The start of something amazing• Founded in 1834 in Wake Forest,

North Carolina by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina (though the University disaffiliated itself from the Convention in the mid 1980’s, the Baptist heritage remains important), the school moved to Winston-Salem in 1956 through a land and financial grant by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

• The main campus of Wake Forest University is called the Reynolda Campus, and sits on 340 acres. The School of Medicine is located on what is called the Bowman Gray Campus, and is in downtown Winston-Salem.

Dr. Samuel Wait, Wake Forest’s first president.

President Harry S Truman broke ground on the Winston-Salem campus.

A great place to live: Calling Winston-Salem home

• Winston-Salem has the variety and vibrant social life of a large metropolis, but with the intimate feel of a smaller southern city.

• Enjoy dozens of unique restaurants. Walk and play in one of the numerous parks. See a play. Go to the movies. Attend a concert. It’s all waiting for you just a short drive from campus!

• With Greensboro International Airport (GSO) just half an hour away, and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) an hour away, you are never too far from home.

What is a Demon Deacon?!• The history of the Demon Deacon blends tradition, sports, and religion. It

goes back to the Roaring Twenties when a school reporter gave the football team the nickname "Demon Deacons" after a "devilish" win over the Trinity Blue Devils-now known as the Duke Blue Devils. At the time, Wake Forest was the only college in the state without a mascot. In 1941 Jack R. Baldwin ('43) took on a fraternity brother's dare and dressed up as he thought an old-time Baptist deacon would: top hat, tuxedo, and carrying a black umbrella. The football crowd loved it, and a tradition was born. In 1980 the Demon Deacon evolved into a complete costume with the large deacon head.

Then…

…And now!
