A message from our President

My Dear Friends, Where does the time go? It is so hard to believe that it has been almost a full year since our historic gathering in Quincy, MA for our Centennial Convention. Yet here we are preparing to cross the country to our other coast for the start of our second century. I look forward to seeing all those who are able to be with us in Los Angeles, CA this July as we hold our 101st National Convention. All my thanks and that of the Supreme Council to Council 133 – Los Angeles, CA for taking this year’s annual gathering on. I now turn to some very sad news that must be conveyed. Early in May we lost a very dedicated member of our Supreme Council, Dolores “Dee” Herbert, Council 3 – Philadelphia, PA. Dee’s sudden passing came as a shock to all of us who knew her and had the utmost pleasure of working with her. While Dee had held several offices on the local, district and national level, she was currently serving as our National Lithuanian

Language Chair this year. I am honored to have known her, worked with her and most of all called her a dear friend. Our deepest sympathies to her family on her passing. We shall miss you treasured friend. May she rest in peace. I also would like to announce that I have asked Maryte Sepikas of Council 133 to step in to the roll of Lithuanian Language and Culture Chair to complete the remainder of Dee’s term. Maryte very graciously has accepted. I thank her for stepping in with all she already has going on. Your Supreme Council met in Alsip, IL, on May 3rd. A very productive meeting was the order of the day I assure you. One of the items of most concern was the financial future of our organization. Please know that we gave this topic tremendous thought before deciding on our recommendation to the delegates of this summer’s convention. We will be recommending the following increase in dues: First member of the household, $25.00 per year which will include an electronic copy of Vytis – The Knight. Spouses and additional family members in the same household will be $15.00 per year. Additionally, we will recommend abolishing Life-time Membership as well as institute charging $30.00 per year for those wishing a hard copy of Vytis – The Knight mailed to your homes. I’d like to remind everyone that this is only a recommendation from the Supreme Council and that the final decision will rest with the delegates of the 101st National Convention. While in town for the Supreme Council meeting I also had the pleasure of being present at the dedication ceremony of the Our Lady of Šiluva Shrine at St. Casimir’s Cemetery in Chicago, IL. The shrine is a beautiful tribute to Our Lady on the occasion of our 100th Anniversary. The shrine was the centennial anniversary project of the Mid-America District. All their members can be proud of this beautiful sculpture. Lastly, in this issue of Vytis – The Knight you will find a quick survey we would like your help with. If you could take a few minutes to fill it in and submit your answers we would really appreciate it. May we all continue working together “For God and Country”. Vytiškai,

Regina Regina Juska-Svoba, HM President

In Memorium Dolores “Dee” Budelis Herbert

Rest in Peace It is with great sadness and a deep feeling of loss that we announce the passing of Knights of Lithuania National Lithuanian Language and Culture Chair, Dolores "Dee" Herbert. Dee passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, she was 72 years young. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and survived by her son, Richard (wife Kathleen), her daughter, Cathleen (husband Thomas Farley), her granddaughter, Nicole, her grandson, Richard, and her brother, Raymond Budelis, of Sand Point, Idaho. Dee was a long time member of Council 3, Philadelphia, PA. In addition to numerous activities on the council level, Dee also served on the board of the Amber District holding various offices including District President. In addition to her national office of Language and Culture Chair, Dee is also a past national Recording Secretary and National Trustee. Her dedication and hard work for the Knights of Lithuania earned her our 4th Degree. Her energy and excitement for all things Lithuanian will be missed by all who knew her. She was truly one in a million and it was an honor to call her a friend. A memorial service was held at St. George’s Church, Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, May 17th followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. The Mid-America District celebrates the Knights of Lithuania’s Centennial Jubilee

By Regina Juska-Svoba, HM, National Public Relations Chair

Last year the Knights of Lithuania organization celebrated our 100th anniversary as a rich and viable organization. The 100th year celebration began in April 2013 in Lawrence, MA, where on Sunday, April 28, 2013, the C-78, Lawrence, MA and the New England District hosted a special memorial service where the members of the Supreme Council, New England District officers and members of the district gathered at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery in Andover, MA at the gravesite of Knights of Lithuania founder, Mykolas Norkunas, HM. Former National Spiritual Advisor Rev. Msgr. Albert Contons, HM conducted the prayer service, which included the recitation of “Milzinu kapai” written by Lithuania’s famous poet, Maironis. Council 78 President, David Boucher, and then New England District President, Vivian Rodgers, HM placed a tricolor floral wreath at the gravesite. A special anniversary wooden cross was created by woodcarver George Mikalauskas, Council 96, Dayton, OH. The gravesite memorial service concluded with the singing of the hymns “Amžiną Atilsį” and Marija, Marija” led by Maryte

Bizinkauskas, President of Council 1, Brockton, MA. An anniversary Mass of thanksgiving was celebrated at Corpus Christi parish at the Holy Rosary Church in Lawrence, MA.

In anticipation of our centennial, each district was requested to commemorate locally the founding of the Knights of Lithuania in a meaningful manner throughout 2013-2014. After almost two years of planning, discussing, fund-raising, hosting lunches/dinners, construction delays, and a little bit of red tape, the Mid America District’s project came to fruition. The Mid-America District wanted to immortalize the Knights of Lithuania’s centennial anniversary in a permanent way. They then voted to erect a shrine to Our Lady of Šiluva at St. Casimir’s Cemetery in Chicago, IL, to commemorate this historic anniversary. On Sunday, May 4, 2014, the Mid-America District celebration of the Knights of Lithuania’s centennial commenced. Although the early afternoon proved to be cloudy and cool, the air was filled with joy and

Page 8

excitement. Over 100 members of the Supreme Council, Mid-America District, Mid-Central District members who traveled to Chicago and the local Lithuanian community gathered in the chapel of St. Casimir’s Cemetery, where Mid-America District Spiritual Advisor and Our Lady of Šiluva Fund President, Rev. Anthony Markus, HM, led the participants in special prayers in honor of Our Lady of Šiluva, for petitioning for someone’s return to the Church, for ourselves and our Country. The hymn “Pulkim ant keliu” was sung.

At the conclusion of the prayers, the members went in a procession from the chapel to the shrine. During the procession the hymns “Sveika Marija, motina dievo” and “Per kiekviena nakti diena” were sung. The procession was led by a banner depicting the Blessed Mother with the Christ Child, a gilded icon of Our Lady of Šiluva, and the centennial anniversary wooden cross made by woodcarver George Mikalauskas, Council 96.

At the site of the shrine, Rev. Anthony Markus

explained the history of the apparition of Our Lady at Šiluva. He further explained the significant images along either side the monument and their importance to the Catholic history of Lithuania. The shrine is carved in the shape of the Cathedral of Šiluva, Lithuania. In the “windows” on either side of Our Lady’s image are smaller religious images. On the left side: The Divine Mercy, as depicted by St. Faustina, which actually took place in Vilnius, Lithuania when St Faustina was assigned there; the Mother and Child of Zemaiciu Kalvarija; the Blessed Mother and Child of Pazaislis; and the Hill of Crosses. On the right side: St. Casimir, Patron Saint of Lithuania and the Knights of Lithuania, who is buried in Vilnius Cathedral; The Madonna of the Gates of Dawn in Vilnius; the Blessed Mother of Trakai; and the Rupintojelis, (Worrying Christ). The main body of the shrine is flanked by two angels, one on each side. These angels, which were hand carved overseas are smaller copies of the angels placed at the entrance of the apparition chapel in Šiluva, Lithuania. The shrine is topped by a nickel plated, cast iron Lithuanian cross that was brought back from Lithuania by Rev. Anthony Markus.

Fr. Markus read the dedication inscription on the shrine’s base: “On this auspicious occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Knights of Lithuania, 1913-2013 its Mid America District dedicates this shrine. We are forever grateful to all those who have contributed both large and small, to its fruition. We especially forever remember: Aldona and Algerd Brazis, Petkus family, the Sisters of St. Casimir, the Chicago Lithuanian Women’s Club, Robert Damasauskas, the Knights of Lithuania Foundation, Inc., Regina Juskaitis and Family, the Our Lady of Šiluva Fund, Jack & Loretta Stukas, James & Joann Vilutis, Joseph & Mary Zailskis and Glenn Perutis.”

Dedication service begin with all reciting the Prayers to Our Lady of Siluva in the St. Casimir Cemetery Chapel.

On the backside of the shrine is the history of Our Lady’s Apparition at Šiluva.

The formal dedication and blessing of the shrine took place when Rev. Markus offered the dedication prayers and then sprinkled it with holy water. The ceremony concluded with the participants’ singing the “Hymn to Our Lady of Šiluva,” composed by our very own Faustas Strolia, HM. This was truly an emotional event. There were not many dry eyes of those who gathered for this once in a lifetime dedication and blessing.

The celebration continued with a celebratory luncheon and raffle at The Double Tree Hotel in Alsip, IL. Over fifty Mid-America District members, Supreme Council Officers, and friends gathered together to share in fellowship. Robert A. Martin, Jr., HM, opened the program and welcomed the guests. Mid-America

District President, Aldona Zajauskas, then greeted the attendees and spoke of the Mid-America District Our Lady of Šiluva Shrine project. Rev. Anthony Markus then gave the invocation. After a scrumptious and filling luncheon, Robert A. Martin, Jr., HM, introduced special guests: Knights of Lithuania Supreme Council President, Regina Juska-Svoba, HM; Knights of Lithuania Supreme Council Financial Secretary, June Griener; and New England District President, Shirley Musumeci. The afternoon concluded with the long awaited raffle. The ever energetic team of Lexie Rudmin and Liza Macke conducted the raffle to perfection. With their infectious smiles and enthusiasm, they called the winning numbers and assisted in distributing the prizes. The winners were pleased with their gifts. Any proceeds from the luncheon and raffle will be used for the landscaping and up keep of the Our Lady of Šiluva Shrine at St. Casimir’s Cemetery in Chicago, IL. For this event a special memento program booklet was prepared for the blessing and dedication of the Shrine to Our Lady of Šiluva. The booklet contains the prayers that were recited and the hymns that were sung. It also contains monument statistics: the base is made of jet black granite; the angels on either side of the monument are made of imperial gray granite; and the Lithuanian cross is nickel plated cast iron. The approximate weight of the Shrine is 2½ tons. Its measurements are from the base to top of the cross - 72”x 16” x 84”. The Our Lady of Šiluva Shrine was designed by Maurice Moore Memorials of Chicago Ridge, IL. The total cost of this monumental undertaking was in excess of $23,000.00. In addition each luncheon guest received a frosted glass votive holder with votive candle depicting the image of Our Lady of Šiluva. The Officers and Members of the Knights of the Mid-America District thanked all those who participated in the dedication of the Shrine to Our Lady of Šiluva and all those who made the dedication possible! This shrine will forever commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Knights of Lithuania

organization. It was truly a memorable and blessed weekend!

MAMD President, Aldona Zajauskas welcomes everyone to the luncheon.

U.S. House of Representatives passes “Black Ribbon Day” legislation recognizing Victims of Soviet Communist and Nazi regimes

Reprinted here from the website of JBANC with our thanks to it’s staff. For additional information concerning the Baltic nations please visit jbanc.org

(Washington, DC) – Legislation designating August 23 as a “Black Ribbon Day” commemorating the victims of both Soviet communist and Nazi terror passed yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives. It is a culmination of an ongoing two-year effort by the Joint Baltic American National Committee, Inc. (JBANC) seeking passage of this legislation. Congressman John Shimkus of Illinois, the co-chairman of the House Baltic Caucus, sponsored the legislation and effectively shepherded its passage in the House. The legislation, part of a National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 4435), will now be taken up by the Senate. A conference committee of both houses will work out differences. On the eve of the bill’s passage, JBANC contacted all House member offices individually to muster needed additional support for the resolution’s passage. JBANC stressed the importance of passing the legislation this year since it marks the 75th year since the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact in 1939. The pact divided Europe between Nazi Germany and the USSR and ushered in WWII. Ultimately this led to the 50 year Soviet occupation of the Baltic countries. This year will also mark 25 years since the “Baltic Way” was organized in 1989. This human chain united some two million Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians in an iconic demonstration of their resolve for freedom and independence. JBANC’s appeal to Congress also highlighted the ongoing violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty and Putin’s concurrent aggression, a haunting reminder of Hitler’s and Stalin’s maneuvers leading to the outbreak of the Second World War. Over the past several years the European Parliament, Council of Europe, Canada’s Parliament, as well a number of countries in Europe have passed similar Black Ribbon Day resolutions to achieve a historical “reconciliation based on truth and remembrance.” In passing this legislation, the United States Congress unambiguously asserts that the victims of the most destructive regimes in history will not be forgotten and will be remembered by future generations as well. Rep. Shimkus introduced the Black Ribbon Day resolution in July 2013, and about 50 co-sponsors signed on. The language of that bill, with some modifications, was adopted in the military authorization bill. An earlier version of the Black Ribbon Day resolution was introduced in the previous Session of Congress in 2012, with significant input from JBANC. JBANC and other Baltic-Americans organizations and individuals actively joined in supporting this legislation. JBANC represents the Estonian American National Council, Inc., the American Latvian Association in the U.S., and the Lithuanian American Council, Inc.

Knights of Lithuania Hartford Council Celebrates 100 years

Received from Shirley Musumeci

The Berželis Dancers

On May 18, 2014 the Hartford council of the Knights of Lithuania celebrated their 100th anniversary. After a particularly harsh winter and cold, rainy spring, it seemed as though the Lord smiled down on them as it was surely one of the most pleasant days of the year, with a sunny, crystal blue sky and soft, refreshing breeze.

Judy Landers

A procession of members, led by president, Carol Spakauskas, entered Holy Trinity Church for the 10:30 AM Mass celebrated by Rev. Charles E. Jacobs. Mariam and Xavier Dembele carried Holy pictures to be displayed at the front of the church. Spiritual advisor, Brian Daigle, assisted in the Mass as alter server.

After Mass the group of nearly ninety celebrants retired to the church hall where they enjoyed a Lithuanian feast. Joining the Hartford council, were members from three other K of L councils: Worcester, MA, Waterbury, CT and Bridgeport, CT. Hartford was honored to have past NED president, Vivian Rogers, HM and her husband Al among the attendees. Janina Nawarskas from the Waterbury council was on hand and gave an informative talk on her self-published book, A Child Lost. Various Lithuanian appetizers were on hand, followed by a champagne toast and a sumptuous meal. In addition to a cake for dessert was the special treat, raguolis, a Lithuanian tree cake made

by member, Joseph Liūdžius. The Lithuanian liqueur, Virytas, was prepared and served by Shirley Musumeci, president of the New England District and member of the Hartford council. The Berželis Dancers, a Lithuanian folk dance group, provided the cultural entertainment in a manner most charming, graceful and interactive. One of the dancers was none other than our very own Waterbury council president, Linas Balsys!

The hall was brightly and festively decorated in the colors of the Lithuanian flag: red, green and golden yellow for this occasion. Bouquets of red carnations with accents of white baby’s breath were on each table with the Lithuanian and American flags. A table displayed various memorabilia from the council over the 100 years, including recent communication with our Holy Father, Pope Francis. A fascinating and impressive exhibit of Lithuanian artifacts was provided by past president, Judy Landers.

Before the festivities were over, a number of door prizes were randomly selected and given out to the happy recipients. The Hartford council was formed on May 18, 1914 at Holy Trinity Church by some of its parishioners and grew to over 200 members before WWI. Over the years it waxed and waned until today as it counts 61 members from 20 Connecticut towns and three states. On average 20-30 members attend the monthly membership meetings.

Knightly Code of Conduct submitted by Shirley Musumeci, New England District President

The following information is taken from Wikipedia: “Chivalry, or the chivalric code, is a code of conduct associated with the medieval institution of knighthood. The Knight's Code of Chivalry was a moral and honorable system that stated all knights should protect others who cannot protect themselves, such as widows, children, and elders. All knights needed to have the strength and skills to fight wars in the Middle Ages; they not only had to be strong but they were also extremely disciplined and were expected to use their power to protect the weak and defenseless. Knights vowed to be loyal, generous, and "of noble bearing". Knights were

required to tell the truth and respect the honour of women. Knights vowed to protect the weak and guard the honor of fellow knights. They were to obey those in authority, and to never refuse a challenge from an equal. Knights lived by honor and for glory. Knights were to fear God and maintain His Church. Knights always kept their faith and never turned their back on a foe. Knights despised pecuniary reward. They persevered to the end in any enterprise begun.”

Our Roman Catholic faith and values dictate that we demonstrate brotherly love and aspire to walk in the path of love and light as taught to us by our Savior, Jesus Christ. But let’s be honest. In any organization, Roman Catholic or not, some of the more base elements of human nature may show up. Jealousy, meanness, verbal abuse, impatience, obstinacy, revenge, and betrayal to name a few, can raise their ugly heads. Not one of us is perfect and it would behoove us all to question whether we have been guilty of any of these traits. Fortunately, for the most part, our members engage in a pleasant social interchange, work together cooperatively for the higher good and enjoy the camaraderie. So it is a pity that the inevitable few curmudgeons have never learned the joy to be gained from showing simple human kindness and support to one another. Life is short, yet there are so many opportunities for us to make a positive difference in the world, even in the smallest benevolent acts.

"Perfection is not a polished thing. It is often simply something that is sincerely meant. Perfection is a job complete, praise given, prayer heard. It can be kindness shown, thanks offered up. Perfection is what we discover in each other, what we see reflected back. Oh! And if perfection eludes us, that doesn't matter. For what we have within the moment is enough."

~Jennifer Worth When encountering the vitriol or negativity of another, it is best to redirect that destructive energy. Instead, consider ways to uplift the precious souls in our midst and show generosity of spirit whenever possible. Take comfort and inspiration from the goodness we see in the vast majority. As Blessed George Matulaitis once proclaimed, “Overcome evil with good.” What a beautiful and powerful phrase that is. Life is a series of trials and lessons to be learned. Let us persevere to be gracious learners, forgiving companions, and energetic followers of Jesus. To be a Knight is a noble calling. Let us be honorable and guard the honor of fellow Knights. Now that would be perfection.

District & Council News Irene Macke – Council News Editor

Amber District (Amber) C-3 Philadelphia, PA Stephany Gutauskas In February Alberta Weigand left the cold and dreary northern climate and went on a warm and pleasant 10-day Caribbean cruise. What a way to beat the winter blahs!

Council members supported St. George Parish by attending the 78th annual pre-Lenten banquet held on March 2 at the parish hall. Williamson Caterers provided the salad, ham, chicken asparagus, sweet potatoes, ice cream, and a variety of cakes. Lucky Dolores Herbert and Mary Czupich won $20 gift certificates as door prizes. An afternoon of dancing concluded the event.

On March 9 a group of council members attended the 11:00 a.m. Mass at St. George Church in Philadelphia to celebrate St. Casimir’s Day. Congratulations to sisters Michaeline Disston and Jean Yodis, who received their First Degrees that day.

Condolences go to the family of Walter Mameniskis Sr., a former president of C-3, who passed away on March 11, 2014. May God grant him eternal rest.

Sunshine Chairperson Ausra Maknys held raffles for the benefit of Lithuanian Children’s Relief Inc. in February 2014. Walter Svekla won a large red mug and Marge Petronis won candy roses and air freshener. In March Mary Pacesa and Mary Czupich won St. Patrick’s Day decorations. In April Chris Moncrief won a black duffel bag, and Alberta Weigand won a wine caddy and a wooden PEACE desk sign.

Lithuanian Affairs Chairperson Irene Svekla brought council members’ attention to two notable Lithuanians: Nerijus Numavivicius, the first Lithuanian billionaire, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, an athlete whose number, 11, was retired by the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team. Hearty congratulations go to Victor Balten, who won the $300 first prize in the March 2014 Amber District raffle drawing. Council members were ecstatic that our Lithuanian Pope John Paul II was canonized on April 27, 2014. We can now pray to our own special modern-day saint to intercede for all our intentions. Mid-Central District (MCD) C-96 Dayton, OH Fran Petkus The Michael Petkus Bus made another K of L trip May 2–4, 2014. This trip covered the K of L Supreme Council meeting, the MCD Spring Meeting, and we had the honor of participating in the MAMD’s Our Lady of Šiluva Shrine dedication. Father Tony Markus, HM, MAMD’s spiritual advisor, began the program with all gathering in the chapel of St. Casimir Cemetery. Prayers were followed with the singing of “Pulkim Ant Keliu.” The procession lined up with Michael Petkus at the head carrying the cross, Robert Petkus carrying the Our Lady of Šiluva banner, and the Fletchers, Joseph, Alex, Adam, and Nathan, carrying the Our Lady of Šiluva icon placed on a special wooden platform. As we proceeded to the shrine, participants sang “Sveika Marija,

Motina Dievo” and “Per Kiekviena Nakti Diena.” After prayers at the shrine, we closed the services singing the “Hymn to Our Lady of Šiluva,” lyrics and music by HM Faustas Strolia. The shrine is beautiful and Our Lady is surrounded by side images of Divine Mercy, Žemaičiu Kalvarija, Our Lady of Pažaislis, Hill of Crosses, St. Casimir, Aušros Vartai, Our Lady of Trakai, and Rupintojelis. Each of these images was selected because of its importance to the religious history of Lithuania. The MAMD’s shrine, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the K of L, is something they can be proud of in the years ahead. A job well done. The Supreme Council meeting of May 3 went very well. Much was discussed and much will be presented to the delegates at the 101st National Convention hosted by C-133, Los Angeles, CA. The MCD’s early evening session also went well. Important district items were voting on the 101st K of L National Convention ad and delegates. The second part of our spring meeting will be held in Dayton on May 18, 2014. MCD Ritual Chair Lauretta Pant will oversee the candidates receiving their Third Degree medals. We will close that program with a kaffee klatsch after Mass and our Annual MCD Raffle Award. The MCD’s Fall Meeting site will be Dayton, OH. Council 96 held a Palm Sunday Super Kaffee Klatsch on the 13th. Once again, Ways and Means Chair Anne Louise Tucker out did herself by providing many, many opportunities to win something. There were too many winners to

catch all the names, but Judy Petrokas was the big 50/50 winner. Thanks go to Anne Louise and her committee. Congratulations to Danny Tucker on his successful completion of part 1 of an EMT program. He was recognized by Sinclair Community College by being placed on the dean’s list. Best wishes for a very successful career. Proud parents are Anne Louise and Ron Tucker. Mid-America District (MAMD)

C-112 Chicago, IL Susan Binkis

The cold winter months did not slow down Chicago’s Council 112. Our annual Christmas Party provided an afternoon of warmth and cheer for council members and guests. Sister Joanna Marie conducted her raffle on behalf of Sunlight Orphan Aid, and thanks to the generosity of prize donors and raffle purchasers, we were once again able to fulfill our financial commitment to that organization.

First and Second degrees were awarded to Janina Juoza and Angela Lawler by Ritual Chairlady Julie Zakarka. Saulius Kuprys received his 3rd degree at the Mid-America District meeting held in March. Also in March, several K of L members were spotted at the Sisters of St. Casimir Auxiliary Games Party held at the SSC Motherhouse. C-112 members Paul Binkis, Susan Binkis and Mary Anna Gercius were instrumental in helping to make the event a success.

Several of our members look forward to attending the dedication of the K of L monument to Our Lady of Šiluva at St. Casimir Cemetery on May 4th. C-112 is proud to have had a small part in

the establishment of this important memorial. New England District (NED) Carol Treciokas

The NED board met on March 8, 2014, at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception in Putnam, CT, to discuss items to cover at our spring convention. We voted to honor HM Msgr. Contons with a gift and Mass card for his 90th birthday.

On April 26 we held the NED Spring Convention in South Boston under the leadership of Shirley Musumeci and hosted by C-17 President Phyllis Gendreau. The convention drew 50 attendees. Gertrude Decrescenzo from C-78 Lawrence received her Third Degree at the convention Mass. Congratulations, Gert! The gathering enjoyed warm hospitality, delicious Lithuanian comfort food, and the camaraderie of friends from near and far, thanks to the tireless efforts of the South Boston council and the skillful leadership of their president, Phyllis Gendreau. NED President Shirley Musumeci said that the NED is here to support us. She asked us to give her ideas, suggestions, issues, complaints, problems, solutions, etc., with the intent of working together for the good of the organization. Shirley pointed out declining K of L NED membership and ways and means to recruit and retain members. Volunteers were sought for developing an NED website. Shirley has already created a K of L NED page on Facebook. NED finances were mapped out to the attendees on a handout prepared by the president, which showed how funds were raised and spent in 2013. A discussion of council dues paid to the NED was held

and a motion passed to vote on an increase at our next convention.

We also discussed going to Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, NH, under the direction of Bill and Brone Wisnauskas. An October date has not yet been set for the NED Cultural Festival at Maironis Park in Shrewsbury. However, we have received generous donations from individuals and councils for NED raffle prizes at the Fest. Plans for our annual retreat in Kennebunk, ME, on June 20-22, 2014, were announced. Phyllis Gendreau and Barbra Trybe will be delegates to the national convention in Glendale, CA, on July 23–27. We also were reminded of the Lithuanian Friendship Picnic at the Sisters in Putnam picnic on July 27. Meanwhile, under the direction of the Supreme Council, Michael Petkus has moved the archives from Putnam, CT, to Dayton, OH, so that Norma Petkus can properly catalog, organize, and store the materials. Our NED Fall Convention will be hosted by C-7 Waterbury, CT.

The following 100th anniversary celebrations are coming up: C-6 at Holy Trinity Church, Hartford, CT, May 19, 2014; C-27 Norwood at the Venice, 1086 Washington Street, September 13, 2014; C-17 at St. Peter’s, 75 Flaherty Way, South Boston, November 1, 2014; St. Anthony’s Church, Ansonia, CT, November 15, 2015.

C-6 Hartford, CT Agnes Gagnon On March 4 our council attended a Mass at Holy Trinity Church honoring Lithuania’s patron saint, St. Casimir. After Mass we met at the Hook and Ladder Restaurant for a lunch buffet. A surprise bonus for those attending was a paczki doughnut provided by Kay Urban. Spiritual Director Brian

Daigle spoke on Sts. Patrick and Joseph. As a result of her CT Home Energy Audit through CL&P, Shirley Musumeci encouraged our membership to consider signing up. If a referral is obtained and the work is completed, a $30 rebate will be received; in her case, she would contribute it to our council. We were saddened to hear of the death of Sister Mary Louise’s brother, Eugene Rouleau. Our Calendar of Events notes many events throughout the Northeast celebrating the 100th anniversary of the K of L. We have set May 18 as our time to commemorate this milestone. Receiving their well-earned degrees were Teresita Petravicius, First Degree, and Valdota Spakauska, Second Degree. Congratulations to both. Sue Gudaitis’s topic of the day was flax. She stated that the fields of blue flowers are no longer in Lithuania. Production has been moved to China, where it is grown, and machines now do the work of spinning. In the past, all work was done by manual labor, which is too cost-prohibitive today. Treasure your linen if it dates before 1980. Following in his mother’s (C-6 Secretary Leona Gwaz) footsteps is Xavier Dembele. He recently was awarded $300 for the essay he submitted to Vytis. Among the many team sports in the Summer Olympics, basketball is a winner in Lithuania. Now in Connecticut we have two NCAA champions: the University of Connecticut boys and girls teams.

Much of our entertainment in the fall/winter season is watching the UConn Huskies on TV. Many of

our members displayed their support by attending the parade held in Hartford on April 13. We were eyeball-to-eyeball with the double-decker buses carrying the players and staff as we stood behind a sign expressing our “Thanks.” C-10 Athol-Gardner, MA Vincukas Congratulations to Draugas for printing a monthly English/Lithuanian Draugas for those who do not read Lithuanian. I have read Draugas for more than 50 years. The Worcester Telegram had several pages in the travel section on Lithuania and Latvia that included interesting places to see, hotels and restaurants, and a half-page photo of Vilnius Cathedral Square and one of Gates of Dawn Shrine. Tourists to Lithuania increased to 2 ½ million last year. The Women’s Guild of St. Francis held a corned-beef dinner recently and 133 persons attended, providing a profit of $1,600. Armand Bouthillier was the chef, assisted by guild members as kitchen help and servers. An Irish instrumental trio entertained. It seems that there is no end to the affairs at St. Francis. Bravo! Reverend John Petrauskas, MIC, a native of Gardner, long-time head master of Marianapolis Prep School, and formerly of St. Casimir’s, celebrated his 98th birthday on May 13 as well as the 71st anniversary of his ordination. The Lord rewarded him with a long, fruitful priestly life. God bless, Father! Reverend Msgr. Albert Contons marked his 90th birthday. He concelebrated a Mass of thanksgiving at St. Peter’s Church in South Boston. Our K of L

spiritual advisor has devoted himself to our motto: “For God and Country.” Best wishes are sent to Rev. Albin Janiunas also on his 90th birthday. Both were ordained on the same day. God bless you both. We in New England had a brutal, bitter winter with record-breaking snowstorms and cold, while in Lithuania, summer mushrooms were picked in December along with spring flowers in bloom. The winter rye and wheat were a 90 percent loss because of the lack of snow and warmth. We wish Dr. Marie Shatos a complete recovery following surgery. Marie is a lab doctor in the stem division at Massachusetts General, semiretired, and a consultant. People in Lithuania are very jittery about Russia’s aggression in the Crimea and now in the Ukraine. C-26 Worcester, MA Ruta Thank goodness winter is finally over??? This year we in the East had more snow and cold than in many years. There were times when snow fell every other day. We envied friends who escaped to the South. Luckily, the first 2014 meeting was in March and St. Patrick was honored with decorations and various green desserts. In April, lovely Easter items and desserts made one think of spring. We voted to change our meeting start times to 1:30 p.m. Since night driving is becoming a problem for our older members, we hoped that the change would increase attendance at the meetings. It seems to be working. A Penny Sale Social was held with great success. Wonderful prizes were donated by the members.

Members placed their purchased tickets in a little bag in front of the item they wished to win. Vivian Rodgers, assisted by Barbara Thompson, was in charge of this unique raffle. It was a fun evening that provided funds to send to an orphan that we sponsor in Lithuania. For the last few months, our members have been busy attending and participating in various events. St. Casimir, Lithuania’s patron saint was first honored with a special Lithuanian Mass on Saturday at St. John’s with St. John’s Lithuanian choir singing appropriate hymns. Many of the members are from our council. A reception followed. The next day, there was a St. Casimir’s Feast Day Dinner that offered “desros ir kopustai,” chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables, dessert, and coffee. Frank Statkus opened with a greeting that stated that March 2 was declared Lithuanian World Prayer Day by Archbishop Tamkevicius in Lithuania. After a delicious lunch, St. Casimir’s Lithuanian choir sang some old-time favorite Lithuanian songs. Many C-26 members also belong to this choir. Steve Walinsky presented a plan by Fr. Madden, Steve, and a special board to send money to Lithuania to set up a food pantry at St. Michael the Archangel parish. A large sum of money will be sent to establish the project and then so much a month thereafter. In addition to supplying food to the needy, social services will be provided. Our spiritual advisor, Fr. Richard Jakubauskas, extended his greetings and closed with a prayer. It was a wonderful afternoon spent with Father and friends. The Kaziuko Mugė (the Lithuanian Scouts Annual Fund Raiser) was held at Maironis

Park. Member Irene Markevicius, who is also the Atlantic Region Worcester Troop Leader, was in charge of this event. It featured Lithuanian crafts, such as a special Lithuanian Easter egg-coloring demonstration, amber jewelry, Lithuanian wedding cakes (sakotis), homemade baked goods, raffles, etc. Of course, the ever popular Lithuanian meal was served. Entertainment was supplied by the delightful children of the newly formed Lithuanian school. Three C-26 members, who are also very active in our scouts, were awarded special Appreciation Medals for their years of scouting service. Recipients were Bruno Naras, Danute Marcinkevicius, and Ray Jakubauskas. Genevieve Naras, recently on our sick list, was there supporting her husband and having a wonderful time. Lithuanians were honored by being assigned the first Easter Mass at 8:00 a.m. at St. John’s. Many from the Lithuanian community attended. St. John’s Lithuanian choir sang several Easter hymns: “Linksma Diena,” “Aušros Žvaigzde,” “Jau Kėles Kristus Alleliuia.” Accompaniments of flute and special keyboard music and the blending of singing were beautiful. Congratulations to Barbara Thompson for her hard work on this inspiring Mass and keeping our Lithuanian community together. Immediately after Mass, before leaving the choir loft, the choir cracked colored eggs. It was good to see this tradition continued. Marion Racicot has joined our sick list, first with bad colds and then breaking her hip in a fall. She is in rehab at Radius and hopes to be home shortly–our prayers are with her. With great sorrow, we announce that our

long-time member Ann (Luckasavage) Bender recently passed away. She was a member for more than 75 years and attained honorary membership in 1968. She was a willing worker, participating in our activities and on the Supreme Council. She will be missed by her family and friends. Our sincere condolences and prayers are offered to the family. C-27 Norwood, MA Carol Treciokas On March 2, 2014, Jane and Marcia Perednia and I enjoyed the St. Casimir’s Day celebration given by the wonderful C-1 team of Brockton at St. Michael’s in Avon. We enjoyed the entertainment and the kugelis, kielbasa, and kapusta. Later in March, Patty Adakonis went to Providence, RI, and learned how to decorate lovely Easter eggs with bee’s wax under the guidance of Marci Couitt, Ruth Krecioch’s daughter. Providence is C-103. On April 13, Charles and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at Raffael’s in Walpole with family and friends. Betty Skricki will be moving to Baltimore, MD, sometime in May to be near her daughter, Irene. We will miss her companionship, but Irene will be happy. Irene DeShiro has once again volunteered her yard in Foxboro for the site of C-27's yard sale to be held on May 17. This enables us to help our council treasury.

Vincukas Remembers Remembering My Siblings

My oldest brother, Anthony was left blind after a near death bout with spinal meningitis at age 1. At an early age he was placed in a blind institution in Farmington, CT. At age 18 he returned to our family. I was 5 at that time. I recall taking him by the hand and leading him about until he became familiar with the home. I would sit on his lap and teach him Lithuanian as best as I could. My parents would smile at the young teacher and his progress. Several years later Mary Kane, the town’s social worker, placed him in a blind work facility in Pittsfield. Gifted, he played in a 3-man band on weekends as a drummer. He married Irene and re-settled in Fall River and worked in a similar facility. He worked there to age 76. His best friend was his radio. He loved sports and could tell you the names and positions, averages of the Red Sox and Patriot players. I called him a living saint, not outright religious, be never cursed the darkness. He could be an example to those who pretend various false illness and demand welfare disability. We loved you, Tony, rest in peace.

Amelia was 2½ years older than I. Growing up how I loved that cute blond even though she was a rascal at times and I mischievous. I told people when I’m all grown up I’m going to marry her. We made the May and October altars and she led us in the Litany of the Blessed Mary. Like Mom she had a great personality and had a host of friends. She was president of her graduation high school class. Not only was she a scholar, athlete, bowled, golfed, played the organ and loved Foxwoods, bridge and pitch.

Twice engaged she finally met Mr. Right, a 6’ 3” Lithuanian, John Budrevich Budwick and raised three great children. Her dedication to bowling and the

youth in town gave her the honor of being inducted in the Greater Gardner Bowling Hall of Fame. Owner of the popular Gardner Ten Pins she passed the business over to Steve. During World War II she worked at the towns Ration Board and was a reporter for the “Gardner News”. We lost her 10 years ago. I grieved her loss but had to let go. Su Dieviu, Sis. Bernie was 7½ years my senior. He was the family scholar, handsome, athletic, and soft spoken and the perfect gentleman he broke many girls hearts, I was told. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts he landed a great position with DuPont de Moors in Aitkens, SC, as a chemist in the Atomic Hydrogen plant, later become a supervisor. Growing up when I was reading the comics he read science fiction and worked on his chemistry set. He would have been the perfect priest and having four years of Latin in High School but I guess it was not his vocation. I know Mom loved the four of us but I believe he was Mom’s favorite and Father’s as well. I forgive you Mom. He lived to age 90 leaving his wife and three great children. Su Dieviu Bernie, until we meet again in the next world.

On Sunday, March 16th, over 50 Council 141 Knights of Lithuania members and guests gathered to honor St. Casimir. The celebration began with Mass with scripture readings in Lithuanian read by Helen Simanis. After Mass, Fr. Elio Sosa and Deacon William Miranda led the after Mass procession to the Monsignor Prankus Hall to begin the celebration. The hall was beautifully decorated with balloons reflecting the colors of the Lithuanian flag. Father Elio blessed the food and Council 141 President, Barbara Schmidt, presented a brief history of the life of St. Casimir. After Barbara's presentation, everyone selected a dyed hard-boiled egg and the traditional egg tapping ritual began. After many victories, Irene Meizies of Council 50 – New Haven, CT, emerged as the overall victor for the day. After a tasty luncheon, our special guest speaker, Connecticut based author, Janina Nawarskas, shared some stories from her book A Child Lost: My Life's Journey from War-Torn Europe to Proud American about her early childhood in Lithuania and Eastern Europe as an innocent child displaced at the end of World War II. Janina's amazing stories about her experiences during those times, and her love for her adopted country, America, touched all of us deeply and we are grateful to Janina for sharing her life experiences with the council members and guests. Our St. Casimir's Day celebration ended with a closing prayer.

News from JBANC JOINT BALTIC AMERICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE - Keeping Washington informed on Baltics since 1961

JBANC (the Joint Baltic American National Committee) is a non-profit organization that monitors issues affecting Baltic-American communities in the United States and the nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. JBANC helps to coordinate Baltic – American activities in Washington, DC with the U.S. Congress, administration, NGO’s and other groups.

U.S. House of Representatives passes “Black Ribbon Day” legislation recognizing Victims of Soviet Communist and Nazi regimes

Legislation designating August 23 as a “Black Ribbon Day” commemorating the victims of both Soviet communist and Nazi terror passed in the U.S. House of Representatives on May 22.

JBANC stressed the importance of passing the legislation this year since it marks the 75th year since the signing of the Molotov-

Ribbentrop Pact in 1939. Read more: http://app.expressemailmarketing.com/get.link?linkid=6895583&subscriberid=147933415&campaignid=1878222&linkurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.jbanc.org%2f%3fpage%3dblog%26amp%3bv%3d4%26amp%3bid%3d34

State Department officials reaffirm U.S. and NATO engagement to Baltics and the region

On May 30, JBANC together with colleagues from the Central and East European Coalition (CEEC) met with three State Department officials - Eric Rubin (Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs), Thomas O. Melia, (Deputy Assistant Secretary of Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor) and Mike Uyehara (Director, Office of European Affairs, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor).

In the hour and a half long meeting, the participants mainly discussed issues related to the elections in Ukraine, and the situation in the region and also in the Baltics. Emphasis was made that LNG and broadcasting issues have to be among the main priorities to fight against dependence on Russia energy and Kremlin disinformation. The State Department officials also provided detailed

insight of the work that the United States has done to support Ukraine and to bolster regional security. CEEC members and JBANC also discussed their concerns and plans for further actions.

Baltic Solidarity for Ukraine: Let’s not let down our guard!

No one appreciates better than the Baltics what a policy of non-recognition means. The U.S. stood by Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania for 50 years, to delegitimize the cruel, unjust, and illegal Soviet take-over of the Baltics. We owe it to our Ukrainian and Crimean compatriots to also stand up for them according to the same principles of freedom and justice that were maintained on behalf of the Baltics. We must not let Putin’s terror tactics stand. In working for these goals, JBANC has many tools at its disposal to disseminate accurate and truthful information, to network with other organizations and individuals, and to use

these resources to project the influence of the Baltic-American community in Washington, DC.
