Valley Summer Theatre announces plans for summer 2013

Wolfville, NS -  Valley Summer Theatre’s Executive Producer, Bruce Klinger has announced scaled

down plans for 2013.

While the company did have larger plans to build on the success of its first four seasons, the lack of

financial support from the provincial government for this summer has meant shelving some ideas,

and a concentration on things the company would be able to accomplish with a smaller budget.

“We started this project in the belief the town of Wolfville and the King’s County area offer one of

the most promising locations for summer theatre in all of Atlantic Canada” Klinger said. “The

success of our first four seasons certainly reinforced those beliefs. However, the Nova Scotia

government’s programs and policies for the cultural sector make our job much more difficult.”

Klinger says that, while he is clearly disappointed with presenting a scaled back program, he is none-

the less very pleased with what Valley Summer Theatre will be able to offer. “ When plans first

started to be made for a fifth season we wanted to bring back some of the people who had made the

first four years such a success”, he says, “and some of that will be able to happen”.

Valley Summer Theatre’s first season featured a limited run of A.R. Gurney ’s classic play Love

Letters . This summer the company will reprise that play for three performances on July 20th at 8:00

pm and July 21st at 2 & 8:00 pm. Love Letters will be directed by Valley Summer Theatre’s Artistic

Advisor Pamela Halstead, who has directed a play in every Valley Summer Theatre season, and will

feature Carolyn Hetherington and Richard Donat. Carolyn starred in Valley Summer Theatre’s

inaugural production of The Gin Game and was most recently seen in Driving Miss Daisy which

was awarded Outstanding Production at Nova Scotia’s 2012 Merritt Awards. Her portrayal of

“Daisy ” also won Carolyn Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress, which was the second

Merritt Award Carolyn has received as Outstanding Lead Actress. Her first award was for the title

character in the Ship’s Company Theatre’s production of Lillibet .

Richard Donat’s special presentation of Richard Donat Reads Leacock was featured in Valley

Summer Theare’s 2011 season. Richard is a Kentville, Nova Scotia native who has worked in film,

television and theatre throughout Canada. He is currently filming the fourth season of the hit SyFy

and Showcase Canada series, Haven .

“Carolyn and Richard will make a terrific pairing for this heart-warming show which will treat

audiences to a combination of great writing and great acting which we hope has been a hallmark of

Valley Summer Theatre’s first four seasons” Klinger says.

The weekend of July 26th to 28th will feature the third instalment of the Wingfield Farm series of

plays, Wingfield ’   s Folly . Valley Summer Theatre was delighted to be able to feature the first

instalment, Letter from Wingfield Farm , in its 2010 season and the second in the series,

Wingfield ’   s Progress , was presented last year. “ When thinking about bringing back people who

had been important in the company ’s first four seasons it was impossible not to think about Rod

Beattie and his incredible collection of Wingfield characters” Klinger says. “ We are delighted to be

able to bring Rod back for a limited run of the third Wingfield play. Given that the first two

instalments each sold about twice as many tickets as will be available for this production, I hope

people will act quickly to get their seats so they will not be disappointed”.

In addition to Love Letters and Wingfield ’   s Folly , Carolyn Hetherington will also be doing a

special reading of her new play, Women Who Shout at the Stars , on Tuesday July 23rd at 8:00 pm.

Women Who Shout at the Stars is the story of three strong and passionate women bound together

by tragedy, determination and love - remembered by Hetherington with deep affection and a dash of

irreverent humour.

Valley Summer Theatre produces plays each year in Acadia Cinema’s Al Whittle Theatre, which

provides a perfect intimate location for the type of theatre the company wants to showcase.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the Box of Delights Bookstore (466 Main Street in

Wolfville); by calling toll free to 1-877-845-1341 or online from  www.ticketpro.ca

Ticket prices for Love Letters and Wingfield ’   s Folly will be $30.00 Regular and $23.00 for

Students. Two play subscriptions will be available. The special reading of Women Who Shout at

the Stars  will be $12.00 Regular and $10.00 for Students.
