Stainton Valour was one from the first crop of

Anglezarke Uno who has since become a

renowned sire of carcass trait sheep in the

Texel breed.

Valour was bought privately by that great

judge of Texel sheep, the late John McKerrow.

Valour had eye muscle depth of 42.9mm,

the highest I have ever heard of and was an ET

brother to two other famous sires,

Stainton Vigilante bought by John’s brother for

his Nochnary flock and Stainton Vantage II

(pictured), bought for the top price at

Worcester in 2014.

Alabama is unique in the Texel

world in being fashionable in

showing circles combined with

tremendous performance figures.

He himself sold for 40,000gns as a

lamb and has sired lambs up to

100,000gns as well as many other

sale toppers this year and last. He

has been widely used through AI

and his progeny have shot him up

the ranking as a sire of Performance

Recorded lambs and he is now the

number 5 UK sire with an index of

356. Like Stainton Valour, Alabama

is a top ten sire for muscle depth.

I bought some Alabama semen when he shot up the rankings and then realised that I would have

nothing unrelated to use on my thirteen retained breeding ewes. It was obvious to me that the best

Alabama son for measurements was

PRE1901241 so I paid a visit to his

breeder Bob Pierce where I was pleased

to find a well balanced, tight skinned

lamb, with a nice refined head and quite

fine in the bone and did the deal. I

would not have left without him!

Whisky Mac was for a time the

number one PR lamb of 2015,

grew into a huge yearling

weighing 160kgs and sold to the

Drumcross flock near Glasgow.

He was used by me as a lamb

and produced some of the

best looking ewes in the flock.

He is a maternal brother to

three other sires used in

pedigree flocks: Vorn War’orse,

Vorn Waterloo and Vorn

Vladimir.

He and his twin sister, VJV1700928, Lot 6,

will form the backbone of the retained flock.

Craig Farm Wizard was the sire of a ram sold

by Ken Hodge for £5,600 at Kelso this year.

length of 29.42. There are only two other sires with EBVs above 20, his sire Anxiety 5th at

22.88 and his half brother Vorn Broadside at 23.94. Last autumn following tupping Banxy was

found on the ground unable to stand and was diagnosed with Vitamin B complex deficiency. I

have seen this on four other occasions and he is the only one that survived. He was just

starting to look well again this autumn and Garry Critchlow soon spotted him in the bunch of

yearlings and by the time of the sale he will be in service in Derbyshire.

Yardstick was the number one UK PR lamb of

2016 and a half share was sold to John Elliot

of Roxburgh Mains for 5,000gns. I retained

overseas semen rights and gave forty doses

of semen to two of the top PR flocks in New

Zealand which resulted in him becoming the

number one Texel and number two all

breeds sire for growth there. Two yearlings

from the Blackdale stud were the two

highest priced Texel rams sold in NZ last

year at $8,000 and $6,400. Needless to say

all of his semen in New Zealand has now

been sold.

Abell was born the day of my brother in

law, Edward Abell’s, funeral. He combined

the growth of Yardstick with the

muscularity of Stainton Valour. Following

use as a lamb in the flock he was sold for

£5,000 to Heinz Pluess in Switzerland.
