about India’s beer
industry growth.
Mintel expects
India’s retail beer
market, worth
over 200 billion
rupees ($3 billion) last year, to more than double by
2017 to 430 billion rupees, with volume growing 36
percent. In India, beer accounts for just 5 percent of
alcohol consumed by volume, with annual per capita
beer consumption of only 1.7 liters compared with 74
liters in the United States. The industry is quite
confident that in next five years beer sales will be
more than double its current volume. Strong beer is
the fastest growing segment and experts expect it to
grow to 90 percent over the next three to five years.
Strong beer, with alcohol content of 5-8 percent,
accounted for 83 percent of all beer sold in India last
year. The emergence of microbreweries on the Indian
scene and settings up of specialized beer drinking
places like Pint Room and Beer Cafe are pushing the
beer sale and enabling beer drinkers have new
experiences. (Reference: “Spiritz” June 2014, Vol. 5,

harvesters (Rane 4000 – 170 HP, Rane 5000-200 HP,
Rane 7000 – 230 HP) and two models of whole cane
harvesters (Rane 7000 semi / auto – 170 HP). He
presented the comparative economics of mechanized
and manual harvesting and informed that the cost of
cane harvesting by harvester is in the range of Rs.
300 to 330 per ton and its harvesting capacity is 8 to
10 tonnes per hour. The maximum cost in mechanized
harvesting goes for diesel and repayment of the loan
for the machine. The cost of harvesting per tonne
can be reduced only by increasing the daily operating
hours and increased duration of crushing season.
The presentation on ‘Sugarcane settling planter’
was made by Mr. Vivek Bhoite, Subject Matter
Specialist, KVK, Baramati. The imported vegetable
transplanter was modified for sugarcane settling
planting. The machine is adjustable to 3. To 5.5 ft.
