Vol. 12, Issue - 4, December 2012 The sugarcane is an important cash crop grown worldwide. It is a long duration crop and it interacts with all the seasons viz., rainy, winter and summer during its life cycle. Globally, the area of sugarcane is rising in response to increasing demand for bio-ethanol and sugar. In some countries, trend towards mono-cropping of sugarcane is likely to have major impacts on soil health & agro-ecology and effect of climate change & global warming. Therefore, a significant impact on its production and sugar yield is expected in near future. Global warming and climate change will also trigger major changes in geographical distribution and population dynamics of insect pests, insect – host plant interactions, activity and occurrence of natural enemies. This will affect both crop production and food security. Therefore, there is a need to assess the efficacy of various pest management technologies under diverse environmental conditions and develop appropriate strategies for pest management and development of suitable varieties tolerant to changed climatic conditions. Soil health, cropping season, weed, disease & pest management, nutrient management and proper water management seems to be the effective measures for obtaining high yield in future. Sugar production in India will be 15% less during 2016-17 season compared with the previous year due to drought in Karnataka and Maharashtra. India’s sugar production has decreased from 28.3 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 25.1 million tonnes in 2015-16. It is forecasted that sugar mills are likely to produce sufficient sugar for domestic consumption in the sugar season 2017-18. All these issues were highlighted at the forefront of 40 th Annual General Meeting of the Institute held on 27 th March 2017. It was a gathering of all sugarcane growers and management of sugar mills from the State in which VSI announced the awards for sugarcane farmers for producing highest yield of sugarcane per hectare, best performing sugar mills, distilleries and personnel with respect to technical efficiency award, financial management award, oos bhusan award etc. Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr. Devendra Fadnavis and Hon. President of VSI, Mr. Sharad Pawar and other dignitaries were present for this function and they opined about challenges and improvements required in the sugar sector. In the introductory address by Dr. DB Phonde,Sr. Scientist & Head, Soil Science, Agril. Microbiologyand Agronomy section explained the importance ofagro-industrial waste management. The imbalanceuse of inorganic fertilizers has created the soilproblems like immobilization of nutrients in soil &salinity. The insufficient organic matter also affectsthe soil fertility. Approximately 6.5 million tonne ofsugarcane trash is being produced every year and mostof the residues are usually burnt in the field. Besidesthe loss of organic matter and plant nutrients, burningof crop residues also causes atmospheric pollutiondue to the emission of toxic gases that poses threatto humans and ecosystem. He explained the

importance of composting of cane trash in situ andPress Mud Cake (PMC) along with spent-wash atcomposting yard for preparation of good qualitycompost.

Mrs. Rutuja More, Scientist & Head, AgricultureMicrobiology section talked on agro-industrial wastemanagement in sugarcane agriculture and informedregarding the importance of different microorganismsfor decomposition of agro-industrial wastes andpreparation of quality compost, its enrichment bydifferent bio-fertilizers and the application of the samefor maintaining soil & plant health. She also briefedabout the microbial inoculants particularly VSI’sdecomposing culture, their use & methods of applicationin decomposition of sugarcane trash, PMC along withspent wash. These bio-inoculants along with organicmanures will be useful for increasing soil fertility andminimizing doses of inorganic fertilizers.
