Read the operating instructions be-fore using this machine for the firsttime. They contain important infor-mation about the safety, use andmaintenance of the machine. Thisway you will avoid the risk of acci-dents and damage to the machine.Keep these operating instructions ina safe place and ensure that newusers are familiar with the content.Pass them on to any future owner ofthe machine.

Correct usageOnly use the washing machine towash items which are specified by

the manufacturer to be machine-wash-able on the wash-care label, and tex-tiles composed of hand-washable woolor wool blend fabrics as well as satin, lace, silk and other hand-washable gar-ments.Any other applications may be danger-ous. The manufacturer is not liable fordamage resulting from improper use oroperation.

This appliance should not be oper-ated by children. Supervise its use

by the elderly or infirm.

Technical safetyBefore setting up the machine, check it for any externally visible

damage. Do not install and use a dam-aged machine.

Before connecting the machine, ensure that the connection data on

the data plate (fusing, voltage and fre-quency) match the mains electricity

supply. If in any doubt, consult a quali-fied electrician.

The electrical safety of this appli-ance can only be guaranteed when

continuity is complete between the ma-chine and an effective earthing systemwhich complies with local and nationalregulations. It is most important that thisbasic safety requirement is regularlytested by a qualified electrician. The manufacturer cannot be held re-sponsible for the consequences of aninadequate earthing system (e.g. elec-tric shock).

Do not connect the appliance tothe mains electricity supply by an

extension lead. Extension leads do notguarantee the required safety of the ap-pliance (e.g. danger of overheating).

The machine is built in accordancewith current safety requirements.

Unauthorised repairs could result in un-foreseen dangers for the user, for whichthe manufacturer cannot accept re-sponsibility. Repairs should only be un-dertaken by a Miele approved engi-neer.Ensure current is not supplied to theappliance while maintenance or repairwork is being carried out.

The machine is only completelyisolated from the electricity supply

when:

– it is switched off at the wall socketand the plug is withdrawn, or

– it is switched off at the mains, or

– the mains fuse is withdrawn.

Warning and safety instructions

8

This machine must only be con-nected to the on-site water supply

using a new hose kit. Old hoses mustnot be re-used. Check the hose regu-larly for signs of wear and tear. Changein good time to avoid the risk of leaksand subsequent damage.

Faulty components must only bereplaced by genuine Miele original

spare parts. Only when these parts arefitted can the safety standards of themachine be guaranteed.

In countries where there are areaswhich may be subject to infestation

by cockroaches or other vermin, payparticular attention to keeping the appli-ance and its surroundings in a cleancondition at all times. Any damagewhich may be caused by cockroachesor other vermin will not be covered bythe appliance guarantee.

UseThis equipment is not designed formaritime use or for use in mobile

installations such as caravans, aircraftetc. However, it may be suitable forsuch usage subject to a risk assess-ment of the installation being carriedout by a suitably qualified engineer.

Do not install your washing ma-chine in rooms where temperatures

below freezing may occur. Frozenhoses may burst under pressure.Thereliability of the electronic control unitmay be impaired at temperatures belowfreezing point.

Before using the machine for thefirst time, check that the transit fit-

ting at the rear of the machine has beenremoved (see section on "Installation").During spinning, a transit fitting which isstill in place may result in damage toboth the machine and adjacent furni-ture or appliances.

Turn off the stopcock if the ma-chine is to be left for any length of

time (e.g. holiday), especially if there isno floor drain (gully) in the immediatevicinity.

Flooding dangerIf hooking the drain hose into a

wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent thesink from overflowing.Make sure the drain hose is secure, sothat the force of the water flowing out ofthe hose does not dislodge it. Other-wise this will result in flooding.

Take care to ensure that foreign ob-jects (e.g. nails, pins, coins, paper

clips) do not find their way into the ma-chine with the washing. Foreign objectsmay damage components of the ma-chine (e.g. suds container, drum),which in turn can result in damage tothe washing.

Warning and safety instructions

9

If the correct amount of detergentis dispensed, the machine should

not need to be descaled. If, however, you do wish to descale the machineonly use proprietary non-corrosivedescaling agents and strictly observethe manufacturer’s instructions given onthe packaging. If in doubt, contact theMiele Customer Service Dept. or yourMiele Dealer.

Textiles which have beenpre-treated in solvent-based clean-

ing agents must be thoroughly rinsed inclean water before being washed in themachine.

Never use solvent-based cleaningagents in this machine, as this may

result in damage to component partsand create toxic fumes. Such deter-gents also pose a fire and explosionhazard.

Only use dyes specified by themanufacturer as being suitable for

use in a domestic washing machine. Al-ways observe the manufacturer's in-structions carefully.

Colour run and dye removers con-tain sulphur compounds which can

cause damage such as corrosion. Donot use these products in this machine.

Always make sure the drum is sta-tionary before reaching in to re-

move laundry. Reaching into a movingdrum is extremely dangerous.

AccessoriesAccessory parts may only be fittedwhen expressly approved by Miele.

If other parts are used, guarantee, per-formance and product liability claimsmay be invalidated.

Disposal of your old machineBefore discarding an old machineunplug it. Render the plug useless.

Cut off the cable directly behind the ap-pliance to prevent misuse. This shouldbe done by a competent person.

– Water consumption and energy us-age are determined by the size of theload. Load to the maximum recom-mended for the programme selected.

– Programme durations can vary con-siderably due to the automatic loadadjustment feature. Depending onthe amount of laundry, the main washmay be shortened and one rinseomitted.

– Use the Mixed Wash programme orthe Quick Wash programme forsmaller amounts of laundry.

– To save energy wash normally andlightly soiled laundry at lower tem-peratures. The 95°C Cottonsprogramme is probably only neededin exceptional circumstances, e.g.for oil based stains or where a veryhot wash is required.

– A main wash (programme withoutpre-wash) is sufficient to clean nor-mally soiled laundry.

– By using the additional option Soakfor heavily soiled laundry you can se-lect a lower temperature in the mainwash.

– Use the additional option Soak in-stead of Pre-wash with heavily soiledlaundry. If Soak is followed immediately by amain wash the same suds are used.

– Use the Short wash option for nor-mally or very lightly soiled laundry.

– Do not exceed the amounts of deter-gent which may be recommended bythe manufacturer on the packaging.

– Reduce the amounts of detergentwith smaller loads, (e.g. with a halfload, approx. one third less deter-gent).

– Select the highest suitable spinspeed in the wash programme whentumble drying afterwards.

Washing environmentally and economically

Before using the machine for the firsttime ensure that it is correctly in-stalled and connected. See the rele-vant section under "Installation".Also check that the fluff filter is se-curely tightened. Otherwise there isa risk of water leakage during use.

For safety reasons spinning is not pos-sible until the machine has been pre-pared for using for the first time. To acti-vate the spinning function you must runa wash programme without any laundryand without detergent.Using detergent could result in an ex-cessive build-up of foam.

This also activates the ball valve. Theball valve prevents detergent escapingfrom the suds container into the sumpduring a wash programme, thus makingmaximum use of the detergent.

Before washing

ASort the laundry.

^ Empty all pockets.

Foreign objects (e.g. nails, coins, paper clips, etc.) can cause dam-age to textiles and components inthe machine.

^ Badly soiled areas, e.g. collars andcuffs, and water soluble stains canbe pre-treated with bar soap, liquiddetergent or detergent mixed into asolution or paste.

With particularly stubborn stains askyour dry cleaner for advice.

Do not use solvent-based cleaningagents in this machine.

^ Sort the washing by colour and bycare label symbols. Most garmentshave a textile care label in the collaror side seam.

Dark textiles often contain excess dyeand should be washed separately sev-eral times before being included in amixed load. Always wash whites andcoloureds separately.

Delicate textiles should be washed sep-arately in a delicates programme (use awashing bag where appropriate).

– Curtains:Remove lead weights and strips orplace in a laundry bag.

– Underwiring and collar stiffeners:Any loose wiring in bras, shirt collarstiffeners, etc. should be removed orsewn in.

– Knitted garments, trousers andjeans, T-shirts and sweat shirts:Turn inside out, if recommended bythe manufacturer.

– Close any zips, fasten hooks andeyes etc. before washing.

– Fasten duvet covers to preventsmaller items rolling up inside them.

Do not wash any items in this ma-chine which are specified by themanufacturer as non-machinewashable on the care label. (hsymbol)

How to wash correctly

20

All modern detergents produced forautomatic washing machines are suit-able, including liquid, compact (con-centrated), tablets, liquid tablets andspecial application detergents. Use dis-pensing aids, e.g. balls, if these aresupplied with the detergent. Tablets aresuitable for full loads, but note that itmay be impractical to reduce tablets byproportion to suit smaller loads.

Woollens and knitwear containing woolmixtures and hand-washable garmentsshould be washed using a detergentspecifically designed for washingwoollens.

Silk should be washed using a liquiddetergent specifically designed forwashing woollens. Do not use biologi-cal detergents on silk as the enzymesmay damage the silk!

Add detergent according to the amountrecommended on the packaging. Theright amount to dispense will dependon the following:

– The quantity of laundry.

– The soiling level of the laundry.

Lightly soiledNo visible dirt or stains. Possiblyslight body odour.

Normally soiledVisibly dirty and/or just a few slightstains.

Heavily soiledStains and soiling clearly visible.

– The water hardness levelCheck with your local water supplierif you do not know the water hard-ness level in your area.

Water HardnessHardness

rangeType ofwater

I soft 0 - 1.3 0 - 7

II medium 1.3 - 2.5 7 - 14

III hard 2.5 - 3.8 14 - 21

IV very hard over 3.8 over 21

It is important to dispense thecorrect amount, because . . .

. . . too little has the following results:

– Laundry will not be properly cleanand will in time become grey andhard to the touch.

– Greasy particles cling to the laundry.

– Limescale deposits on the heater el-ements.

. . . too much results in the following:

– Excessive foam.

– Low level of agitation.

– Poor washing, rinsing and spinningresults.

– High water consumption (an addi-tional rinse cycle will automaticallyswitch in).

– Burdening the environment.

i = Compartment for pre-wash.This compartment is also usedfor starch formulations whenstarching separately.

j = Compartment main wash

p = Compartment fabric conditioner

Water is taken in through compartmenti in the pre-wash.

Water is taken in through compartmentj in the main wash. If the capacity ofcompartment j is insufficient for theamount of detergent needed for aCOTTONS programme (e.g. in veryhard water areas), the machine can beprogrammed so that water and deter-gent can also be taken into the mainwash through compartment i , see"Programmable functions", "Activatingcompartment i".

Water softenersA water softener can be used to cutdown on the use of detergents in ex-tremely hard water areas. Dispense ac-cording to the amount specified on thepackaging. First add detergent andthen the water softener.

Dispense detergent as specified forsoft water areas.

Miele do not recommend connectingthe machine to a household water soft-ener.

If you wash using several components(e.g. special application detergents),we recommend always dispensing theagents into compartment j in the fol-lowing order:

1. Detergent

2. Water softener

3. Stain remover

This way the agents are distributedmore efficiently.

Fabric conditioners, texturisers, liquid starchFabric conditioners make garments softand fluffy to handle and help preventstatic cling when tumble drying.

Texturisers are synthetic starch formula-tions and give body to items e.g. shirts, tablecloths and bed linen.

Starch gives body to items of washing.

^ Dispense according to the amountspecified on the packaging.

If starching frequently, clean the dis-penser drawer and especially the si-phon tube and fabric conditionerchannel. (See section on the deter-gent dispenser drawer in "Cleaningand Care"). Do not add starch for-mulations or viscous liquid starch tothe p compartment as it will clog itup. See "Starching separately".

Cleaning the detergentdispenser drawer

^ Pull out the conditioner insert and thesiphon tube and wash under runningwarm water.

^ Also clean the channel over whichthe siphon tube is inserted.

^ Remove the detergent dispenserdrawer.

^ Wash under running warm water.

^ Replace the conditioner insert and si-phon tube and push the detergentdispenser drawer back into position.

Extra cleaningCarrying out a hot wash (70°C orabove) with powder detergent approx.once every six weeks will help to en-sure that no deposits build up in themachine. These can occur when wash-ing is mainly done at low temperatures, and also lead to unpleasant smells. Ifyou have no reason to wash laundry oc-casionally at this high temperature, thencarry out a 95°C Cottons programme asa cleaning cycle with a biological pow-der detergent and no laundry, at regu-lar intervals.

Cleaning and care

42

Cleaning the fluff (drain) filterand pumpCheck the drain filter initially after 3-4washes to ascertain how often it is likelyto require cleaning.

With normal cleaning approx. 2 litres ofwater run out.

If the drain outlet is clogged, more wa-ter will be retained in the machine (upto 25 litres).

Caution: If laundry has been washedat a high temperature, water drain-ing out of the machine will still behot. Danger of scalding.

^ Use the (yellow) filter flap openersupplied with the machine to openthe access flap.

^ Place a dish under the drain spout.

^ Turn the fluff filter lid round 2-3 times.Do not take it right out.

With large volumes of water the dish willneed to be emptied several times. Se-cure the fluff filter back into positionand empty the dish before repeatingthe procedure.

Cleaning and care

43

^ Once the flow of water ceases, re-move the fluff filter completely.

^ Clean the fluff filter thoroughly.

^ Remove any foreign objects (e.g.buttons, coins, etc.) and fluff.

^ Turn the impeller by hand to makesure it rotates freely. Any foreign ob-jects causing an obstruction shouldbe removed.

^ Clean the inside of the fluff filter hous-ing.

Remove any deposits of limescale anddetergent or foreign objects from thethread of the filter housing and filter unitas they can cause water to leak.Limescale deposits are often a sign ofusing too little detergent.

^ Put the fluff filter back in place andsecure it.

Make sure the fluff filter is securelytightened. Otherwise there is a riskof water leakage during use.

After cleaning

^ Pour approx. 2 litres of water into thedetergent dispenser compartmentj to reactivate the ball valve whichkeeps detergent in circulation in thesuds.

Cleaning and care

44

Cleaning the filter in the waterinletThe washing machine has a filter toprotect the water inlet valve.

The accessible filter in the union in theopen end of the inlet hose should bechecked every six months, or more of-ten if there are frequent interruptions tothe external water supply.

^ First turn off the stopcock.

^ Unscrew the threaded union connect-ing the free end of the inlet hose tothe stopcock.

^ Remove rubber seal a from the re-cess.

^ Using pointed pliers, take hold of theplastic filter bar, remove the filter band clean.

^ Put the filter and seal back in the re-verse order and reconnect the hose.

Turn on the stopcock and check theconnection is watertight. If water dripsout, tighten the connection.

Never forget to put the filter back inplace after cleaning it.

Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitable in-stallation surface for a washing ma-chine, being far less prone to vibrationduring the spin cycle than woodenfloorboards or a carpeted surface.

Please note the following points:

^ The machine must be level and se-curely positioned.

^ To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

^ If installing on a wooden joist floor, werecommend a plywood base (at least60x45x3 cm). The base should spanseveral joists and be bolted to thejoists and not only to the floorboards.Check for the presence of pipes andcables first.

^ If possible, install the machine in acorner, as this is usually the most sta-ble part of the floor.

Levelling and adjustingLift the appliance from its packagingbase and move it to its installation site.

Please note:

^ Ensure that the machine feet and thefloor are dry to prevent the machinefrom slipping during the spin cycle.

^ Remove the transit fitting (next page).

The appliance must be level to ensuresafe and proper operation.

^ Unscrew the feet until the machinestands level.

^ Hold the foot tight using a pipewrench.

^ Tighten the counternut using ascrewdriver as indicated.

Installation

53

Removing the transit fitting

^ Unscrew the 4 outer screws markedA completely.

^ Unscrew the 4 screws marked B.These screws must then be left onthe transit bars.

^ Remove the transit bars.

^ Plug the 4 large holes with the capssupplied.

The transit fitting together withscrews should be stored in a safeplace for future use. It must be re-fit-ted if the machine is to be movedagain.

Re-fitting the transit fittingTo refit the transit fitting reverse the pro-cedure described above.

Installation

Connection to water supplyThe machine should be connected to amains water supply in accordance withstandard regulations. In Germany thewashing machine is not required tohave a non-return valve as it has beendesigned to comply with the relevantGerman DIN standard.

Connection to a household water soft-ener is not recommended.

Connection to the mains water supplyshould incorporate a mains stopcockwith 3/4’’ thread. The stopcock shouldbe fitted by a qualified plumber.

The approx. 2.5 m long 3/8" pressurehose should be connected to the stop-cock via the 3/4" threaded union. Please make sure the washer sits cor-rectly in the union.

A longer hose of 4 metres in length isavailable as an optional extra.

This pressure hose is not suitable forconnection to a hot water supply. Theconnection point is subject to mainswater pressure. Turn on the stopcockslowly and check for leaks.

If replacing the inlet hose only use ahose able to withstand pressure of atleast 70 bar. This also applies to allfixtures and fittings used. Miele origi-nal parts are tested to this standard.

The machine is designed to operatewith a water flow pressure of 1 bar mini-mum up to 10 bar maximum. The staticwater pressure must not exceed 10 bar.If it is higher than 10 bar it is essentialto fit a reducer valve.

There is a minimum flow pressure of1 bar pressure if, with the stopcockopened fully, 5 litres of water flow into asuitable container in 15 seconds.

The dirt filter in the open end of the inlethose must not be removed as it pro-tects the water inlet valve.

Installation

55

Connection to the drainagesystemThe machine drains via a drain pumpwith a delivery head of 1 metre.

The drain hose is 1.5 m long. It mustnot be kinked as this restricts drainage. The swivel elbow at the end of the hosecan be turned in either direction, or canbe detached if required, with a sharptwist and pull.

Drain hose connection:

^ Direct into a sink: Hook the hose overthe edge and secure. Make sure thatthe water can flow freely to avoidflooding and to prevent water frombeing sucked back into the machine.

^ Connected securely to a floor gully.

^ Connected securely to a standpipe.

^ Connected securely to a plastic drainpipe with a rubber nipple. There is noneed to use a non-return valve.

If required, the drain hose can be ex-tended to a length of 5 m. The neces-sary parts can be purchased from theMiele Spare Parts Department or yourMiele dealer.
