months and I want to take a moment to tip my hat to the professional Senior
Services staff, dedicated volunteers, and fellow HBCOA Board members. All of
these people continue to amaze me with their tireless efforts in service to the
senior community. Thank you for everything you do.
This month, The HBCOA is busy preparing for our annual Senior Saturday

Greetings Friends,
Thank you to all who attended our celebration of the 1st Anniversary of the
Senior Center! It was a delightful party with 350 guests in attendance. It was
an excellent way to mark our first year of success and pave the way into the
year ahead. We had generous sponsors whom I’d like to thank: Greater
Newport Physicians, MemorialCare Medical Group, Hoag, Huntington Beach
Lions Club, and Surfcity Rotary. This event would not have been possible
without all our wonderful community supporters and volunteers whom we
appreciate so much.
We are happy to announce that our next Dinner & Dance will be on Friday,
October 13th. Please join us for a Spooktacular night from 7-10pm. Tickets can
be purchased at the front desk. HBCOA members tickets are $20 per person
and non-members are $25 per person. We are dying to see you there!
It is beyond exciting to continue to grow and add new classes into our daily
schedule! For the fall session we have made some great additions. First, is a
new volunteer led class called Traditional Hawaiian Appliqué and Quilting.
This class will teach you how to make a beautiful pillow using only your hands
and fingers, no fancy sewing machines needed. For those interested in foreign
language we have added a Spanish and French class taught by Portal
Languages. Also because of its popularity in summer, a new session of Making
Your Memoir class has been added starting in October. All fall registration will
begin on Tuesday, August 8th at 9:00 a.m.. You can register in person or online
at hbsands.org.
Thank you to all of you who have made our 1st year a success! We have
enjoyed many great moments in this beautiful new center thus far
and are excited to enjoy many more in the future.
Sincerely,
Kristin Martinez

Membership Renewals It’s hard to believe that we’re coming up on 1 year of membership for quite a few of our members. With that being said here are the steps to the renewal process:
1. You'll receive a letter in the mail about 1 month prior to your membership expiring. The letter will have your specific renewal date.
2. You will receive an email 1-2 weeks prior to your membership expiring.
3. To renew you will need to come in and complete a new membership application. This is because our policies & procedures may have been updated, your contact info may have changed, and we need a new waiver/release signed each year.
Small Group Sampler Investing in an inexpensive membership to Hoag Health
and Wellness Pavilion gives you access to a state-of-the-art
fitness center, a supportive environment, a welcoming team,
and now the opportunity to enroll in Small Group Sampler -- a
complimentary 4-week program offered exclusively to
members (a $50 value)! The program blends the individualized
coaching of personal training with the dynamics of a group
class environment, with a maximum of only 8 participants at
any one time. It offers the opportunity to work with a personal
trainer at no cost, be introduced to the accessory fitness
equipment in the Pavilion, and learn correct exercise technique
for safety. All sessions are led by one of the Always In
Motion advanced trainers, and allow you to sample our small
group programs -- Total Body TRX, Deep Stretch, and Small
Group Circuit -- to see which best fits your needs. Let's get
moving!
In The News With summer in full swing, consider taking your workout outside. Research has shown that spending time outdoors seems to have
benefits for physical and mental health. Some benefits of exercising outside include:
1. Your vitamin D levels will go up: Studies are suggesting this vitamin may have protective effects against everything from osteoporosis to cancer to depression to heart attacks and stroke.
2. Increase in mood: Light tends to elevate people's mood. Physical activity has been shown to relax and cheer people up, so if being outside replaces inactive pursuits with active ones, it might also mean more smiles.
3. You may get more exercise: Making it a goal to get outside more generally means less time in front of the television and computer and more time walking, biking, gardening, cleaning up the yard, and doing other things that put the body in motion
