In the Firehouse GalleryLocal Art at an Exceptional ValueNovember 27 - December 28, 2013

Artist members of theWaimea Arts Council are enthusiasticallypresenting their artwork at the Firehouse Gallery in their annualHoliday season exhibition of "Local Art at an ExceptionalValue". The showwill beginNovember 27 and continue throughthe month of December.

There is artwork in every medium, including painting, drawing,photography, jewelry, and finearts. Noneof theworksondisplayin the Main Gallery are priced above $250 -- a fine opportunityto obtain an extraordinary piece of art for a gift or for your home.

Also available at very reasonable prices are prints and cards,some with a Holiday theme, by some of the Island's most talentdartists and artisans. Come in and buy something beautiful!

Also during themonth ofDecember, come in and have cocoa andcookies on December 7, the day of the Annual TwighlightChristmas Parade in Waimea. The gallery will be open extrahours that day - from 9:30 am to 8 pm. We need extra volunteersto docent, as it will be a very busy day. Please sign up.

The Firehouse Gallery is located in the red building across fromWaimea Chevron, at the stoplight at 67-1202 Mamalahoa Hwy.and Lindsey Road in Waimea. Parking is in the rear of thecomplex. Hours are 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Wednesday throughSaturday. Call 887-1052 for information.

Coming up...New Member show in January

Open to all who have joined Waimea Arts Council as a newparticipating member since October 1, 2012. The theme of theshowis to introduceyouandyour art to thecommunity.Theusualrules regarding size, etc, apply, with the following specialconditions:

1. Bring up to 4 pieces per artist, but be prepared to have one ormore not hung, depending on space.

2. Youmust provide a brief biography to accompany your work:100 to 140 words about who you are and why you do what youdo.

3. If at all possible, include a digital photograph of yourself toaccompany the biography.

Send the biography and photo to samcudney@gmail.com. Bringyourwork for exhibit on Jauary4between10 amand3pm. If anyquestions, contact Sam at that same email. See you then!

From the Board...This month's column is from Lauren Avery, President

To the members of the Waimea Arts Council &Firehouse Gallery:On the eve of the 40th Anniversary of the Waimea Arts Counciland the Firehouse Gallery, we reflect on the years gone by sincethe beginning of the oldest art organization in Waimea and thethousands of art creations that have graced the FirehouseGalleryin this historic county building. One can feel the excitement ofthose early years and know that it was the dedication of manyvolunteers, in particular people like Dolly Loo, Judy Folk,Wendy Roerig and Jay West, who have made the difference inkeeping the doors open and the artmoving into homes around theworld.

Today is a new beginning with a new team of volunteers and anew burst of excitement as the Waimea Arts Council and theFirehouse Gallery continues its dedication to promoting the arts,encouraging artists and stimulating community interest andparticipation in creative art for all ages. With the Waimea ArtsCouncil’s 40th Anniversary year ~ 2014 ~ looming, the newvolunteers and the entiremembership have their work cut out forthem! The goal is to end with a “smashingly successful year” atthe end of 2014.

Since the start of the new fiscal year on October 1st, boardmeetings have included the Firehouse Gallery committeemembers because it seemed beneficial to work together towardourmutual goals. Discussions have centered onways to improvethe visibility and community awareness of what is offered byWAC and at the Firehouse Gallery and to improve art sales,ensuring that the organization is self-sustaining for the next 40years.

In light of this new, necessarymandate, changes have beenmadeto the Gallery membership class structure and to the artistvolunteer hour requirements. Information about these changeswill be sent to all participating artists, so it can be more fullyexplained. These new initiatives are effective beginning January1, 2014.

A new beginning deserves new initiatives ~

• The Waimea Arts Council recently received a $500 grantaward from Young Brothers, Ltd. to purchase 5 new digitalcameras for a new photography class for our youth who areinterested in learning the art of photography. See article innewsletter

• The Waimea Arts Council, along with the Firehouse Galleryartists and friends, is holding its first annual HolidayCelebration on Thursday, December 12th 5pm – 8pm atHistoric Spencer House. It’s a Potluck affair and will be alively evening of “chit” and “chatter” and catching up withone another. Itwill also be a time to let us knowof your ideasfor the 40th Anniversary Celebration year of the WaimeaArts Council.

• A new vision for “remodeling ٠۰ refreshing ٠۰ redoing” theFirehouse Gallery space is in the works. Your ideas areneeded to help the Gallery Committee develop just the rightplan for this new vision. To have your ideas considered,please send them to SamCudney, Gallery Curator, or to anycommittee member.

The brink of the 40th is here! We hope you are as excited as weare andwill lend your ideas and your “hand” tomake this comingyear “a smashing success”! A joyous and peaceful holidayseason to all!

Out and about..A big congratulations to the following WAC artists who havereceived recognition recently:

Hawaii Nei Show

Several WAC artists had pieces accepted for the Hawaii Neishow which ran through the month of November at the WailoaCenter in Hilo. This show is dedicated to the native species ofHawaii Island. Congratulations to Barbara Schaefer, SusieCysewski, Ann Guth and Denise Ulrich.

Barbara's photos will also be shown for one day at the"PalilaPalooza" event at Imiloa Astronomy Center on Dec. 7th.

Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts

As a follow up to the 29th Annual Helen M. Cassidy MemorialJuried Art Show, the Board of Directors of the Hawaii StateFoundation on Culture and the Arts voted at their board ofdirector's meeting on November 20 topurchase Julie McCue's watercolorpainting, "Eucalyptus Bark".

Thisworkwill becomeapart of theirArt inPublic Places Collection, created tohumanize our building environment andincrease access to the visual arts. Thecollection is displayed at over 500 sites instate buildings throughout Hawaii,including airports, libraries, and schools.

Workshops and ClassesThe Board of Directors of the Waimea Arts Council has set twopriorities for the coming year—increasing our revenue streamand becoming more visible in the community. As Chair of theCommittee for Workshops/Classes, I’m focusing on the secondpriority, which is closely related to our mission as a non-profitorganization. I believe that success in this area will ultimatelylead to increased income as well. For any of the projectsdescribedbelowtobesuccessful,wewill needyour involvement.Please think about how you could contribute your talents!

Photography for Youth

WAChas received a small grant fromYoungBrothers in supportof the project: Introduction to Photography & Principles ofDesign for Youth. The funds will allow us to purchase severaldigital cameras for children to use in this class. We anticipatebeginning this project shortly after the first of the year. Our firstmeeting will be with children and parents—an early eveningmeeting at Tutu’s House. This will be followed by two hands-onsessions with the children at the Gallery and some sort ofcelebrationof their accomplishments. Tohelpwith thephoto anddesign classes you don’t need to knowa lot about photography—just a willingness to workwith children to increase enjoyment ofand appreciation for art.

Monthly Art Series at Tutu’s House

Tutu’s House is interested in partnering with us to presentmonthly art-related sessions for community members. Theyhave a wonderful meeting room for us to use and an extensivesubscriber list for their newsletter. Wehave the artists. Programscould be focused on art appreciation, learning about a particularartist, how you do your art, or a hands-on session withparticipants. We would like to schedule a regular time monthly,beginning in January. Tutu’s has tentatively suggested the firstThursday of the month at 5 pm or 5:30, with sessions scheduledfor 60 or 90 minutes. I’m looking for a volunteer to kick off thisseries! It’s also possible to have a longer “hands-on” session,perhaps on a Saturday. Tutu’s is very interested in some hands-on sessions!

Gallery Workshops/Classes

In addition to the projects described above, we hope to haveworkshops/classes in the gallery—as soon as we get thebunkhouse cleaned out and re-configured. Please let me knowwhat would be of interest—either what you’d like to attend orwhat you’d like to offer. We have such a talented group ofmembers; we’d be foolish not to tap into their expertise.
