    QUICK HITS »

» The Golden Eagles close out a four games in eight days stretch with a midweek matchup with Langston (Okla.) tonight in Bill George Arena.

» On Tuesday, John Brown rode 25 points from sophomore Luke Harper and a perfect 8-of-8 shooting mark from senior Quintin Bailey (16 points) proplled JBU to an 82-69 win and a season sweep of Central Christian (Kan.) in McPherson. The visitors shot 31-of-35 from the charity stripe and weathered 17 turnovers and a 5-of-18 mark from behind the arc.

» Junior Densier Carnes continues to anchor the John Brown defensive effort as he paces the Sooner Athletic in both rebounds per game (8.8) and double-doubles (10). JBU’s defensive effort of allowing just 66.8 points per game is top in the league and 11th overall in the nation.

» The Lions enter tonight’s contest after clubbing Bacone by a 103-36 margin last Saturday, and lead the conference with 11.9 offensive rebounds per game, largely fueling its 77.1 points per game average. That offense features four players scoring in double figures, led by Ryan Scales’ 13.9 points per game.

» With the win over Central Christian on Tuesday, the Golden Eagles crossed the “magical” 20-win threshold for the eighth time since the 2008-90 season. On the previous seven occasions, JBU made an appearance in Kansas City four times.

    42019-20 MEN’S BASKETBALL » JOHN BROWN

  • What a year we had in 2018-19 and we are ready to see what 2019-20 brings our way as we continue to work, serve and lead with our student-athletes.

We are so thankful for the accomplishments over the last year. It was a year of suc-cess on the court/field, in the classroom, in community service projects and in individual student-athlete’s lives. Our men’s basketball team, women’s soccer team and two cross country runners (sophomore Ben Martin and freshman Allika Pearson) represented us well at the NAIA National Championships, with women’s soccer finishing in the Round of 16. Our teams competed very well during conference play – finishing in the top half, and falling just short of a regular season and a tournament title in men’s basketball and in women’s soccer! Our men’s tennis team had a banner year and we had the privilege of hosting the SAC/RRAC regional tournament over in Broken Arrow, Okla., with the men and women both winning first-round matches.

The academic awards are at an all-time high. I could not be prouder of the performance in the classroom by our student-athletes, as well as the leadership the coaches are provid-ing in this area. The athletic department finished the school year with a 3.33 cumulative grade point average – the highest since we began tracking 16 years ago! Sixty-three (63) student-athletes were named to the SAC All-Academic Team, while 92 were named to the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll! All nine of our intercollegiate programs were honored with the NAIA’s Scholar-Team designation and four programs paced all other SAC insti-tutions with the top GPA’s – men’s basketball, volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country! We also had 28 students named NAIA Scholar Athletes – juniors and seniors with at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA!

I couldn’t ask for a more service-minded group. Our women’s basketball team continued work with the local non-profit Ability Tree, while women’s soccer traveled to Colcord (Okla.) Public Schools weekly to work with the Hornets of Character after-school program. Our men’s soccer team led the annual Siloam Springs Fútbol Club clinics in April – once again, spending time with close to 200 local kids. Our men’s basketball team volunteered at Northside Elementary once a week during the fall semester – giving time to those precious kindergartners, while also helping out a local widow with home projects. Our cheer team volunteered hours with the Boys and Girls Club, Ability Tree and participated in Serve Siloam. And we continued our collection of food for the Manna Center at the annual Toilet Paper Game and provided 2,000 rolls of toilet paper to them as well!

The mission of the Golden Eagle Booster Club is to give support to all of the JBU intercollegiate programs. We want our campus, local community, and all alumni to be proud of being a supporter of John Brown University Athletics.

My hope is that you will partner with us during the 2019-20 academic year and assist with our continuing needs.

    Sincerely,

    Robyn DaughertyDirector of Athletics

    QUICK HITS »

» The Golden Eagles welcome Langston to Bill George Arena tonight in a clash of programs that are vying for one of the last spots into the Sooner Athletic tournament.

» Langston currently holds the eighth and final spot in the postseason tournament, while John Brown is just 1.5 games behind and will look to even the series with the Lions in the important matchup.

» The Lions bring with them the nation’s third leading scorer and the top scorer in the Sooner Athletic in Asheika Alexander, who put up 24 points in LU’s 69-66 victory over the Golden Eagles back on Jan. 13. The junior forward averages 20.8 points per game and is coming off a pair of 33-point performances in the month of January.

» Junior Taylor Fergen continues to do it all for JBU. She not only leads the squad in rebounds (5.8) and assists (4.0) per game, she is second in scoring at 10.1 points per night. Fergen’s assist mark is fifth-best in the league.

» A bright spot behind the arc for the Golden Eagles has been sophomore Marta Matamala. She has posted a 41.6 percent clip behind the arc this season, averaging 2.2 triples per game. She is 42-of-101 through 22 contests and scores two-thirds of her total 187 points from long range.
