Tithes, Offerings, Alms

God’s Plan For Blessing You!Scriptures:Malachi 3: 8-12 Luke 6:38 Proverbs 19:17

Subject: Tithes, Offerings, and Alms

Introduction:

Are you sick and tired of going in circles when it comes to your finances? Many Christians are slow to learn the basic principles of giving and receiving and never seem to rise above their circumstances.

As a Christian we have a source of financial abundance that knows no limits. God has promised to meet our every need; spiritually, physically, and materially. The spiritual cornerstone of giving states that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35); if you increase your giving, you’ll increase your blessing (Mathew 6: 19, 20); and last but not least, the kingdom of God must take priority in your life (Mathew 6:33).

Therefore in order to receive financially from God, God says that there are certain responsibilities that we must fulfill. And if we do our part, God will do God’s part and meet all our needs according to God’s riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Today, I will share with you spiritual laws that will set you on the right track and help you to receive financial abundance from God.

Tithes, Offerings and Alms; God’s Plan for Blessing you!

Malachi 3: 6-12 New King James6 “For I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.     7 Yet from the days of your fathers you have gone away from My ordinances And have not kept them.     Return to Me, and I will return to you,” Says the Lord of hosts.       “But you said, ‘In what way shall we return?’

8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me,     Even this whole nation.

10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,   That there may be food in My house,  And try Me now in this,”   Says the Lord of hosts, “ If I will not open for you the windows of heaven   and pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.   11 “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” Says the Lord of hosts; 12 and all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land,” Says the Lord of hosts.

1. Tithing and Open Windows

Malachi 3:10 “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and prove Me now in this says the Lord of host if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such a blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”

One of your first responsibilities as Christian is to tithe. Many people don’t like to hear about tithing; it’s one subject that puts them into a state of anxiety and fear. They say, “We can’t even make ends meet now, how in the world can we give away ten percent of our income?”

But those who think this way fail to ever see the blessings that follow tithing. These people are not trusting God to be their unlimited source of supply. You will have no trouble tithing if you will see God as your ultimate provider.

Don’t limit yourself to just your paycheck for all your income. Tithing carries with it some definite blessings. One blessing is that you’ll have meat in your house. If you are experiencing a financial pinch to the point of not being able to buy meat at the grocery store, then maybe you should start tithing.

4

Page 5: W E L C O M E P A C K E T - greggtabernaclekcmo.org E L C O M E P A C K...  · Web viewW E L C O M E P A C K E T. Gregg Tabernacle African Methodist Episcopal Church . Fifth Episcopal

If you tithe, God will also give you spiritual meat from God’s Word. So enter into God’s courts with thanksgiving and praise on you lips; expecting to be fed spiritual beef-steaks from the Man or Woman of God!

God also made some promises to those who tithe:

God will pour out a blessing from the windows of heaven ; out from the panes of heaven comes a deluge of good things; so much that you have to share it with someone else.

God promises to rebuke the devourer. In other words God will rebuke anything or anyone that keeps your money from going as far as it should go. God will make one dollar seem like ten dollars! Saints I know I’m right about this!

2. Offerings and Measured ReturnsLuke 6:38 “Give and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together; and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Now let’s talk about offerings. The Bible tells us that we are to give offerings. What is an offering? An offering is something that is above the first ten percent.

As Christians, we are obligated to pay tithes—it is something we owe God.

Offerings, on the other hand, should come strictly from what you feel led of the Lord to give. When you give an offering, it moves men to give to you. And your return depends upon the measure that you’ve given—the more you give the more He’ll give to you!

3. Alms and Multiplied Blessings

Proverbs 19:17

“He that have pity on the poor lends unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will He pay him again.”

Last but not least, we will talk about almsgiving. Almsgiving is not tithing, and it is not an offering. It is a loan which God says God will repay. Technically, we don’t pay or give alms. They are something we sow.

The Apostle Paul wrote in 2nd Corinthians 9:6-10:

“But this I say, ‘He who sows sparingly will reap sparing, and he who sows bountifully will reap also bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

Conclusion

My brothers and my sisters, God is not primarily occupied with the amount of our giving, but with the motive that lies behind our giving. You see all the money in the world belongs to God.

My gift to God does not make God any richer; it makes me richer spiritually, because in my heart I finally realized that everything I have is God’s, and that I am giving because I love God and want to give back just a portion of what God’s given to me!

Our failure to give Tithes, Offering, and Alms is a serious matter. The person who fails to honor God with his/her giving actually robs God; not because it impoverishes/deprives God but because it denies the God-ordained means for support of the Lord’s work and God’s ministers.

God’s plan for blessing us financially is perfect. God said “try me and see”.

Saints I’ve tried God and …

Because I tithe, and God is faithful to God’s Word, there’s meat in my house,

Because I tithe, and God is faithful to God’s Word, the Lord opens up the windows of heaven, pours out blessings upon me, that there is not room enough for me to receive them,

Because I tithe and God is faithful to God’s Word, God rebukes the devourer (Satan) for my sake,

And Because I Tithe, give an Offering and sow Alms, and God is faithful to God’s Word,

I’m blessed coming in; I’m blessed going out,

I’m the head and not the tail,

I’m above and not beneath,

I have more than enough,

All my needs are met,

All my bills are paid,

Why?

Because the Lord is my Shepherd and I shall not want for nothing!

The songwriter said it best…

Just as sure as you are living and the Lord is in heaven on high,

The more you give, the more God gives to you,

Just keep on giving, because it’s really true,

True that, you can’t beat God’s giving, no matter how you try!

SOWING OF SEEDS WORSHIP“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring on offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.”1 Chronicles 16:29Our annual giving represents an act of worship in which we thank God for our blessings and symbolically return the first fruits of our labor as an offering to the Lord. The Bible teaches us to give a tithe or the first ten percent of what we earn to God and God’s work.

Give Now

STEWARDSHIP“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Psalm 24:1Stewardship, which means to serve as one who manages another’s property, finances or affairs, is not just a means for the church to raise money. For Christians, stewardship is a way of life that recognizes that everything we have is God’s, and we are simply managing those resources while here on earth. Through our stewardship, we are the heart, spirit and hands of God, reaching out in love to share with our world.

MINISTRYBecause of the service by which you have proved yourselves, people will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.” 2 Corinthians 9:13Our tithes and offerings support our church’s ministry and mission. Over the years, we have committed our resources to God, and God has truly blessed and used them to change lives, transform communities and renew the church. A true worship experience that combines music, praise dance and poetic gifts; Intentional spiritual formation through bible study, and church school; Youth activities, Men’s Ministry and Women’s Missionary Society; Compassionate Outreach efforts such as Volunteer Outreach Services; Women’s Missionary Society; and Prayer poured out and shared in the spirit, face-to-face, by phone, even online are a few of the ways that Gregg Tabernacle has sought to live out its missional vision. There’s still much more that God has for Gregg Tabernacle to do.EXPECTATIONS“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27At Gregg Tabernacle, we have four membership expectations:

To worship regularly. To continue to grow in your faith by participating in a small group study. To serve God with your hands, by volunteering in service to the congregation and community. To tithe or give in proportion to your income as you grow into tithing.

We don’t tell you how much you should give to support the ministry of the church, but the Bible teaches us to give a tithe or ten percent to God. For many, the tithe is just the beginning, and they experience the joy of generosity by giving far more to God. If you are currently not tithing, our hope is that you will commit a percentage of your income and increase that amount as you are able in the future until your reach the tithe.

AN ANNUAL COMMITMENT“Each year we ask every member of Gregg Tabernacle family to return an annual commitment card, committing their tithes and offerings for the coming year. The

process of prayerfully asking God to guide your decision and then making a commitment with your financial gifts is an act of worship, an expression of gratitude and praise to God and an opportunity to serve God with your financial resources.”

Every ministry area, as well as, church operations and maintenance are all supported by annual giving. The annual commitment cards make it possible for our church to budget, plan and expand our ministries in the coming year.Begin with prayer – As you thing about your commitments to our annual giving, please begin with prayer. Thank God for blessing you and ask God for guidance and discernment. Recognize that your offerings express both your desire to serve the Lord and your investment in God’s work.Assess Your Finances - This is a good time to look at your budget. What does your spending say about your priorities? If you’d like to learn more about biblically based financial management, Gregg Tabernacle offers financial classes to assist you.Make a Commitment - Determine the % of your income that you will give in the coming year, and complete your Annual Giving Commitment Card. For some, tithing is a goal each year. For others, it is the starting point, and giving in excess of this is the goal. If you are not yet tithing, consider taking a step toward the tithe this year. For others, it is the starting point, and giving in excess of this is the goal. Determine your giving in proportion to your income. Then set a % that you can increase each year until you reach the tithing goal. Currently, there are three giving options are available including cash, check or EFT. Electronic Funds Transfer) allows you to easily fulfill you commitment to the church. It also decreases costs to the church to handle commitment and develops a predictable cash flow for meeting the church’s financial obligations.

the power ofgenerosity

Celebrate the Power of Generosity – Giving is an act of worship, and on Commitment Sunday (December 4, 2016), we will present our commitments to God during the worship hours. This is an opportunity as a congregation to express our gratitude to Him, and renew our commitment to being God’s stewards in the world. Begin now to thank God for the blessings you have and will receive; and ask Him to bless and use your gifts to further build His Kingdom.

Prayer of FaithDear God,

I humbly acknowledge that everything I have comes from and belongs to you, and I come to you filled with gratitude and thanksgiving.

Gregg TabernacleDoing ministry in a new way

SOWING OF SEEDS God has given us a vision and has challenged us to commit our hearts in faith to share the love of Jesus Christ in our community. With God’s help, we can endeavor to give back to the Lord through our regular tithes and offerings.

“You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgiving to God.”

2 Corinthians 9:11-12

BOLDER GIVINGGive more. Risk more. Inspire more.

The power of generosity begins with our simple decision to generously return to God a portion of the blessings He has provided to us. We know that the true power will come from God when our gifts accomplish far more than we can even imagine.

S A C R A M E N T SBaptism - is a sacrament or ceremony in which a person is anointed with water to symbolize being brought into the community of faith. The African Methodist Episcopal Church recognizes three methods of baptism, they are pouring, sprinkling and immersion.

Communion - is a sacrament in which participants eat bread and drink wine to show that they continue to take part of Christ's redeeming resurrection by symbolically taking part is the representation of His body (the bread) and blood (the juice).

The African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded by Bishop Richard Allen 1787.  His journey began when he and his family was on a plantation owned by Benjamin Chew and later separated from his family, and sold to Mr. Stokely. Richard Allen became fond of the teachings of the Methodist denomination. He and Absalom Jones were licensed lay preachers 1784 in the St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During their ministry Allen and Jones were allowed to preach but it was 5:00 o'clock in the morning. The black worshipers were allowed to sit amongst others in the congregation until the Christmas Conference. That Conference in the Methodist Episcopal change the way Richard Allen and other blacks worshiped at St. George's M.E. Church. A trustee met the black worshipers  at the door and instructed them to sit in the balcony, and when it was time to pray they were to come all together and kneel at the altar.

However, one day while Richard Allen and others were praying at the altar they were 'pulled off their knees' in spite of the plea of Absalom Jones and others to the trustees at the church,  they were snatched off their knees while praying to God.  Therefore, Richard Allen and others marched out of St. George's to go seek a place to worship God freely.  Richard Allen was an entrepreneur, and had a blacksmith shop where he made tools, wheels and equipment to use daily.  In spite of the new environment in worshiping in a blacksmith shop, Richard Allen used his daily work station as an anvil (awkward shaped steel) as his first pulpit in which the bible was placed as he preached to blacks about a liberating God.

As Bishop Richard Allen was trying to establish the church, 'the walkout' was only the beginning of the hard road ahead in being independent in worshiping God.  His love for the Methodist system resonated in his spirit, therefore he wanted to establish the new church as Methodist.  Several community leaders helped Bishop Allen, names such as Dr. Benjamin Rush and Mr. Robert Ralston used their influence to help them along the way.  It is commonly said that the A.M.E. Church is the only church that was founded due to Social Justice.  Many things have changed but many things have remained the same.  The A.M.E. Church is established all-over the world. The Root of Methodism reaches deep for many years of the Protestant movements before the various Methodist sect were founded. John Wesley is mostly credited for being the originator of the Methodist Church but many scholars have argued this point. Nevertheless, the flavor of Methodism is kindly accredited to John Wesley. It's documented that he had a 'warmest in his heart' when he attended a camp meeting with the Arminianians after his fall out with the Roman Catholic Church. This spiritual awakening of the heart he acknowledged it was the Holy Spirit. From this spiritual experience and the upbringing knowledge of both his parents, John Wesley was convinced that the Lord wants his church to following what the the Bible states "Let all things be done decently and in order." --  I

Corinthians 14:40  Also, John Wesley brought with him other practices he experienced in other denominations that he was once part of.  He believed as Methodist we were called to help the poor and homeless through mission work but work alone did not save!  Wesley believed that "people can only be saved through faith in Jesus Christ, not by any other acts of redemption such as good deeds."
