Dr. Rita Kalra welcomed the chief guest Ms. Dona Suri on the Global Parents Day. She also welcomed all Rotarians and Anns who braved the stormy weather to attend the meeting, and all of them enjoyed the chai pakora fellowship. June being Rotary fellowship month, the President also talked about Rotary fellowship which builds goodwill and friendship amongst Rotarians all over the world. PP Rtn. Pallav Mukherjee formally introduced the chief guest. Ms. Dona Suri Ms. Dona Suri is a senior Journalist having extensive experience of 35 years in leading newspapers and magazines, handling all types of assignments. She was Feature Editor in Hindustan Times. She has professional experience in editorial departments in India Today, The Tribune, Indian Express etc. She was Member of Press Accreditation Committee. She comes from Mississippi in USA and studied at University of Missouri , School of Journalism in USA, which is the world’s first school of journalism, founded in 1908. She settled down in Chandigarh after she married Professor Suri of Panjab University. She is a swimmer and good at rowing. She has a taste for Hindustani classical music and likes to play Sarangi. Speaking on the Changing Family Values, Ms. Dona Suri talked about good and bad family. She referred to a high profile incident which occurred some years ago. A person taking a walk with his wife in the park was shot dead by an unidentified person who after vigorous investigation was identified as the lover of the wife! These two persons had planned the murder. It was reported that the wife was from a good family. Then Dona talked about her poor maid servant who works very hard to bring up her three children. With the money she earns she gives food to her children and sends them to school. Dona explained that it is not the money or property, a rich father or a rich grandfather which makes a good family. Even the maid has a good family. People from poorer background also have good family values. There is not much rebellion from the Indian child. Even the parents do not display any brutality towards their children. Family bonds in India are very strong. In India a family is the first line of defence for children. It plays an important role in providing stability and support at times of crisis. The Indian family have emotional bonding, leading to strong family values. In a lively discussion between the chief guest and Rotarians on happiness index it was quite clear that money is not the criteria to measure happiness or good family values. There may be some differences which may weaken the family values. But the Indian family is considered to be strong, stable and enduring, to overcome the differences. PDG Shaju Peter said in 2012 United Nations decided to have 1 st June as the Parents Day because the family structure in the west had serious problems in terms of children’s attitude towards parents, leading to family conflicts. Indian family structure was considered as one of the most desirable system. Shaju complimented Ms. Suri for her amazing knowledge about the Indian ethos, and thanked her for an inspiring talk. Happy Schools at GHS Jalauli

On 30/05/2018, our Club inaugurated facilities provided at Govt High School, Jalauli, Panchkula. Mrs. Upinder Kaur Walia, Mayor of Panchkula was the Chief Guest. School Headmistress Mrs. Sushma Sharma welcomed the Rotarians and applauded Rotary for its service to community. Our club has provided this school with water cooler, water filter and hand wash station.

Dental camp and poster making competition on 27.06.2018

Oral health exhibition for awareness about dental health, dental checkup camp and a poster making competition was organised for residents of Khuda Ali Sher by our Club in collaboration with Indian Prosthodontic Society and supported by Rotary Club Redding West California (USA). 83 residents and 90 children were checked and treated for their dental ailments and given free oral kits, toothpastes and brushes. Rtn. Dr. Sanjay Kalra President IPS Chandigarh gave a talk on Oral Health with special emphasis on ‘No to Tobacco’. Shri Narinder Choudhary President RCC DMC and Shri Bhupinder Singh President RCC Khuda Ali Sher helped in organizing the event.15 Prosthodontists from IPS, team from Smile Express Mobile Dental Van and 8 Rotarians of Chandigarh Midtown participated.
