    VOLUNTEERS AWARENESS AND MOTIVATION AMONG UNDERGRADUATE IN

    JAPAN

    Volunteering activities among young adults are crucial and has the potential in helping thesociety to function well. The purpose of this study is to identify the motivational reasons of 

    volunteerism and the satisfaction level among university students in Japan. A total of 

    313 respondents (54 female! 4" male# 1$%&& years of age were o'tained from an onlinesurvey. Volunteer unction )nventory (V)# (*lary + ,nyder! 1--$# which consists of values!

    understanding! enhancement! career! social and protective functions were used to measure the

    appeals from volunteering activities and the motives and goals of the volunteer. There was asignificant correlation 'etween all of the si functions with continuing in volunteering. /esults

    from the analysis of variance (A0VA# revealed that the primary references! friends

    ((&!31."-! p .1# are significant in influencing students to do volunteer wor while

     parents ((&! 31 2 1.45! ns# and si'lings ((3! 31 2 1.51! ns# are less significant. 6ultipleregression analysis was used to analyse the relative strength of the antecedent varia'les and

    independent varia'les in predicting the continuation of volunteering act among undergraduates in

    Japan. The result shows functions of values (7 2 .18! p .1#! understanding (7 2 .4&! p .1# and satisfaction (7 2 .1-! p .1# correlates significantly with the continuation of 

    volunteering act. verall! respondents were satisfied with their eperiences! especially in regard

    to their previous eperience in volunteering activity and were found to 'e am'itious to continuedoing volunteering wor in the future. The findings provide strong support of the original

    research which is applica'le to Japanese as well. urther research is necessary to

    investigate other independent varia'les such as religion and cultural values can also 'e includedto further understand the spiritual effect on volunteerism.
