Trick or treat! Excitement grew as little ghosts and goblins entered Shady Oaks ready to show off their costumes and gather sweet treats. With residents waiting outside their doors, trick or treaters paraded up and down each hall. "Thank you" and "Happy Halloween!" could be heard throughout the building and smiles were in abundance everywhere you went. Resident Colene raved, "I loved it! The kids were so cute and I had a lot of fun. One of my favorite costumes was the little rodeo clowns!" We love this beautiful time of year with the trees turning colors and leaves falling to the ground. Having a full house of children, even if only for an hour, is certainly the cherry on top to round out the autumn season. Thanks so much to everyone who participated in our very fun and very busy evening!

Apple of My Eye Crisp autumn air and a bit of sunshine accompanied Shady Oaks residents to their yearly Community Orchard visit in Fort Dodge. Rich fall colors welcomed everyone as they entered the gift shop to enjoy a slice of home-made pie topped with vanilla or cinnamon ice cream. The sweet smell of the Orchard gift shop is welcoming and encourages you to venture through all their goodies. They have various items for sale such as salsa, candy, gift items, and of course, apples! After purchases were made, residents viewed the scarecrow displays outside that were assembled by area businesses. Deb Zenor,
Life Enrichment, commented, “Residents really enjoyed looking at the different scarecrows. They were cute and very well done!” Peggy O. can’t wait to return, “They truly have THE best apple pie. I love all the decorations and look forward to going every year!” The drive back to Lake City was anything but boring, as the Iowa harvest season always brings back many memories and starts endless conversations.

Give Thanks! Praise to the Lord for He is good. As we enter the month of November, I automatically think of Thanksgiving and all of the many blessings we have been given both personally and at Shady Oaks. We have a terrific group of team members and awesome residents that we get to love on each and every day!
I am happy to congratulate Tracey Toms on her new position! Tracey has been with us since February 2016 in her role as a Charge Nurse. She recently accepted the position as ADON: Staff Development/Infection Preventionist. We are very excited to welcome Tracey to our Nursing Leadership Team and use her experience and expertise to help take us to the next level of quality.
As we move closer to the holiday season, just a reminder that the Fire Marshal does not allow certain items such as straw, hay, dried cornstalks and cut greenery (evergreens) due to them being flammable. Living greenery, such as potted plants, are allowed. Extension cords and household surge protectors are also not allowed as you think about decorating resident rooms. Shady Oaks does have a limited amount of metal cased surge protectors available upon request (you may ask Amy or Maintenance). Stay warm and be blessed!

Residents admired the colors of Fall during their drive to the casino on a sunny, but crisp day. While discussing the harvest season, the excitement rose as they came upon Wild Rose Casino on the edge of Jefferson. Luck ran out and in a blink of an eye, a couple hours had passed enjoying penny machines and other fun slot machines. While no one won hundreds, nurse Carol Collins did walk away with a pleasant earning! Evelyn J commented, “I didn’t come home with empty pockets,
so I did ok! I just didn’t find the right machine, but the entire day was fun.” With stomachs growling, everyone was ready for lunch! They headed to Uptown Café on the square. The portions were gracious and delicious! They served all kinds of food, from country fried steak to giant tenderloins. All in all the day was a success and everyone looks forward to
returning!

We have been busy getting creative at Shady Oaks in preparation for Halloween! In anticipation of decorating for the Trick-or-Treaters, residents assisted in drawing faces on large round pumpkins. Once the faces were finished, they added lots of color with acrylic paints. The personalities of the pumpkins really took shape as crooked teeth were filled in, warts were added to noses, earrings hung from ears, freckles dotted across faces, and wagging red tongues with bright lips were painted on. Everyone had a chance to join in, either by sketching, painting, or giving
suggestions as to what would look good on our jack-o-lanterns. The last step is to coat the pumpkins with a clear protective lacquer and find the perfect spot to display them! Fall crafts continued throughout the month with Diane Vavak returning to Shady Oaks for an afternoon of painting fun. Her visits throughout the year are always well attended and enjoyed by many residents. Of course we enjoy going to her shop but Diane is always more than willing to bring her ceramics to us. This time residents enjoyed painting ghostly figurines! They ranged in size, poses, and faces.

WE WISH YOU WELL Shady Oaks provides extensive physical, occupational, and speech therapies. The healthcare team offers training and physical conditioning with a goal to return home safely. This month we were excited to send the following back home and wish them well.

Residents enjoyed a trip to Pocahontas to the Kaleidoscope Factory. They had the opportunity to watch owner Leonard Olson mold a chunk of wood into an egg shaped kaleidoscope on his lathe. While piecing together important components of the kaleidoscope, Leonard explained how the mirrors and lenses work inside to create the beautiful images everyone anticipates. With questions asked and stories told, residents enjoyed viewing Leonard’s wide collection of kaleidoscopes which included vintage ones and many others he had made. A quick trip across the street to Pizza Ranch for pizza and chicken, followed by a little bus tour concluded this fun trip to Pocahontas!
