About the grant The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship (WISE)

program supports the Australian Government’s commitment to increase awareness and participation

of girls and women in STEM and entrepreneurship education and careers, including in schools

through to university and to the research sector. Results of the grant will be announced in early 2018.

FEDD’s grant application Our objective is to increase participation of women in teach STEM activities, by showing them how to teach the principals of

mechatronics, electronics and computer science to their classes with confidence. The target for this grant is years 7-9 female

teachers who wish to improve their knowledge and skills teaching STEM.

The scope of the grant is 100 Western Australian teachers. If the program proves successful, and subject to obtaining further grant

funding, it will be rolled out to the other states and territories.

We will train and support the teachers in how to program robots for the Sumo Challenge so that they can train their students.

Teachers will be provided with three robots, lesson plans, worked coding examples, curriculum mapping, a simulator and

tutorials.

What are Sumo Robots Two robots compete in a head-to-head match following the basic system of traditional human sumo matches. Robots are

allowed no weapons, and are not allowed to flip each other. The sole purpose is a pushing match between the two robots to force

the other from the arena. To see Sumo Robots in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIYMAymGzdI
