Most program registrations are done through our website, waterburyrec.com. Here you can create an account, view our programs and pay our account balance online. Some programs may require additional information or forms to fill out.

Register for programs early! Nothing cancels a program faster than low or last minute enrollment. Registration for summer programming opens on Town Meeting Day (March 5th) at 8am.

Payments & Refunds Payment is due when registering for a program or renting a facility, unless otherwise noted. Payments can be made via online or by check or cash at the Town Offices (ATTN: Recreation 28 N. Main St. Waterbury, Vt 05676). The Town of Waterbury does not issue refunds unless a program is canceled or a rental becomes un-available.

Hiking and Fishing Camp

Love fishing? Love hiking? Never tried it but want to learn how? This camp is perfect for middle school-aged children who love/want to try hiking, fishing or just exploring the outdoors! Each day the camp will travel to a different location to fish and go on a hike, all while learning about our beautiful environment and the plants and animals that live in it. Some of the day trips include the Waterbury Reservoir, Stowe Pinnacal, Smugglers Notch, Lake Champlain, and more! Transportation will be provided by the Recreation Department for this camp and all trip and activity fee’s are included.

Overnight Camping Outings

We are offering two overnight camping trips for kids ages 5-12 this summer! This is a perfect intro to kids who have never camped before but want to experience and learn more about it, or for the kids who love camping! These trips will be located at Litter River State Park in Waterbury and is run by our Recreation Director and vet-eran rec staff. Each gender will have gender-specific staff with them and a lean-to (shelter with an open front) so tents are not needed- just bring a sleeping bag and a change of clothes! We’ll provide s’mores, hot dogs & popcorn for the night and breakfast in the morning! Come join us for campfire stories, an informational session from a park ranger about camping safety, and more! Pre-registration is required. Max registration per gender is 6. Drop-off at Little River State Park is 6:00pm and pick-up is 10:00am.

Look at our prepared slides using our microscopes. Learn about the different types of rocks and minerals from our interesting rock and mineral collection. Be a chemical detective. Make glob from glue. Use paper chromatography to separate colors. Make dirty pen-nies turn clean and clean pennies turn green. Everything will be explained to you so you can go home having learned some interesting science. Hands-on science is the best way to learn. Do it the Sciensational way!

Build and take home your own 7 in 1 Mars Mini Lander. Build a Space Rover, Space Explorer, Space Shuttle, Space Dog, Astronaut, Space Station, and Space Mechanic. Each powered by either solar energy or batteries. On our way to Mars on Mars and back from Mars, you will experiment in many different ways and more. All STEAMbased activities the sciensational way!! You will learn about solar energy. You will be seeing a 3D Mars surface using 3D glasses as well as making your own 3D drawing. Make a color changing UV bracelet and take it home!! Sample our delicious astronaut ice cream!! Learn about constellations. Build and take home your own mini paper rocket and launch it indoors or outdoors. On the last day, you will return to earth after being on Mars all week. You will have learned so many interesting things!

The Incredible Wall-Hugging Mouse Robot!

Wow! Join Sciensational Workshops and build your own wall hugging mouse robot which you can take home!! When the bump sensor makes contact with the wall, a switch motor directs power to the left motor. This simple behavior allows this incredible mouse to follow any vertical surface on the left. You will see all of this amazing action after building your own! Your mouse can be decorated with eyes, ears, and whisker stickers- or create and draw your own! Learning through the inquiry method and STEAM based principles, you will also build other robots working in smaller groups. Build a sumo wrestler, have tug of war events, and make the robots perform creative things for your group. Robots in this portion of the workshop are not taken home.

Karate-Kid Camps

These karate camps are packed with fun physical activity! Kids will learn beginner karate skills including proper striking, blocking and kicking techniques and apply those skills to basic self- -defense. Kicking pads, hand mitt targets, bosu balance and stability balls will help kids challenge their speed, balance, strength and agility. Fun partner drills, games and an obstacle course will keep us moving both in and outdoors. Lastly, kids will be in-troduced to the wooden bo staff and will practice some of the basic movements to learn a fun and simple form (pattern of movements). No martial arts experience is required. American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Levels:Aqua Tots: This parent and child level is designed to familiarize children aged 6 months to 3 years with water and teach swimming readiness, as well as familiarize parents with basic water safety. PreK: This level is designed to familiarize children aged 4-5 with the aquatic environment, build positive attitudes and safe practices around water, and help them squire rudimentary aquatic skills. Level 1: This level will help orient participants to the aquatic environ-ment and build positive attitudes and safe practices around the water while helping them develop basic aquatic skills. Level 2: This level builds on the basic water safety and skills taught in level 1, encouraging and practicing independence in the water. Level 3: This level continues to build on skills taught previously and helps participants achieve basic water competency. Level 4: This level focuses on improving stroke proficiency and endur-ance. Level 5: This level focuses on refinement for all six swimming strokes. Level 6: This level focuses on refinement and efficiency for all six swimming strokes, as well as building endurance over longer distanc-es and introduction to personal water safety rescue techniques and fundamentals of diving.
