Award 2006. Invited participant in the Royal Society Discussion Meeting on the Neurobiology of Drug

Addiction: February 25-26, 2008, London, England. PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS: My research program combines behavioral pharmacology and brain imaging (using PET, MRI) to study the mechanisms of action of cocaine that lead to its high abuse potential. Furthermore, my group is studying variables related to the environment (e.g., social housing conditions, alternative reinforcers), the pharmacology (e.g., D3-selective compounds, DAT uptake blockers) and the organism (e.g., individual traits, dominant vs. subordinate monkeys) in an effort to better understand the factors that mediate the reinforcing effects of cocaine. These studies emphasize translational research and have extended several clinical observations related to brain changes, neuroplasticity and drug addiction.

Abridged version of Teaching Portfolio [complete list available] PERSONAL STATEMENT INCLUDING PHILOSOPHY ON EDUCATION AND GOALS: The teaching of future physicians and scientists is an extremely important job, for which I take very seriously. The most important aspect of teaching medical students and graduate students is to convey a passion for the subject matter, that is not simply rote memorization and didactic instruction. It is also imperative to convey the message that you, as an instructor, want them to learn this material – students know that I will stay as long as necessary after class to explain something that is not clear to them, that I will provide them resource material on a subject matter that will further their development and that they can call or e-mail me and receive a response to their query. An additional quality of an effective educator is to enjoy teaching. If you are enthusiastic about the subject matter, it can only facilitate the learning process.
