Voyage: SPRING 2017 Discipline: Management Course Number and Title: MGT 360 Social & Sustainable Venturing

Division: Upper Faculty Name: Claudia G. Green, Ph.D. RD

Semester Credit Hours: 3 Prerequisites: Junior standing or higher

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The notion of social entrepreneurship is undergoing a significant change in the last

few years. Combining the passion of a social mission with the techniques of the

discipline of business, innovation, creativity and rugged determination most

associate with for profit enterprises the discipline is coming into its own. The social

entrepreneur applies practical solutions to social problems. The result may be a new

product, new service, or new approach to a social problem. It is critical that the

solutions be sustainable- economically, environmentally, as well as socio-culturally.

Entrepreneurial skill and energy can be brought to bear on social problems and

unmet needs, transforming them into authentic opportunities to create social value.

We parallel our study of social entrepreneurship with the countries that we visit on

the voyage. You will learn about social entrepreneurs in each of these countries. In

teams, you will propose an idea for a sustainable, social venture and follow through

with concept development, presentation and written plan.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

You will be asked to come prepared to each class having completed the

assignments for that day and to be ready to engage in a discussion about each

topic.

One of the most effective ways for you to experience entrepreneurship is to experience it through a hands-on approach. In this course you are expected to interact with members of the ship community and take advantage of opportunities

to learn from the people you will meet in each of the ports about social issues and challenges they fact. Of course, SAS faculty and other resources will be available

on board to help you complete your business plan. You will also be expected to work effectively in teams and be active in classroom participations.

Strong written and oral skills are required to successfully navigate this class.

Individuals who can persuasively express their ideas will have a distinct advantage

over those who do not. Accordingly, assignments in this class will require attention

to both.

Midterm Exam: given half way through class, the exam will emphasize material covered in the first half of the semester.

Class Participation/teamwork/attendance: You must participate and interact in class discussions and debriefings to show your knowledge of the material. In evaluating the quality of participation in class discussions and assigned cases, I will

consider your preparedness, logical reasoning, and the ability to apply general concepts to the specific situations under discussion. It goes without saying that you

must be present to participate, so attendance is expected.

Final Exam: The final will cover material discussed in class since the midterm.

Social Venture Business Plan Assignment

1. Social venture plan idea: Within the first two (2) weeks of the term you will organize a team that will identify and present your idea for a social business

venture to the class.

2. Concept Presentation: After Chapter 3, you will make this presentation of your idea.

3. Written plan & presentation: The plan is a carefully prepared, cohesive

document that contains a comprehensive analysis of the social venture that reflects the considerations of all stakeholders as well as the viewpoints of the funding sources and the entrepreneur.

The plan should provide a framework for the systematic and comprehensive

evaluation of the social venture concept that will enable the founder/manager to take an objective and critical view of the entire organization.

The plan should help the founder/manager deal with uncertainties, evaluate

risks, and prepare contingencies enabling them to anticipate events, rather than react to them. There must also be a compelling view towards justifying the social

value to the endeavor.

The final plan will be presented to the class for assessment and voting. The Final Written Plan will be posted to our class website.
