Every event, both big and small, needs volunteers to either help run it, completely run it or contribute to it in some way or another. On this past Sunday, Jocelyn Recreation honored a few of these generous people with their annual Volunteer Of The Year awards before a largely packed crowd at the Jocelyn Hall. an entire year straight at the Mountainview Centen-nial Grounds. From winter planning to spring and summer construction, to organizing official, and just for fun, tournaments at the new disc golf course, Mike (not picture) & Jeri Bohms as well as Ian & Cori Murdock have put in countless hours to make sure the Mountainview Disc Gold Course is a success. All avid disc golfers, Cori mentions it being “nice to be recognized for playing”. While their personal love of disc golf may be what drew the 4 of them to create the course, it’s now being enjoyed by residents and visitors alike and while just recently hosted their first sanc-tioned tournament before the end of the first season.

In addition to designing the course and the actual labour constructing it, for which Ian and his many “toys” were mentioned in aiding the construction, they’ve also designed a website, put up wonderful signage and host various events on the course. When jokingly asked what they are going to build next year, Cori mentions a 5 year plan with future improvements to the course, and adding some more beginner style holes for those unfamiliar with the game and intimi-dated by the sometimes steep conditions.

While none of the volunteers devote countless hours of their time just be thanked, Jocelyn Recreation does a great job recognizing those who lend a helping hand.

Creature FeatureEastern Red-Backed Salamander

You may not realize it but there are a lot of these guys around. With a population density that can exceed 2500 per hectare in Ontario, the Eastern Red-Backed Salamander is quite common if rarely seen. While the season for them should be just about done Patrick McCormick saw this little guy over the Thanksgiving weekend a few weeks back, so on a warm sunny day it’s still possible to see them.

Next time you are hiking in the woods, or even around your property, if you’re near the water and have lots of trees look under some logs and you may just find several. While you’re not likely to see them while it’s cold, if it warms up it could be possible.

If you are going to handle them (for instance if you see one in the road and need to move it), be sure to have clean and preferably wet hands, as any sun-screen or insect repellent will seep through their permeable skin. If you’ve been seeing one in the same spot over several years, it’s likely the same specimen as they have very small territories which they defend from other salamanders.

They hibernate in winter underground or in small mammal dens. With a max size of just 10 cm and a relatively secretive life these guys can certainly be easy to miss, but if you know where to look they also aren’t difficult to find.

The Black Bear Cafe is expanding our offering with some new faces to our

team and new foods for you.

We are pleased to announce our collaboration with Erica Hogan, to expand our specialty cake and pastry offering.

Erica has extensive experience and credentials in cake decorating and design, as well as training as a pastry chef. (Please see Erica’s bio below).

With the addition of Judith See to our team, a well experienced server, grill cook and kitchen supervisor, we have added a few new items to our menu over the last couple of weeks. New to our regular menu is a 100% all beef burger on our homemade bun, homemade freshly breaded all white-meat chicken strips, and a European hotdog in our Roman style pizza dough wrap with pepperoni and mozza.

In response to customer requests we are offering a dinner style special each day for a heartier lunch or dinner, such as butter chicken, pork tenderloin and mashed potatoes, or ham and scallop potatoes to name a few.

Drop by to say hello, and enjoy one or two of our signature sticky buns, butter tarts, lemon squares, pumpkin cake, date filled oat cookies, or one of our many chocolate bars or brownies. All pastries are made in house, fresh, from scratch, thanks to our baking team, Josie, Shelene, Janey, Judith and Mary Lou.

Erica Hogan is the proud co-owner of Hogan’s Homestead based on St. Joseph Island and has been baking since the age of 16. With an extensive background in the culinary industry – Erica is a Pastry Chef, Certified Cake Designer and a dessert connoisseur. Throughout her 15+ years in the industry Erica has created a name for herself with multiple awards for excellence in the field, including: Skills Canada Competition winner three years in a row, and is a certified Wilton Method Cake Designer instructor.

Erica has consulted with multiple bakeries during their start upprocess throughout Ontario. She has created one of a kind cakes and desserts for family events including weddings and birthdays, corporate events, and Canadian Olympic Athletes.

Erica is thrilled to be collaborating with The Black Bear Café on St. Joseph Island as they expand their Custom Cake and specialty dessert product line just in time for Christmas and the holiday season. SIDEWALK PLOW OPERATOR

The Township of St. Joseph is accepting applications for the part time seasonal position of sidewalk plow operator in Richards Landing.

Applicants must have a valid Ontario driver’s license, be self directed and be available on short notice. Hours are dependent on weather conditions. In addition to clearing sidewalks, the Operator is also responsible for sanding, salting and shoveling snow.
