Introduction

Using virtual reality (VR) in education could be considered a natural development of

computer-based training (CBT) or computer-assisted instruction (CAI). The use of computers as

instructional aids has a long history and Virtual reality, which can be used on all types of computers,

has followed that trend.

Ensuring students are engaged, motivated and challenged throughout their school years is a

key priority for teachers. The VR can unlock potential, giving students new ways to experience learning

and even create their own media. It is hard to find technological tools to inspire a generation who

can’t imagine their life without smartphones. VR is a great example of technologies with untold

possibility in the years ahead. What better ways to inspire and engage your students?

Main objective of the module

This module provides information about the use of virtual reality in education and ways to

create your own resources.

5.1 How to create your VR resources

This chapter is about what and how you can use the minimum resources to do your best. This

can be targeted also with your students. Creating video resources engages your students in learning

much more than going through virtual reality experiences.

5.1.1 Shooting the educational visual material

VR and 360 video include a vast range of technology, from simple cameras like GO PRO FUSION

to stereoscopic, rotatable video on a web page or mobile device, from headsets such as Google

Cardboard to high – end headset-based VR experiences, which allow full movement and interaction.

VR experiences (based on 3D graphics or backend coding) have been available in research labs

and industrial applications for many years. Recent advances in headsets, displays and motions sensors

with increased rendering power mean that such experiences are becoming available in consumer-level

devices. 360 video can provide highly –realistic imagery, it is comparatively easy to produce but lacks

interactivity or the ability for the viewer to move freely. While on the other hand, VR has the ability

to provide rich movement and interactivity, but is often more expensive to produce, and it is

technically challenging to support photorealistic imagery – although commercial solutions are

becoming available, such as volumetric capture and early approach to light field rending.

For shooting the 360 video you need a 360 camera. The most frequently used cameras are

Samsung 360 Gear and the Fusion from Go Pro. We prefer GO PRO FUSION because Go Pro is a

complex system. It offers you all you need to make a professional video starting with a camera and

ending with the cloud space. It is waterproof.

This camera has two identical lenses that shoot individually. The images are then merged by

software and mapped onto a sphere.

Overcapture Lenses that shoot

individually

Images mapped on a sphere

You can film in motion or you can film the motion. It is different depending on the subject of

the film. If you want to film natural landscapes, historical monuments, or architectural buildings then

it is important to ensure the movement. Movies have to be dynamic, to capture and, more importantly,

to attract the viewer’s attention. In other words, when the subject is static, filming is important to be

on the move.

If what you want to film is dynamic, then you just put the camera in a safe position to over

capture. It will capture everything around it, it will record the moment in all directions from any single

location. This is what we refer to as Over Capture. Over Capture is a procedure that involves shooting

an entire scene with a 360-degree camera and then cropping the video for use in a more traditional,

fixed-frame video. It is a powerful, distinctive tool that allows editors to change spherical media

they’ve captured with Fusion into non-spherical, traditional content — all from within the GoPro app.

5.1.2 Technical editing to obtain the VR material

There are many different options for editing 360 videos, but most of them are for professional

video makers.

GoPro’s own app (GoPro App) gives one an opportunity to edit videos on their own

smartphone.

Fusion is able to push the limits of possibility on a mobile device with state-of-the-art stitching

algorithms, amazing 3K/60 and 5.2K/30 spherical video resolutions, and GoPro’s industry-leading

image quality. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to use the newest mobile hardware available to

you in order to get the best experience.

IOS and Android devices meet the hardware requirements for compatibility with Fusion in

mobile devices. Please keep in mind that, particularly on Android, other factors present on the device

(such as GPU libraries or region and carrier-specific SOCs) can affect the performance, even when

minimum hardware requirements are satisfied:

Usability

Neither iOS nor Android media gallery applications (iOS Photos, etc) natively support the 360 media

created by Fusion. Therefore, we cannot save content directly to those applications. Due to this,

content is saved in the Local Media section of the GoPro App, and as a result, deleting the GoPro App

will also remove this content from your device.

When viewing videos from your GoPro camera (on SD card), you are viewing an LRV file (low resolution

video). However, media saved to Local Media in the GoPro App is viewed in a full resolution video,

with photos being shown at full resolution whether they are being viewed in the Camera or Local

Media section of the GoPro App.

Sharing

Limitations

Sharing 360 videos demands a lot from your mobile device, as it is a resource-intensive activity. As

such, there are limitations to the

duration of clips that are shareable

via theGoProapp. Current limitations

are:

Youtube: 90 second clips or less

Facebook: 30 second clips or

lessandphotos

360 video offers video editors and filmmakers a new way to tell their story. Due to the

differences there are between this new medium and the traditional 2D media, different tools are

needed for content creators to edit 360 videos. You could be familiar with regular video editing, but be

at a loss for 360 editing, whether it’s on your phone or your desktop. A list of mobile 360 video editors

Adobe Premier Pro

During IBC 2017, Adobe showcased new 360/VR editing tools for Premiere Pro and AfterEffects, centered around the acquisition of theSkybox Studio plugins from Mettle and their inclusion inside Premiere Pro CC andAfterEffects CC. Here’s a video tutorial on howtoworkwith Adobe Premiere Pro on VR videos and a second tutorial on howtoedit 360/VR videos with the software. One can also refer themselves to Adobe’s full “Support for VR Workflows” page for further specifics to user guidelines.

Adobe After Effects

Final Cut Pro X

The latest Final Cut Pro X release includes new features such as 360-degree VR video editing, advanced color grading tools and support for HighDynamic Range (HDR) video. iMac Pro users are also able to use Final Cut Pro X to edit full-resolution 8K videos.

Magix Movie Edit Pro

Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus 2018 is able to stitch 360 videos in real time, which was introduced as a feature in Magix Video Pro X.

5.1.3 Insertions and VR features

360 video offers filmmakers and video editors alike a boundless and immersive way to tell

stories. But, there’s a learning curve. To anyone who has ever worked with or even watched a 360

video, it’s obvious that there’s a big difference between editing standard video vs 360.

9

Future schools using the power of Virtual and Augmented Reality for education and training in the classroom

2018-1-RO01-KA201-049411

Phase 1: Stitching

It’s typical to shoot 360 with a number of different frames or cameras. If the video is shot this

way, the footage all needs to be stitched together before the editing process starts. Autopano Video

from Kolor, a subsidiary of the GoPro family.

In many ways, Autopano is your 360 post-production one-stop shop. It makes a quick job of

stitching footage together from various different cameras. Autopano also allows you to stabilize your

video, and correct the 360 rotation inside Premiere Pro (via Autopano’s integration).

Phase 2: Formatting 360 video

There are a few different types of 360 video formats, but equirectangular is the most popular, universal, and user-friendly format out there.

Equirectangular essentially turns 360 video into a rectangular format — reminiscent of HD or

4K footage. This file format even allows your aspect ratio to vary frame to frame, giving you a nice

amount of flexibility when shooting. You can also watch unrendered equirectangular footage on any

standard video player. But, if you want the whole 360 or headset experience, you need to watch it in

a player or app that supports 360 — like Vimeo.

Phase 3: Editing

As you’ll see in video tutorial above, editing 360 video is actually pretty similar to editing standard

video. All of the same concepts like syncing, cutting, dissolves and levels still apply to 360 video, you

just have to get the hang of it.

10

Future schools using the power of Virtual and Augmented Reality for education and training in the classroom

2018-1-RO01-KA201-049411

If you’re looking for editing software to get the job done, use Adobe Premiere Pro.

Adobe’s integration with Vimeo, After Effects, and the rest of the Creative Cloud all make it a fantastic

tool for 360 video editors. It’s important to know that if you want to add in visual elements (like

graphics) you’ll want to use a third-party app (like After Effects paired with Skybox Studio) to make

sure your graphics aren’t distorted in playback.

Phase 4: Previewing

Previewing 360 video from Priemere Pro is also incredibly easy. Simply drop your

equirectangular video into your timeline, select the Toggle VR Video Display button found in the

menu in both the Preview or Program monitor.

Once selected, you’ll be able to tilt the camera 360 degrees with either your mouse or side

dials on your Preview or Program monitor. The example above uses a monoscopic 360 video format,

but Vimeo supports stereoscopic 360 video formats. To use a stereoscopic source format, you can

stack your video files with the left eye footage on top of the right.

Phase 5: Exporting

11

Future schools using the power of Virtual and Augmented Reality for education and training in the classroom

2018-1-RO01-KA201-049411

Exporting your 360 video is a little different than what you’d do with standard video. Namely,

you need to add the appropriate metadata. To do this, simply go to File > Export > Media or

hit command+M on your keyboard. This will pull up the export panel.

Adjust your video settings. We recommend using a less compressed format (like ProRes) since

360 accentuates compression artifacts. Use 4K if possible (the higher the better for video quality —

Vimeo supports HDR uploads).

With 360, you can only see a portion of the raw video. So even if the raw file is 4K, the portion

within your view might be closer to 1080.

And, once you’ve got what you want, you’re all set to upload.

The images for this lesson were shot on a Theta S, which comes with proprietary software that stitches

360 clips together in real-time. Feature image from “Tales from the Edge” by Jeb Corliss.

5.3 Examples of VR Educational Resources/Tools for science school subjects

Virtual reality (VR) has so much potential as a tool that can take learning beyond the

conventional classroom. The future of VR in the education sector isn’t bleak at all. About 53% of the

survey respondents did reveal that they planned to use VR in the future, and 68% acknowledged this

technology’s power to excite students to learn.

The creative use of VR technology as a storytelling tool is also expected to further engage

young learners.

5.4 How to setup and use Virtual Reality with Android phones

5.4.1. Setting up your smartphone for VR

Try to make sure you’re using one of the newer models of phones on the market today. If you

don’t, set your phone on not disturb. Make sure your phone and screen size is compatible with your

choice of headset. Set your phone to do not disturb.

5.4.2. Setting up your mobile VR headset

To begin with, make sure you have a working mobile virtual reality headset. The setup may be

slightly different depending on your VR headset. The attachment of your phone may be a Slide, Clip,

Clasp or direct connection. The Samsung Gear VR requires you to plug the phone in, whereas the

Homido V2 will clip your phone directly in. Adjust the Headset so that you feel comfort. When properly

adjusted, what you see on screen should appear clearer and less blurry than before. To properly test

this you will need to launch VR content first.

5.4.3. Downloading and viewing VR content

If you’re using any headset (other than the Gear VR), then you should download the app as

follows:

The Google Cardboard App: As your first “go to app” Google have integrated features that

will direct you to the VR world. This app has a variety of demos built-in including VR Demo.

Youtube Chances are you already have Youtube installed on your android phone. If not,

download it.

If using a Gear VR, follow the screen instructions to browse the Oculus store. When you plug

your phone into the Gear VR, Oculus Home will automatically boot up and the store and

library will be navigable within VR.

TIPS you’ll need to remember when setting up VR on android phones.

Keep in mind that mobile VR will not provide the same experience as a tethered PC headset.

Watch your battery life as using your screen with VR for extended periods of time will suck

the life out of your battery and can overheat your phone.

Don’t use it for extended periods of time.

5.5 How to use VR glasses on your smartphone

VR glasses are head-mounted devices you can use to view VR (Virtual Reality) apps on your

smartphone. To use VR glasses, you need a smartphone with gyroscopic sensors, and a 4 inches wide

screen with a resolution of 720p at a minimum (a larger screen size with 1080p or greater is

recommended).
