Principal's Greeting

The month of September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows,the image of Mary's anguish as her son suffered and died on thecross for us. As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain of witnessingthe death of my child in such a horrific way. While I often thinkof Mary as the strong and beautiful woman she is, it is moredifficult for me to think of her face twisted in pain and covered intears.  Even the modern images of her in sorrow are as beautifulas they are haunting. When I think about Mary in anguish, Ithink about the actress who portrayed Mary in Mel Gibson’s ThePassion of the Christ. My sister and I saw that movie together intheaters when it was released, crying side by side as we werereminded how much suffering Jesus went through to save us.Back then I was a senior in high school and I still remember howmoved I was by Mary’s tears. Her journey as the mother of Christwas captured through images of her pain. Though only a movie,The Passion of the Christ showed me how incredibly special ourMother Mary is to our understanding of Christ and his suffering.She carried him for 9 months, raised him, participated in hisministry, tended to his needs, loved him for his whole life, andwas called to witness the miracle of his suffering. In anincredibly human moment, she watched her son die. Mary callsus this month to comprehend the pain that Jesus suffered to saveus. How much he must love us to have suffered so much. Andhow blessed we are that Jesus does not give us what we deserve.

Moments to Celebrate!Ms. Victoria Zavala has joined our Preschool Team! She will be servingas an aide to both our Preschool and PK students. As a product herselfof Catholic education at Holy Cross School in Ventura, we are blessedto have her presence on campus. The painting of the fence surrounding the outside trash cans is halfway done! Thank you to Joe Martinez for this diligent work and serviceto the Notre Dame School community. STAR testing has begun! If your student has not already begun STAREarly Literacy (PK-2), STAR Reading (2-8) or STAR Math (2-8), they willsoon. Results will be shared with parents and discussed at ourupcoming Primary Educator Series on Mon, Sept 23 Mr. Ritchie has started teaching recorder! Students in the 3rd gradeRecorder Ensemble are learning to play this instrument two times aweek. Mr. Ritchie is also in charge of our after school band. Students in4th, 5th, or 6th interested in playing alto saxophone, clarinet, or flutecan sign up with Ms. Irma in the front office.

Head Lice - Every year, most schools and other publicplaces are confronted with pediculosis, commonly knownas head lice. It is a very common occurrence! It is veryimportant that you know that head lice is NOT medicallyassociated with cleanliness. Even children from very cleanhomes contract head lice, just as children who eatproperly and take vitamins catch colds and the flu. Pleasehelp us by embracing this information so that commonmisconceptions and stigma are dispelled. We believe thatthe proactive support of parents in preventing outbreaksof lice will help what often becomes a time consumingand frustrating process for those families affected by thiscommon childhood nuisance. Check your children forhead lice and watch out for the signs of scratching and redbumps! Play before Eating - Our school has transitioned to thepractice of “Play before Eating” for lunch time. Studentswill be playing before eating their lunches and standingin the lunch line. Students are typically eating breakfastbetween 8:15am and 8:40am with our “Breakfast in theClassroom” program. The students are then being servedlunch at 12:20pm or 12:40pm. We encourage all families topack a snack to be eaten during Recess at 10:10am andstudents are also able to eat all leftover breakfast itemsduring snack. Monthly Family Mass - This Sunday at 9:30am! Reminderto students to wear their uniforms proudly to Mass! Jog A Thon Pledges Now - Fundraising is now going on forthe Jog A Thon. Packets can be found online atnotredamesb.org and attached to this newsletter. If youwould like a printed copy, please ask the front office.Prizes will be given to students who raised the mostmoney and who raised the most individual donations.Class prizes are also available.

El mes de Septiembre está dedicado a Nuestra Señora de losDolores, la imagen de la angustia de María cuando su hijo sufrióy murió en la cruz por nosotros. Como madre, no puedo imaginarel dolor de presenciar la muerte de mi hijo de una manera tanhorrible. Si bien a menudo pienso en Mary como la mujer fuertey hermosa que es, es más difícil para mí pensar en su rostroretorcido de dolor y cubierto de lágrimas. Incluso las imágenesmodernas de ella en pena son tan hermosas como inquietantes.Cuando pienso en María angustiada, pienso en la actriz queinterpretó a María en La Pasión de Cristo de Mel Gibson. Mihermana y yo vimos esa película juntos en los cines cuando seestrenó, llorando una al lado de la otra al recordarnos cuántosufrimiento sufrió Jesús para salvarnos. En aquel entonces estabaen el último año de la escuela secundaria y aún recuerdo loconmovida que estaba por las lágrimas de Mary. Su viaje como lamadre de Cristo fue capturado a través de imágenes de su dolor.Aunque solo es una película, La Pasión de Cristo me mostró loincreíblemente especial que es nuestra Madre María paranuestra comprensión de Cristo y su sufrimiento. Ella lo llevódurante 9 meses, lo crió, participó en su ministerio, atendió susnecesidades, lo amó durante toda su vida y fue llamado apresenciar el milagro de su sufrimiento. En un momentoincreíblemente humano, vio morir a su hijo. María nos llama estemes para comprender el dolor que Jesús sufrió para salvarnos.Cuánto debe amarnos para haber sufrido tanto. Y cuánbendecidos somos de que Jesús no nos dé lo que merecemos.

Ellaservirá como ayudante para nuestros estudiantes de preescolar y PK.Como producto de la educación católica en la escuela Holy Cross enVentura, tenemos la bendición de tener su presencia en el la escuela.¡ La pintura de la cerca que rodea los botes de basura exteriores está amedio camino! Gracias a Joe Martinez por este diligente trabajo yservicio a la comunidad de Notre Dame School. Las pruebas STAR han comenzado! Si su estudiante aún no hacomenzado STAR Early Literacy (PK-2), STAR Reading (2-8) o STARMath (2-8), lo harán pronto. Los resultados serán compartidos con lospadres y discutidos en nuestra próxima serie de educadores primariosel lunes 23 de septiembre ¡El Sr. Ritchie ha comenzado a enseñar grabadora! Los estudiantes enel Conjunto de Grabadoras de 3er grado están aprendiendo a tocar esteinstrumento dos veces por semana. El Sr. Ritchie también está a cargode nuestra banda después de la escuela. Los estudiantes de 4to, 5to o6to interesados en tocar el saxofón alto, el clarinete o la flauta puedeninscribirse con la Sra. Irma en la oficina principal.

Momentos para Celebrar Piojos: cada año, la mayoría de las escuelas y otros lugarespúblicos se enfrentan a la pediculosis, comúnmente conocidacomo piojos. ¡Es un hecho muy común! Es muy importante quesepa que los piojos NO están médicamente asociados con lalimpieza. Incluso los niños de hogares muy limpios contraenpiojos, al igual que los niños que comen adecuadamente y tomanvitaminas contraen resfriados y la gripe. Ayúdenos adoptandoesta información para que se disipan los conceptos erróneos y elestigma comunes. Creemos que el apoyo proactivo de los padrespara prevenir los brotes de piojos ayudará a lo que a menudo seconvierte en un proceso frustrante y que consume mucho tiempopara las familias afectadas por esta molestia común en lainfancia. ¡Revise a sus hijos para detectar piojos y tenga cuidadocon los signos de rasguños y protuberancias rojas! Juegue antes de comer: nuestra escuela ha pasado a la prácticade "Jugar antes de comer" a la hora del almuerzo. Los estudiantesjugarán antes de comer sus almuerzos y pararse en la fila delalmuerzo.
