This walk explores the beautiful floral parish of St Martin’s and should take about an hour and a half to two hours. With some steep inclines, it is not for those who have difficulty walking. ST MARTIN’S CHURCH At the entrance is ‘La Gran’mere du Chimquiere’. Today, a garland of flowers is placed on the statue by couples marrying in the church. GUERNSEY FARMING The Guernsey Cow dates back to 960 AD and was created by monks of Mont St Michel who crossed two French breeds to come up with the creature we know and love today. Renowned for their calm and gentle nature, they produce superb quality milk. FONTAINES AND ABREUVEURS Fontaines and abreuveurs are another feature to look out for. Some are a simple trough while others include both a trough for the cattle and a fontaine from which locals would collect their drinking water. MOULIN HUET Renoir fell for this lovely area when he visited Guernsey in 1883 and painted a series of landscapes. Victor Hugo, too, enjoyed visiting Moulin Huet and picnicking in the area with his friends. THE FORMER SAUMAREZ MILL Coming up the hill, you come across the remains of an old mill, one of the many that existed in Guernsey for the grinding of corn. This was connected to the de Sausmarez family whose surname can be traced back as far as the earliest surviving records in Guernsey. SAUSMAREZ MANOR Dating back to the late 12th century it has been altered, reduced and added to over the years. The front of the building is a fine example of Queen Anne Colonial architecture and was built between 1714 and 1718 at the bequest of Sir Edmund Andros, the first Governor of New York.
