2021 BODDINGTON LIONS RODEO Since its inception in 1976, the Boddington Lion's Club has successfully run
the Lions Rodeo annually on the first Saturday in November each year.
Recognised as the largest rodeo in Western Australia, the rodeo weekend
has something in store for everyone.
Saturday morning sees Western Australia's best shearers in action along
with a procession of Emergency Services Vehicles and school children
winding their way to the Rodeo Grounds.
Arriving at the Rodeo Grounds, one is tempted by the smell of Donuts and
Hamburgers, entertained by the thigh slapping music of the many country
and western performers and riveted by the nonstop thrills and spills of the
Rodeo events.
After the day is through, mingle with the competitors as the entertainment
continues well into the night.

WHAT GOES ON AT THE RODEO? An explanation of some of the major points will assist you to understand the important
aspects of major Rodeo events. At all times, contestants must ride to set rules, the
judges allocating points for the style of the rider and performance of the horse or
steer. At no time is the rider permitted to abuse or mistreat the stock.
Saddle Bronc Riding
The contest is judged on the rider's ability to synchronise his movements with the bucking
rhythm of the horse. To qualify, the contestant must 'mark out' (having his spurs resting
forward of the horse's shoulders until the horse completes his first jump out of the chute). He
is disqualified for touching any part of the animal or equipment, losing a stirrup, or getting
bucked off before eight seconds has elapsed.
Bare Back Riding
Points are given for the rider's style and flair on a horse which he
has no control. The contestant has one hand in the 'bare back riggin'
leather handhold and he must keep the other from touching the
horse or himself. The rider must mark out and stay on board for
eight seconds.
Team Roping
The two-member team is made up of a header and a heeler. The header ropes the steer
around the horns, then the heeler must rope both animal’s hind legs. Official time is taken
when both catches are made, the ropes are tight, and the horses are facing each other.
Barrel Race
Each contestant runs their horse in a clover pattern around three
large barrels, with the fastest time deciding the winner.
Steer Undecorating
Contestants on horseback chase a steer that has a ribbon taped
to its back. The rider must get the ribbon in the shortest possible
time while a hazer keeps the steer running in a straight line.
Break-away Roping
This is a timed event in which a rope is tied to the saddle horn with a ribbon. After the rider
ropes the calf, they stop their horse. The running calf breaks the tie, pulling the rope from the
saddle horn.

WHAT GOES ON AT THE RODEO? Bull Riding
In the most dangerous event in the Rodeo, the contestant earns points for staying on a
bucking bull for eight seconds. The tougher the bull and the greater control shown by the
rider, the more points they earn. To help the rider keep his grip, a braided rope wrapped
around the bull's chest is pulled tight by the rider's hand.
Steer Wrestling
Two riders, being the steer wrestler and the hazer, follow each side of a running steer. At the
right moment, the steer wrestler launches himself off his horse, taking the steer by the horns.
He must stop the steer then roll it to the ground. When the steer is lying flat on its side,
official time is taken.
Rope and Tie
The mounted contestant follows the stock until he can throw his loop. If he makes a catch he
then dismounts, runs down the rope and ties the stock by three legs. Time is then taken, but
to qualify the animal must remain tied for five seconds.
