TO OUR EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION

FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK Today is the Fourth Sunday of Easter and is often referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday

because we always hear a Gospel passage of Jesus declaring that he is the shepherd of his people, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27. We also call this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, an important day to highlight the need for vocations to ministry in the Church, both lay and ordained. The word vocation comes from the Latin, vocare, to call or to be called. In honor of the Day of Prayer for Vocations, I’m happy to say that the Diocese of Reno will celebrate the ordination of two men to the priesthood next month! Patrick Klekas, originally from Elko, Nevada, has completed his formation at Saint Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, California and was ordained a deacon at St. Joseph’s in Elko in February. Eduardo Gutierrez, originally from Mexico, completed his studies at the Seminario Hispano de Guadalupe in Mexico City and has been in Reno for two years studying English and serving at Our Lady of the Snows parish. He was ordained a deacon in January at Our Lady of the Snows. Both Patrick and Eduardo will be ordained on June 14 at 6:30 PM at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Carson City. All are welcome, and I encourage you to attend if you can. Ordinations are a beautiful celebration for the whole diocese and don’t happen often. A full church shows support for these young men embarking on a lifetime of ministry.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our moms! It is important to note that some sort of celebration for mothers is celebrated in many countries around the world. In the United States, Mother's Day grew from the simple beginnings of women calling for better care for infants and for peace in the world for the sake of their children. It is very telling that the roots of this day rest not in honoring mothers, but in mothers concerned for children. Mothers put their children before themselves, beginning with the inconvenience and burden of carrying them in the womb, to giving them birth, to ensuring their health and well-being for as long as they - and she - live. While children become "adults" at the age of 18, we know that mom's role hardly ends at that point. The concern and the prayer and the action on behalf of their children typically last as long as our mothers have breath. In a sense, Mother's Day turns around the voices of mothers throughout our world who always strive to speak out for their children so that we, as their chil-dren, can speak out for our mothers. As we do so, I believe all moms would say that the best way to honor them is to be a voice for change, for support and care for children all around the world and to work for peace that is more than just the absence of conflict but the presence of true justice, where every child has the opportunity to become what God, and their mother, dream for that child. Thanks to all our moms, living and deceased! Thank you for your exam-ple of selfless giving and of teaching love and compassion to all of us.

Hoy es el Cuarto Domingo de Pascua y a menudo se le conoce como el Domingo del Buen Pastor, porque en el Evangelio siempre escuchamos un pasaje de Jesús declarando que él es el pastor, "mis ovejas escuchan mi voz; yo las conozco, y ellas me siguen." Juan 10:27. También es el Día Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones, un día importante para resaltar la necesidad de vocaciones para el Ministerio en la Iglesia, tanto laicos como ordenados. La pala-bra vocación proviene del latín, de la voz, de llamar o de ser llamado. En honor al Dia de Ora-ción para las Vocaciones, me complace anunciar que la Diócesis de Reno celebrará la ordena-ción de dos hombres al sacerdocio el próximo mes. Patrick Klekas, originario de Elko, Nevada, completó su formación en el seminario de San Patricio en Menlo Park, California, y fue ordenado diácono en San José en Elko en Febrero. Eduardo Gutiérrez, originario de México, completó sus estudios en el Seminario Hispano de Guadalupe en la ciudad de México y ha estado en Reno durante dos años estudiando inglés y sirviendo en la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. Fue ordenado diácono en Enero en Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. Tanto Patrick como Eduardo serán ordenados el 14 de Junio a las 6:30 PM en la Iglesia de Santa Teresa de Ávila en Carson City. Todos son bienvenidos, y les animo a asistir si pueden. Las Ordenaciones Sacer-dotales son hermosas celebraciones para toda la diócesis y no ocurren seguido. Una iglesia lle-na muestra apoyo a estos jóvenes que se embarcan en una vida al Ministerio de Dios.

¡Feliz día de las madres a todas nuestras mamás! Es importante señalar que una especie de celebración para las madres se celebra en muchos países alrededor del mundo. En los Esta-dos Unidos, el día de la madre creció a partir de los comienzos simples de las mujeres que pe-dían una mejor atención para los bebés y por la paz en el mundo por el bien de sus hijos. Es muy revelador que las raíces de este día nacen no en honrar a las madres, sino en la preocupa-ción de las madres por los hijos. Las madres ponen a sus hijos antes que a ellas mismas, co-menzando con los posibles malestares durante los nueve meses del embarazo, el dar a luz, cui-dar de su salud y bienestar durante el tiempo que ellos y ella vivan. Mientras que los niños se convierten en "adultos" a la edad de 18 años, sabemos que el papel de mamá apenas termina en ese momento. La preocupación, oración y acción en nombre de los hijos suelen durar tanto co-mo nuestras madres tienen aliento. En cierto sentido, el día de la madre da la vuelta a las voces de las madres de todo nuestro mundo que siempre se esfuerzan por hablar por sus hijos para que nosotros, como sus hijos, podamos hablar por nuestras madres. Al hacerlo, creo que todas las madres dirían que la mejor manera de honrarlos es ser una voz para el cambio, para el apoyo y el cuidado de los niños de todo el mundo y para trabajar por la paz que es más que sólo la au-sencia de conflicto, sino la presencia de la verdadera justicia, donde cada niño tiene la oportuni-dad de convertirse en lo que Dios y su madre sueñan para ese niño. ¡Gracias a todas nuestras mamás, vivas y difuntas! Gracias por su ejemplo de dar desinteresadamente su cariño y de en-señar amor y compasión a todos nosotros.
