By Elizabeth Smith

On Ash Wednesday, I was mentally congratulating myself

on starting out Lent well. I had fasted correctly, reflected

on Jesus, and felt good about my plans for Prayer, Fasting,

and Almsgiving. It looked like I might actually have a

successful Lent this year!

At that moment, the small breakfast I had eaten flashed in

front of my eyes. Highlighted was the piece of sausage that

had been the main part of my meal.

Wait a second . . . Sausage. Meat. MEAT!!!! I couldn’t

believe it! I had NOT fasted correctly—I had eaten meat on

Ash Wednesday, in a year when I was most determined to

please God. Oh my goodness! How disappointing.

In the past, a stumble like this at the beginning of Lent

might have completely derailed me. I might have asked

myself, “What is the point?! You already ruined your

‘record’ on the first day of Lent!” And then gone on to half

-heartedly finish out the rest of Lent, not worrying too

much if I “blew it” again.

This year, something was different. First of all, I realized

that my mistake did not ruin anything. It did not taint the

rest of my Lenten practices. Just as "God's tender mercies

are renewed each day" when it comes to sin, so it also is

with mistakes.

Parishioner Elizabeth Smith

(continued from cover)

Interestingly, as the image of that rogue piece of

sausage was flashing before my eyes, I also had a

strong sense that Jesus was with me. You might

think that I felt judged, or rebuked by Him.

Certainly, that's often what we fear. Instead, I felt

exactly the opposite.

I felt love: Jesus' love, delight, and affection.

It is probably no coincidence that the Holy Spirit

brought to mind my mistake just as I was mentally

congratulating myself. I might even have been

secretly a little bit smug. Did he show me my

mistake to torment me? To throw me off course or

to bring me shame?

Not at all. In fact, in that moment, it felt as if

Jesus was smiling at me . . . nudging me . . .

laughing with me . . . teasing me, even! Just as a

big brother or affectionate Father might.

How great is that!? We do not have 'a high priest

who cannot sympathize with our

weaknesses' (Hebrews 4:15). We have 'a friend who

is closer than a brother' (Prov. 18:24). Jesus delights

in each one of us always—and He does not squash

us when we mess up. Especially when we are doing

our best, but also when we are failing and wearied

with trying.

Since Ash Wednesday, I have continued to mess

up. A slip of the tongue here, or failure to be

charitable there. Ugh! I am so flawed. But this

year, I am not angry with myself, or interested in

throwing away the baby with the bath water.

Instead, I am looking for my friend. I am looking

to Jesus to lift me up and help me start again. And

he does. Every time.

‘For he who began a good work in us is faithful to

complete it’(Philippians 1:6).

PRAY THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY in our Divine Mercy Chapel, this

Sunday at 3 pm. A great addition to your Lenten devotions!

THE COLLEGE/MILITARY OUTREACH PROGRAM NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Donations of snack-size treats and school supplies will be collected in Menniti

Hall from Saturday March 25 through Sunday, April 2 for the Spring 2017

shipment of care packages to our college students and military personnel

registered in our program. SUGGESTED DONATIONS: rosaries and rosary

purses, snack packs of chips, pretzels, granola bars, cookies, crackers, candy

bars, microwave popcorn, ramen noodles, toaster pastries, pens, pencils,

highlighters, stationary, note cards, reading materials suitable for both college

and military individuals. Please do not donate any products that contain

peanuts or peanut products due to allergies! Financial donations, used to

purchase additional items and defray shipping costs, are especially needed.

Forms will be available for registrants for the Spring 2017 shipment. If you

registered in the Fall of 2016, you do not need to register again. Questions?

Contact Donna ([email protected], 329-6405).

CHILDREN'S EASTER PARTY is Saturday, April 8, from 10 am to noon for all

children ages 3-12.There’s an egg hunt by age group, plus crafts, games, and

snacks! The egg hunt will be outdoors if the weather cooperates; indoors , if

not. We do need children to sign up in advance so we can plan properly, and we

invite parents to volunteer to contribute snacks. There is a sign-up sheet in

Menniti Hall, beginning this weekend, and you can also sign-up online at

www.steas.net/childrens-easter-party/

MORNING FAITH MATTERS JOIN US! On Wednesday, March 22, at 9:30

am in the Bayley Conference Room, for The Bible and the Virgin Mary. Please

jump in; there’s no need to have attended previous sessions. We’ll wrap up our

discussion of the dogma of the Assumption of Mary with its history in the early

Church and how it is celebrated in liturgy today. We’ll also learn why we can

call Mary the “Co-Redemptrix,” "Mediatrix,” and “Advocate” without

undermining Christ’s role as the “one mediator between God and men” (1 Tim

2:5). Questions? Please contact Mel Lee ([email protected]).

FOR SPRINGTIME PLANNING: JOIN OUR NEW PROGRAMS! We start a four-

week Lenten Scripture study on March 29 with The Passion, featuring Livonia

SpirJito, from Catholic Way Bible Study. Following Divine Mercy Sunday, on

April 26, we will begin a brand-new catechetical program, “Who am I to

Judge?” See the flyer on page 6 of this bulletin for details!

STUDENTS—NEED SERVICE HOURS? Two great opportunities coming up!

Your help is needed at the Confirmation Breakfast on April 1, and the

Confirmation Reception on April 25. Sign up with your CCD teachers, and they

will get your contact information to the Confirmation hospitality coordinators.

THAT MAN IS YOU! This ministry meets faithfully on Saturday mornings at

6:30 or Tuesdays at 9 am. Yes, it’s a multi-year program, and this session

started in January, but men are welcome to join the group at any time—and

they do! If you want to see why they find TMIY so valuable, stop by this week

as study of The Spirit of Nazareth continues.

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK—We wish to thank Myers Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, Ltd. for sponsoring an ad in our weekly bulletin.

CAN YOU HELP? Emergencies

are bound to happen, and a

defibrillator can save lives. We

have one located in our café,

but with a busy facility the size

of ours, it would be advisable to have a second

unit in another location. If you would like to

consider donating a second defibrillator to the

parish, please call the office (697-2614).
