etc. The

museum keeper was engaged at assembling the bones of an ostrich. The museum also

had a collection of formalin specimens of the visceral and vestigial organs and buccal

cavities of several organisms. From the museum, we came out to have a look at the

numerous farms within the university campus. There farms and breeding centers of

several domestic animals. We came across a poultry farm, an emu farm, a pig farm, a

cattle farm and an industrial goat farm. Though it was really stinky around in there, the

sight was a real feast for the eyes. After our visit at the farms, we had tea and biscuit at

the university canteen. By dusk, we left for the training center at SIGN Philosphere.

    Camp @ SIGN Philosphere

As night fell we had reached the training center. Since it was night and dark around, we

could make nothing of the place we were at. But it was really cold and every now and

then we felt a chilled breeze embrace us. Woolen clothes tugged in our backpacks came

out. We were 33 in all and were allotted three villas to stay, interestingly named Jasmine

villa, Lily Villa and Lavender Villa.

After a quick shower, we rushed to the dining hall and had dinner. Post dinner we got

back to our respective rooms. Long hours of travelling had taken its toll on us and drifted

    to sleep quickly.

    Motivation camp inauguration

New initiative under the collegiate education organized two day camp for second

As the sun rose on the second day, we felt the bliss and calmness of the place we were at.

At the break of dawn, we decided to take a walk around and explore the piece of land.

We learned that there were several villas like ours where students came for various

purposes. The climate was too cold for a shower, yet we had it. As we were having our

breakfast, we were informed that a motivational session will be conducted at 9:30 am by

renowned speaker and trainer Mr. Bishar.

Though it was a daylong session from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, we never knew how time flew

away. Mr. Bishar very much productively engaged us in several activities that required

both mental and physical inclination. The session was aimed at building a sense of

confidence and indomitable will power in each of us. Though the session began in a

formal and typical way of an usual motivational workshop, it soon gathered momentum.

Several activities which involved physical movements were executed. By the end of the

day, he was able to bring even the most glossophobiac among us to speak up without

    being asked to.

After the session, we had a short tea break and left to visit the nearby river of Kabani. We

had a great time there, splashing about and playing in the water. The water was crystal

clear and cold. After spending about an hour or more, we returned to our training center.

As we reached our respective rooms, we all freshened ourselves up and set out to spent

    the night out.

We gathered some firewood and went to barren patch of land, where we planned to set a

camp fire. As the fire started the blazing, the sharp chill of the night was no more felt. It

seemed as though the heat of the fire had warmed up our spirits which were earlier cold

in the night. We grouped ourselves into two and began to play the of 'Andakshari'. The

teachers also joined us and it turned out to be a lasting night. We spent hours there,

warming ourselves by the fire and singing our hearts out. As the night grew colder and

the firewood burned out, we had to call it a day, indeed a great day.

    DAY 3

As the dawn of the third day broke, our rooms were filled with scuttle and rush

for bathing and dressing. It was the last day of our camp and we had to leave Wayanad

and reach Kozhikode. There were long queues in front of every washroom and the only

available mirror. Everyone was busy bathing, dressing and packing. Each had one or the

other stuff that refused to go inside the backpacks and interesting someone else would

come up with a solution. Three days of camping together had given us a valuable lesson

    of harmony and fraternity.

After breakfast, we boarded our bus and set out to Kozhikode. We had our lunch at

Kozhikode and then we went to the fourth institution of our visit - Indian Institute of

    Management, Kozhikode.

    INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT

As we entered the gates of IIM-K, we asked to get our identity cards out. We got

down at the entrance of the main block, where there was a great statue of Arjuna,

standing on one knee and aiming with his arrow and bow. There was plank at the

bottom of the statue which said 'Arise Arjuna'.

We were led to the library by a security officer. We arrived at the Indian Business

Museum, which was located at the center yard of the library, separated by walls of glass.

The museum was of three storeys. There we were welcomed by the museum keeper,

who described to us what really a business museum will have and how it stood different

from the other kinds of museums. She told us about how this museum worked and what

to find in each nook and corner. As we strolled around the museum, we saw several

boards that detailed the growth of trade and commerce in India since the ancient period.

The origin of trade in the very primitive stages of barter system till the digitalization and

globalization of Indian economy were given in a chronological order. India's

advancement in fields of retailing business, shipping, air transport and space technology

were depicted. Furthermore, the lives and journeys of several business tycoons based in

India were also exhibited which include J.R.D Tata, Jamnalal Bajaj, Mukesh Ambani, Seth

    Shiv Narayan Birla etc.

As mentioned earlier, the museum had miniature models of the satellites and

rocket missions India had launched to outer space; the PSLV and GSLV. There was a mini

theatre that showed a five minute long film that talks about India's advancements in the

field of aero space manufacturing, satellite launching, and telecasting etc.

From the museum, we headed straight to the Kozhikode beach. The sun had

already set, but we enjoyed the night out in the beach. After having spend some time at

the sea shore, we boarded the bus for one last time; it was time for us to head back

home. To enjoy our last moments together, we began playing 'Andakshari' once again.

We had our dinner from a hotel at Ramanattukara. Finally, one by one, each of got down

their places on our way from Kozhikode to Manjeri.
