Front Desk Volunteers!
Are you a supporter of Rocky Mountain PBS? Looking to spend some quality time with an
organization that is deeply involved in its community? Support us by volunteering at the front
desk!
As the Rocky Mountain PBS receptionist, you will be the first line of contact for our viewers,
community members and business professionals who enter into the building or call our station
directly. You will also receive calls for our radio station, KUVO 89.3!
Answering the phone and directing calls to the correct employee in the building is essential to
navigate the flow of call traffic. Greeting our guests and notifying the employee they are
meeting with is part of the duties as well. Behind the desk, you may also be given specific tasks
from our employees, such as mailing duties.
We are looking to have volunteers cover the front desk when our current receptionist will not be
able to. These shifts can range from half days to full days, and you will be properly trained. If
interested, please contact [email protected].

Display Your Imaginative Side
The Station’s Archived Memories (SAM Display
Committee is looking for several imaginative and
friendly volunteers. Volunteers that enjoy
participating in Rocky Mountain PBS special
events will find this to be the perfect volunteer
activity with an opportunity to attend events
while also showing off the station’s history.
Volunteers are asked to create colorful, interesting and appealing displays from the thousands of
available historical photographs, documents and memorabilia items from the archives.
SAM provides all materials to display, and you would work with a seasoned volunteer until
comfortable working alone. Training is provided for all volunteers at their convenience. The
average time spent per event is approximately two hours ahead of the occasion selecting the
perfect display items from the archives. An additional hour is needed to set up and take down
each display on the day of the event. The really fun part begins when supervising the display
and conversing with guests. Events are most often held at Rocky Mountain PBS (Denver) but are
periodically held outside of the station. Individuals that are available during business hours or
evenings can enjoy this volunteer position.
Does this volunteer activity sound like something you’d like to do? Please contact the SAM
Office at Rocky Mountain PBS (Denver) 303-620-5734 or email [email protected] for additional
information.

Want to Impact Kids? Join the Volunteer Ranks for our Super School
News program Join the volunteers for Super School News (www.rmpbs.org/ssn) and make a difference in a
child’s life. This education-based program is the oldest, continuously running production of
Rocky Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th
graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This
program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the Super
School News alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast.
Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching
sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition,
volunteers will assist with assembling information (1 morning in August and December),
orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the
Denver station.
We hope you will help sustain this legacy program. If you are interested in volunteering, please
email [email protected] or Susan [email protected].

Tour Guides Have the Most Fun!
Do you have a few hours a month? (Most tours are scheduled during the day but there are
some occasional evenings too!) Join the fun of taking small groups around the Denver station
and informing folks of all ages about the wonders of Rocky Mountain PBS. It’s easy – we have
tour scripts and we train you. Generally, our tours last approximately an hour. You don’t have to
be an expert. Just bring your smile and laughter with you. Tour guides are some of the best
goodwill ambassadors that we have.
Rocky Mountain PBS is committed to our public and that means that we welcome the public
into our station more than any other TV station in town. We need your help. If this sounds like
something you would enjoy, please contact Susan [email protected] and we will
have some fun!

Congressional Update—Public Broadcasting Funding
Michael Riksen, Vice President-Policy & Representation, NPR
Good news to share on the beginning of the congressional appropriations process. On June 6th,
the Senate subcommittee responsible for public broadcasting funding approved $445 million for
the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for FY 2019 as part of funding the federal government
for FY 2017. Additionally, the subcommittee approved $50 million for interconnection assistance
during FY 2017. This is the first step in the annual appropriations process.

A STAUNCH SUPPORTER OF PUBLIC TELEVISION: Former President
Gerald R. Ford
by Laura Sampson, Founder of Station’s Archived Memories
To formally announce KRMA’s 1992 Capital Campaign, Don Johnson
-- former KRMA General Manager -- arranged forPresident Gerald
R. Ford to be the keynote speaker at a private reception at the
Stouffer Concourse Hotel, 3801 Quebec Street in Denver, on July 22,
1992. President Ford was proudly known as a staunch supporter of
public broadcasting.
Over 200 local community leaders joined President Ford (1974-
1977), Don Johnson (KRMA General Manager), Fred Deering (Capital
Campaign chair) and the Capital Campaign Steering Committee. The
reception was covered by both local and national press.
The 1992 capital campaign provided funds to pay for acquisition,
expansion and renovation of the Rocky Mountain PBS studios at
1089 Bannock in Denver. In addition, the campaign funds were used for the expansion,
equipment and improvement of KRMA’s production and transmission throughout Colorado and
the West.
During his remarks on July 22, President Ford said, “Over the years I’ve had a few opportunities
to try to raise this kind of money, so I understand and appreciate how important it is to get not
only viewer support, but corporate, foundation and other support. I think it is a good investment
for Denver which is a growing city, and for the state of Colorado which is equally successful and
growing. It’s important for you to have a public television facility such as Channel Six in this
community and this state.”
Following his comments, President Ford took the time to shake the hand of every guest. The
momentous occasion left lasting memories for all that attended.
Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) wants to take this moment during our 60th Anniversary to
recognize the important role played by former President Gerald R. Ford in the continued success
of Rocky Mountain PBS.

driven award winning project of Rocky Mountain PBS since 2000. To contribute or volunteer for

Volunteer Appreciation - Thank You for Your
Support!
Thanks to Volunteers from KTSC (Southern Colorado) Thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers who came out to our Kids Fun Fest event on Saturday,
June 4th to support us, including Kay Davis, Cathy Reilly, Jon Horton, the Lagana family,
Kandy Drake and her group of Colorado Springs Utilities volunteers, and the Friends of the
Uncle Wilber Fountain.

Thanks to Volunteers from KRMA (Denver/Front Range) Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) Adds 3 New Volunteers
From Piper Jones, Intern, Station’s Archived Memories
Welcome to Rocky Mountain PBS Ellie, Griffin and Cali! Thank you for assisting the Station’s
Archive Memories project!
Cali Neuberger will be working in SAM to
integrate best practices into databasing. She is
originally from Omaha, Nebraska and just
finished her first year in the Master of Library
and Information Science program at the
University of Denver where she is focusing my
studies on archives. When she is not studying
she likes to read, play with her cats Tink and Meatball, and explore Colorado. She is excited to
be volunteering at the Rocky Mountain PBS!
Ellie Schmidt recently relocated to Denver from
Saint Paul, MN. She enjoys hiking, swimming,
and attempting yoga poses that are way beyond
her skill level (someday she will master the
handstand). She's thrilled to have the
opportunity to mesh her love of film with history
as a SAM volunteer.
Griffin Woolsey will be working with SAM to
offer man power to the production archival
efforts, burning legacy content to DVD and
preparing for the future of digital archiving.
He is a Colorado native who loves being outside,
producing and performing, and putting smiles on
people's faces. In his own words, “I don't want to
be an artist for the money, I want to be an artist that makes you think and more importantly,
makes you want to do better for the world."

Thank You “Get Outdoors” Volunteers
On Saturday June 11th, Rocky Mountain PBS
participated in National Park Service’s National
Get Outdoors Day! The event was held at Sloan’s
Lake in Denver and attracted over 4,500 people!
The annual event is held to encourage families to
engage in healthy, active outdoor fun.
The
free event featured fishing, rock wall climbing,
dancing, biking, paddling, live music and
much more. Rocky Mountain PBS had a
booth present at the event with a “Sprout
a Bean Seed!” activity for the kids. In
addition, we brought along Nature Cat to
entertain the crowd!
A very special THANK YOU goes out to the
volunteers who participated that day, playing a
big role in running the RMPBS booth and
guiding Nature Cat along the event. Thank
you Betty Flaten, Annette Barnett, Kira Broer,
Janet Weisheit, Kathleen Holmes and Sharon
Oh-Willeke! We couldn’t have done it without
you!
