17 October 2014

On 27 March 2014, we celebrated the close of

our hugely successful ‘Extending P♀sitive Relations’ regional project at the Ramada Hotel, Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast, funded under Measure 1.1 of the European Union’s PEACE III Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

In March 2011, TWN as Lead Partner was awarded £2,929,058.91 to deliver the second

phase of the P♀sitive Relations Project. The project was delivered locally through 23 partners situated throughout NI and the border region of Ireland. We provided a range of activities and skills building for women including personal development, confidence building, peace and reconciliation and political skills training as well as opportunities for networking and building relationships at local and regional levels on both cross community and cross border bases. This innovative, empowering project saw over 2,919 women of all ages participate in various accredited courses.

We were overwhelmed with the response to the call for award recipients and would like to thank all the judges who kindly gave up of their time to adjudicate. Nominees, winners and project completers were delighted to receive their awards and certificates from the

Junior Ministers, Jennifer McCann and Jonathan Bell, guest speaker Janet Gray, MBE and Lorraine McCourt, Director Joint Technical Secretariat, SEUPB.

Positive Driver of Cross-Community Relations – A woman who embraced the chance to develop relationships across the community divide, she has forged lasting relations that have endured and will continue to endure long after the project.

Reconciliation – A woman who embraced and excelled in Peace and Reconciliation courses. She may have further developed her community, enhanced her career or undertaken further studies in peace and reconciliation.

Women in Political Life – A woman who used the knowledge gained to ensure women have a voice: she may have advanced within her community, taken up local or regional concern issues, gone on to become a Board Member on a community Board, school board etc., or furthered her own political career or actively pursued a role or career in politics.

All-round Achiever – A woman who embraced all elements of the project; she will have undertaken the majority of the training and immersed herself in dialogue activities, cross-community events and study groups and/or have undertaken a personal journey of change.

TWN is amazed to announce that £1,000 were raised for Macmillan Cancer Support at our Extending Positive Relations Awards Gala held at Ramada Plaza Hotel on 27 March 2014 in memory of Paula Heath, a very courageous woman who passed away on 6th Dec 2012 after 6 years of battling cancer.

Presenting the cheque on behalf of TWN are Paula's daughter Laoise (11) who selected Macmillan as the receiving charity as the Macmillan nurses were so kind and good to her mum. With Laoise are her two sisters Naoimh (not pictured) and Eimear O'Caoilte, who is also a member of TWN staff. Paula was a highly sought after caterer and received many compliments for her delicious catering for TWN over the years.

Representing Macmillan is Claire Brown, New Business Manager: 'It was a pleasure to meet the team at TWN, and receive their fantastic donation in memory of their colleague and friend Paula. The generosity of all who attended the Awards Gala has been astounding and I thank them as well as

thanking Paula's daughters and family for choosing Macmillan as their nominated charity. We receive no government support therefore this donation is particularly welcomed and will make a difference to people and their families across N. Ireland."

Over 200 women attended the Awards Gala, at which TWN hosted the charity raffle with prizes such as a hotel stay at the Ramada Plaza Hotel, perfumes, chocolates, and wine. TWN would like to particularly thank Amanda Kitchingham, TWN Board Member, who volunteered her time to organise the Gala as well as donated many of the raffle prizes. Additionally, TWN would like to recognise and thank the Kilcooley Women's Centre which donated a gift of £220.

Macmillan Cancer Support knows how a cancer diagnosis can affect every part of your life. It's not only patients who live with cancer, Macmillan also helps carers, families and communities. Get the support, energy and inspiration you need, so you can start

feeling like yourself again. Call 0808 808 00 00 or visit macmillan.org.uk.

Both phases of the Positive Relations Project benefitted over 5,000 women from 23 local community and women's organisations from across NI and the six border counties. The Positive Relations Project was supported by the EU's PEACE III Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

'WOMEN ARE THE ULTIMATE VICTIMS OF

VIOLENCE BUT THEY ARE ALSO THE ULTIMATE

SOURCES OF CHANGE.'

- JUDY CHENG HOPKINS, UN ASSISTANT

SECRETARY GENERAL

TWN successfully approached OFMDFM with the idea of the Gender Equality Unit sponsoring six grassroots women delegates to attend the GLOBAL SUMMIT TO END

SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN CONFLICT in order to bring back learning to Northern Ireland.

Objectives of attending the Summit were:

• Ensure active and equal participation of society, economy, peace building and

government (Gender Equality Strategy 2006-2016).

• Take all appropriate measures to ensure women, on equal terms with men without any discrimination, have the opportunity to represent their Governments at the international level and to participate in the work of international organisations (CEDAW).

• Compile a report of the outcomes of the summit from a NI context.

For the full report and recommendations, list of sessions attended, and delegate profiles, visit our website.

Clear communication Understanding your personal communication style can help prevent and resolve conflicts. During this short course, participants examine their communication strengths and weaknesses and how they can better communicate with those of different styles.

Conflict resolution Managing conflict often is seen as a very negative experience, when in fact conflict is also the source of positive change. Through this workshop, participants examine their own communication styles and how they can use their strengths to navigate the difficulties of conflict and help resolve situations.

Leadership and management According to the Institute of Leadership and Management’s (ILM) Vision 2020 report, the top skills managers are seeking for themselves and for their peers are:

1. Clear communication 2. Effective planning 3. Managing conflict

With these trends in mind, we have completely redesigned our training suite to focus on developing these skills in leaders and managers from level 2 – 7. TWN is proud to be one of two ILM approved centres to deliver Level 7 programmes in NI.

Leading the Way – ILM Level 2 builds confidence in leading, teambuilding skills, time & stress management skills.

Core Skills Leadership – ILM Level 3 focuses on developing leadership

capability, understanding conflict, and communication skills in presenting.

Effective Leadership – ILM Level 5 deepens understanding on what it means to be a leader and manager by using 360 assessments, exploring ways to manage people and conflict, and focusing on developing good management communication skills.

Change Leadership – ILM Level 7 for senior managers is a truly vocational qualification in that participants undertake a data driven enquiry with their own stakeholders that serves as a basis for a high-level business case. Level 7 focuses on change leadership theory and stakeholder engagement. Please see page 6 for more details.

Mentoring and coaching Get practical experience in mentoring or coaching and learn what it takes to be an effective coach in your workplace. Workshop topics are available at NVQ Level 3 and 5.

Understanding good practice in workplace coaching

Analyse, assess, and improve your mentoring skills

Using mentoring as a powerful development tool

Mentor roles and responsibilities

Organisational development As a large network organisation, we are committed to providing support to our members in the areas of board governance, personnel management and recruitment, and financial management. Please contact us to find out how we can help you find innovative solutions to your problems.

Our courses in peace and reconciliation are on the Qualification and Credit Framework and can be tailored for groups across the international community.

OCR Level 2 Certificate in Reconciliation – provides an introduction to conflict management and the process of reconciliation.

OCR Level 3 Certificate in Peace and Reconciliation – focuses on 4 topics: conflict management techniques, the value of diversity, how to empower communities, and the process of peace and reconciliation.

OCR Level 3 Diploma in Peace and Reconciliation – covers 2 additional units in facilitation as a means to conflict resolution and the effects of trauma for a full level 3 qualification.

Personal development Confidence and assertiveness are the foundation blocks of many personal development courses. Our programme is unique because participants first build their confidence in a peer group setting prior to being guided through a professional qualification recognised internationally. The programme aims is to develop active and engaged citizens who have a voice and can bring about community change while at the same time enhancing their employability.
